This fresh, carefully edited concert band transcription has been extensively researched and will be a cherished addition to serious band literature for generations to come. Schweizer-Klänge (Swiss Sounds) for Bass Trombone and Wind Ensemble is a work by Friederich Belcke that may be performed on a small-bore Bass Trombone or large-bore Tenor Trombone. The work was composed and first performed in 1835 by German composer and soloist, Friederich Belcke as a solo to be accompanied by a military band and dedicated to His Royal Highness, the Prince Christian Friederich of Denmark.This work has been rediscovered and beautifully edited for solo (Bass) Trombone and Wind Ensemble by Danish solo Trombonist and pedagog, Niels Ole-Bo Johansen.The music reminisces about the sounds of Switzerland....the awesome snow-covered mountains of the Alps, lush green forests, deep blue skies, calm lakes, and rushing river waters. It is a joyful work with not a care in the world.This work ranges from pedal B-flat to high B-flat and can be performed by a moderately advanced performer on either a Tenor or Bass Trombone.

The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the tango Gaúcho became popular, is one of Chiquinha Gonzaga's most recorded and best-known songs, along with Ó abre alas, Lua branca, and Atraente. It was born on the stages of musical theaters, where it was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national costumes Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at the Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa), the anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses to the music of Corta-jaca, helping to popularize it, especially after his version was recorded on disc by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca frequented other stages and repertoires: café-cantante, chope-berrante, rodas de choro... But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it achieved its glory. Performed on the guitar by first lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up nicknaming the administration of Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa made from the rostrum. When asked what was the corta-jaca he had heard so much about, he concluded: The lowest, the most vulgar, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions the corta-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and one does not want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces to blush and the youth to laugh! Never before in the history of Brazil had eminently popular music been performed at the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca has become a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, meriting recordings by, among others, Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, countless bands, and some sung versions. It was written by the maestro also for singing and piano and small orchestra: oboe, viola, timpani, horns (bass), bassoon.

JalousieJalousie is a tango composed by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925.  There are two main themes in the composition.  The first is “a temperamental theme†in D minor followed by a lyrical section in D major.  Gade’s composition has two sources of inspiration.  The first was by a violent thunderstorm that surprised him one day while he was out on a walk.  The other source of inspiration came from a jealousy murder, which was much talked about in those days, and was reported in the newspapers.  The first performance was set for September 14, 1925, and Gade himself played the opening violin cadenza of the tango. This grade 3 band piece features mallet percussion in an exciting burst representing the electrical energy of a phone call traveling over the wires. Special instrumental effects and spoken dialogue contribute to a unique concert experience, excellent for a concert opener or finale. We hear touch tones, ringing phones, a 911 call, and emergency sirens as the phone call dances along the wires before plunging under the highway to finally emerge at a location of the ensemble's choosing. At about 2:15 in length, the piece offers some rhythmic and technical challenges for mallets and upper woodwinds, with an active part for low brass and woodwinds that provides a nice change of pace for those players. Bassoon, horn, and oboe parts are doubled in other instruments and may be omitted. Worksheet for reinforcing rhythms included.

This arrangement of Never Enough is for concert band with an optional vocal soloist.The work starts out with the simple piano arpeggios that really hooked my ear on the original, before leading into an intimate blend of woodwind timbres and flowing percussive melodies for the first verse. Low Brass lead the work into the first chorus, where a Horn solo carries the emotion to the first full ensemble hit that pushes through until the end of the work where sudden silence and soft, warm extended chord punctuates the piece.This piece was written with advanced high school and higher level musicians in mind. Though the pieces isn't incredibly difficult overall, the range asked of some of the performers and the raw emotion that this work represents demands a level of training. You could also have a drummer play an authentic 'one-drop' rhythm with the kick and side-stick both on 2 and 4. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is silent German expressionist film from 1920. Considered by many to be the first 'true' horror film, Caligari was incredibly innovative with its use of cinematography, warped sets, and the first substantial use of what is now known as the ‘plot-twist’ ending. The title character of the film, Dr. Caligari, has a cabinet - (believe it or not!) - and in this cabinet lives the somnambulist (the sleepwalker), Cesare, who goes around carrying out Caligari's evil deeds. Directed by Robert Wiene and staring Werner Krauss and Conrad Veidt, The Cabinet of Dr. Calagari continues to influence, inspire, and captivate filmmakers even today.
