Julia Perry (25 March 1924 – 24 April 1979) was an American classical composer and teacher who combined European classical and neo-classical training with her African-American heritage. In 1952, Perry began studying under Nadia Boulanger in Paris, during which time she was awarded the Boulanger Grand Prix for her Viola Sonata; after five and a half years in Europe, Perry returned to America and continued her work in composition. 'Pastoral' was composed in 1959 for flute and six strings (2 violins, 2 violas and 2 cellos) here expanded to the palette of the concert band including supporting percussion. This arrangement has been made as part of an ongoing project to widen the repertoire of music by women composers for concert band around the world.

It is the eighth movie of the Star Trek franchise, and the second starring the cast of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Jerry Goldsmith scored First Contact, his third Star Trek feature. Instead of composing a menacing theme to underscore the Borg, Goldsmith wrote a pastoral theme linked to humanity's hopeful first contact. The theme uses a four-note motif used in Goldsmith's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier score, which is used in First Contact as a friendship theme and general thematic link. Star Trek: First Contact was released on November 22, 1996, and was the highest-grossing film on its opening weekend. Critical reception was mostly positive. The undulating hills stretching endlessly beneath the warm embrace of the setting sun served as the impetus for this composition. Written for the Chapman High School Band, the march captures the essence of the picturesque landscape surrounding the school.The piece is loosely characterized as a pastoral march, reflecting the intention to infuse harmonies and melodies that resonate with the spirit of Americana. Drawing inspiration from how Aaron Copland's music mirrors the landscapes it depicts, the composition aims to create a sonic representation of the visual beauty of Inman.Not adhering strictly to traditional march conventions, the piece incorporates a lush trio section, enhancing the overall sense of grandeur and tranquility. While Compton Bridge Road may deviate from the conventional march style, it remains a valuable educational tool, providing opportunities for students to explore different musical elements and forms within the context of a march. This composition offers a refreshing perspective, allowing musicians to expand their understanding of the genre while maintaining essential march style and structure.
