The journey across the Wild West was full of hardship, peril, and loss This song battles the very real struggles with levity and humor. It was first published in 1858.“Git Along, Little Dogies†is a cowboy ballad, also known as “Whoopie Ti Yi Yoâ€. While likely older, the first mention of the song was in author Owen Wister’s 1893 journal. It was first published in 1910. “Dogies†is a reference to small or orphaned calves. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line†refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912. At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men. By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. The title is a reference to the Mona Lisa, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, and to the song of the same name, originally performed by Nat King Cole, which was covered by Seal for the movie. Julia Roberts received a record $25 million for her performance, the highest ever earned by an actress at that time. Rachel Portman's score for the film is in a similar vein to her others for 'The Cider House Rules' and 'Chocolat', but the lovely flute theme in this suite works nicely for concert band and the combination of piano and vibraphone (originally harp) lend a pulsating texture throughout. Perfect for a quiet moment in a concert of film music and, of course, important music by a woman composer in a crowded market of male writers. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

This piece is elegant and suited for Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and of course, Marching Band.The piece is one minute long and is meant to be suited next to other Egyptian features, such as the other movement of The Sands of Time. In the second movement of The Sands of Time, we further into Egyptian mythology with a cross arrangement of Go Down Moses, an African American Spiritual about the Harriet Tubman, whose codename was Moses among the slaves at the time and Aquarium, by Camille Saint-Saens from Carnival of The Animals.At the surface level, the concepts of these pieces have nothing in common, but musically, their melodies are quite similar. In 2006, Enya started work on a Christmas album of traditional carols and original tracks, but the idea was changed to a collection of songs with a Christmas or winter theme as it better suited the style of the new material. It was recorded with her long-time collaborators, arranger and producer Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan. Journey of the Angels is from this album, 'And Winter Came...' and was written in the style of what Enya described as a slow traditional carol; she chose it as a personal highlight. The song is dedicated to the American director and editor Tim Royes, who produced the music videos for Enya's songs Amarantine and It's in the Rain and died in 2007. This arrangement for concert band is part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide repertoire and features prominent parts for Cor Anglais (cued if not available) and tubular bells (chimes) to really bring out the wintery atmosphere.
