Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my lightBe Thou My Vision is a traditional Christian hymn, which can be traced to Ireland but is now sung in English-speaking churches around the world and is often sung around St. Patrick’s Day. The music is the Irish folk song, Slane referring to Slane Hill. Slane Hill is about ten miles from Tara in County Meath. It was on Slane Hill around 433 AD that St. Patrick defied a royal edict by lighting candles on Easter Eve. High King Logaire of Tara had decreed that no one could light a fire before Logaire began the pagan spring festival by lighting a fire on Tara Hill. Logaire was so impressed by Patrick’s devotion that, despite his defiance (or perhaps because of it), he let him continue his missionary work. The rest is history.This arrangement is for a concert band with optional String parts if would like an orchestral arrangement! It was popular during the First World War and tells a story of three fictional soldiers on the Western Front suffering from homesickness and their longing to return to Blighty - a slang term for Britain.Fred Godfrey wrote the song with Bennett Scott and A.J. Mills after passing a music hall in Oxford where a show called Blighty was showing. He recounts: One of us suddenly said What an idea for a song! Four hours later it was all finished, and the whole country was singing it soon afterwards. I got - not very much.The chorus lyric Take me back to dear old Blighty/Put me on a train to London town was included in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. Layers of counterpoint bathe the piece in an ethereal wash of beautiful textures and colours which soar above the melody line. It's an arrangement that your band will adore playing!Concert Band - GRADE 3. DURATION: 2’.05’Program notes:The low woodwinds have the spotlight in this lovely piece reminiscent of a jazz waltz. Layers of counterpoint bathe the piece in an ethereal wash of beautiful textures and colours which soar above the melody line.Rehearsal notes:This study in counterpoint needs clear layers with beautifully balanced and blended dynamics and tone. The piece should build up gradually with crescendos and decrescendos carefully observed so that the band swells and fades as a whole, particularly at rehearsal figure B. The chromatic phrases at rehearsal figures B and D need to be smooth and in time, not at all hurried. The melody is a feature for the lower instruments, including tuba, and is an opportunity for these instruments to explore increased ranges and to work on a full well- rounded, lyrical tone.About the composer:Neille Williams is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer based in Canberra, Australia. After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Neille worked as an in-demand musician, composer and conductor on the Sydney music scene before taking her talents abroad. There are many moments in our lives but none more significant than birth and death. Whilst birth is openly celebrated in our society, death however is treated as dark and sombre.I was moved to compose this piece Laid to Rest as I saw death as a final resting place and the funeral, a celebration of that person’s life as he is sent off on a journey of peace. Hence, this piece takes on a lighter, hopeful yet reflective feel compared to other pieces of heavier, melancholic notes.I was deeply honoured when it was first played / performed at Singapore’s late founding father Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew’s funeral. I had to control my tears as I was conducting the band and was so grateful for being able to honour him with my composition.During this pandemic, there are many healthcare heroes on the frontline working tirelessly to protect all of us. Some have even sacrificed their lives. I would like to dedicate this to these heroes. May they and their loved ones find comfort in this piece.
