Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912. At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men. By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

Josef Strauss, second born od the three Strauss brothers wrote this polka mazur in 1862 in Pavlovsk, Russia, located 30 kilometers south from St. Petersburg, the capital of the Russian Empire. Sweet Gingerbread Man is a song with music by Michel Legrand and lyrics by Alan Bergman and Marilyn Bergman. It was recorded originally for director Leonard Horn's 1970 screen version of Robert T. Westbrook's 'The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart', a film about young people in Greenwich Village, New York. The song for the film was performed by the Mike Curb Congregation, who went on to record other film songs, including I Was Born in Love with You, another Legrand/Alan Bergman/Marilyn Bergman composition, this time for the 1970 film version of 'Wuthering Heights'. Sammy Davis Jr., Jack Jones, the Muppets, Bobby Sherman and Sarah Vaughan have all recorded versions of this charming, gently swinging classic; from it's distinctive opening riff to it's closing jazzy phrases, your audience is sure to love this sweet, summery classic.

She studied music at Royal Holloway, University of London, and after graduating, returned to Cornwall where she now leads a busy musical life as a composer, cellist, and piano and cello teacher. Becky developed a love of singing at an early age and her interest in sacred choral music grew during her time as a member of the Royal Holloway Chapel Choir. She now composes mainly choral music and draws much of her inspiration from her Christian faith. In the composer's own words, 'it was an obvious choice of text for a carol composition. I attempted to write an uncomplicated melody highlighting the lowliness of the stable scene and thus the verses open with a gently lilting tune, with simple harmony, which intensifies chromatically as the piece progresses.' Arranged as a project to bring more work by women composers into the concert band repertoire, this would make a lovely new addition to your Christmas concert.

Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1382660). Mélanie Hélène Bonis, known as Mel Bonis (21 January 1858 – 18 March 1937), was a prolific French late-Romantic composer. She wrote more than 300 pieces, including works for piano solo and four hands, organ pieces, chamber music, mélodies, choral music, a mass, and works for orchestra. Though she did not have the advantage of being born into a family in the upper classes, her talent at piano led her to formal education at the Paris Conservatory where she studied with Ernest Guiraud and César Franck.  Claude Debussy was among her classmates and her music, which was largely published during her lifetime, was praised by Camille Saint-Saëns. Adoro te devote, a text by Thomas Aquinas, is one of the medieval poetic compositions, being used as spoken prayers and also as chanted hymns, which were preserved in the Roman Missal published in 1570 following the Council of Trent (1545–1563); the opus number for this lovely piece by Bonis, expanded from the original SATB to full concert band, is 149, suggesting that it was composed around the turn of the 20th century.

She wrote and sang the theme song for the TV series 'The Nanny'. A native of Chicago, her father, John Callaway, was a journalist and her mother was a singer, pianist, and vocal coach. She learned scat singing from her father and a love of jazz from his record collection, and she learned classical music from her mother. 'Christmas Lullaby' was recorded by Barbra Streisand in 2001 and is featured on her album 'Christmas Memories', it was later recorded by Callaway herself and has also been covered by Ronan Tynan. This version for concert band features a solo vocal, but options for Alto Sax or Flugelhorn are provided, making it a really flexible option, providing a calmer moment within a holiday concert. This arrangement has been made as part of a project to bring more works by women composers into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol†but with the lyric:“God bless you, Merry Gentleman!May nothing you dismay!â€The phrase “God rest you merry†historically meant “may God grant you peace and happinessâ€. “Rest you merry†was used both in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Julietâ€. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ‘merry’ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.“Pat-A-Pan†is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric “tu-re-lu-re-lu†for the sound of a flute.“Yigdal†is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was the only woman to hold a professorship at a European Conservatory (Paris) in the 19th Century.  They would only allow her to teach piano, not composition, because she was undeniably a virtuoso pianist.  During her lifetime she mainly composed for piano, but also wrote works for the orchestra, including three symphonies, and a great deal of mixed chamber music. She wrote no works for wind band of any kind, yet she lived in a golden age of especially French band music. As such, I felt a new generation of music students should hear the music of this incredibly talented composer who had the misfortunate of being born female in the 19th Century. This work is certainly characteristic of the Romantic Era and would make a lovely concert overture. the main sub ject of her variations is Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. If you purchase this score (and like it), please write to me at debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc and I will send you a copy of the wav file as well as a link to her original piano work (I;'ve not taken too many liberties). If you still like it, parts may be had for $100 via Venmo or personal check. Write to debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc..
