Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,†and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.†♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter†in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter†pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns†“Listen to the Mockingbird†and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?†♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. The volunteers are a-pouring in From every loyal quarter, And I'm goin' down to Washington To fight for Abraham's daughter. ♫ At the beginning of the war, the majority of soldiers, North and South, were fighting to uphold their view of government, each side justifying its position by quoting the Constitution. Southern States saw each State as a sovereign, independent nation. Abraham Lincoln insisted that the United States were one nation. For Abraham Lincoln, the purpose of the war was to preserve the Union. In the context of the show, gambler Nicely-Nicely Johnson invents a dream about being saved from hell in order to bring together the members of the prayer meeting. It was originally performed on stage by Stubby Kaye who later reprised his role as Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the 1953 London production, as well as the 1955 film version. In popular culture, the song was performed in the pilot episode of the show 'Glee' in 2009, and then redone in the season 3 finale, Goodbye as well as making appearances on various TV shows and films. The piece starts with a brief fanfare, followed immediately by a rousing melody in the style of an old sea-shanty. Images of sailing upon an endless sea of stars come to mind as a tranquil nocturne is presented, but the peace is shattered as cutlasses and sabers clash in a dogfight sure to end in Davy Jones’ locker! The music swells to a dramatic conclusion as our mighty galleon surges across a stormy sea. Instrumentation The Privateers comes with full sets of both concert/stage and marching/field parts, allowing for great flexibility in your performance venues. Contemporary marching bands and drum & bugle corps utilize specialized field percussion which is typically not used in a concert setting. With this piece, the use of outdoor percussion (quad toms and a tonal bass drum line) onstage is encouraged, although not required. A single bass drum line is included which may be used instead of (or in addition to) the tonal bass drum line, and the Quad Toms part may be omitted. A piano part is included, primarily for optional use indoors as a color instrument for the ensemble. However, smaller bands in particular may find it useful for filling out the accompaniment line if instrumentation is limited. Optionally, a very small ensemble of melodic instruments could be used, with the piano acting as a full-fledged accompaniment. Several optional parts are included, such as Eb and Bb Horn, for ensembles with limited instrumentation. Also, the two Low Winds parts should be distributed equally across trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tenor sax players. Double reed parts are not included. Double these instruments on appropriate parts to suit the needs of your ensemble. Teaching Points Meter – The alternation of 6/8 and 4/4 with a constant pulse (rather than a constant 8th note) provides an excellent opportunity to teach your students to shift the subdivision of the beat from triple to duple and back again. Chromaticism & Accidentals – There is a recurring passage which features the prominent use of secondary dominants, or circle of fifths chord motion. Students can learn a few less-than-common accidentals and enharmonics, while also getting a larger lesson in music theory.

While the truth of the many stories about his life is debatable, he became known as the pirate Gasparilla, from which the famous (or perhaps, infamous) Gasparilla Festival held annually in Tampa, Florida took its name. Much folklore exists about Gasparilla, including that he established a pirate kingdom in a mysterious location in Florida, became terrifically wealthy from plundering ships and holding hostages for ransom, and that he jumped from his ship and drowned rather than be captured by the U.S. Navy in 1821. The piece features many pirate and nautical themes easily playable by 2nd and 3rd year bands, along with a wealth of sound effects from percussion and optional synthesizer.

Her compositions include songs, works for piano, chamber music, orchestral works, choral works and operas.Smyth tended to be marginalised as a ‘woman composer’ as though her work could not be accepted as mainstream. Yet when she produced more delicate compositions, they were criticised for not measuring up to the standard of her male competitors. Nevertheless, she was granted a damehood, the first female composer to be so honoured.The Wreckers is an opera in three acts, composed by Dame Ethel Smyth to a libretto in French by Henry Brewster. After spending considerable energy in trying to get the work performed in French, the first performance took place in a German translation by John Bernhoff, under the title of Strandrecht, at the Neues Theater, Leipzig on 11 November 1906. Smyth persisted in her attempts to see it staged elsewhere, but it was not until the conductor Thomas Beecham championed the work that a complete, staged performance was achieved in England in 1909 with funding support from her friend Mary Dodge.  The Overture has been arranged for wind band, and the PDF contains the full score and a full set of parts.

He was a Spanish clown, mime, acrobat, comic actor and circus artist, with American nationality since 1922, who is considered the best clown in the world of his time.Marceline was Spanish artist born in 1873 who performed in several European countries. Around 1895 he had success at the London Hippodrome and then enticed by producers Thompson and Dundy to come to the New York Hippodrome, where he arrived with great fanfare in 1905. He was a part of shows at the Hippodrome through 1915, by which time his pantomime routine and falling gags were falling out of favor with the public. He did reappear at the Hippodrome for some later shows in 1920-21 and 1922-23.Attempts to succeed in the restaurant business in New York and Connecticut both failed, and he lost money in real estate ventures. Out of work and out of savings, Marceline was found dead by suicide in his hotel room on November 5, 1927, with photographs of his glory days on the bed.Marceline was long admired by Charlie Chaplin, who worked with Marceline at the London Hippodrome from December 1900 to April 1901, and is one of just a few performers from this period of his life that Chaplin discusses in his autobiography. His full name was Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo de Suppè. He is regarded as father of the Viennese operetta. As he very often composed on bad quality librettos, most of his operettas nowadays are no more performed on stage. But many of his overtures and melodies are still popular, like this overture to the operetta Banditenstreiche (The Jolly Robbers or Bandits' Pranks), which was first performed in Vienna in April 1867. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg. March of the Shadows would be perfect for a Halloween orAutumn Concert.March of the Shadows begins with a whistle! It calls the show by announcing each new section of the piece. (Astudy of form.) It even reacts to a momentary modulation. The whistle part has all sorts of fun staging potential,including having it played by the director! The initial whistle is followed by a percussion introduction which sets thebeat. Seven percussion parts, three of them optional, have been included so that everyone in a large percussionsection will be kept engaged and out of trouble! The body of the work includes two alternating themes, one dark andshadowy in minor, the other bright, heroic and slightly syncopated in major. Every part gets the melody at somepoint, even the low brass and woodwinds! Ranges are all standard for early second-year band players, i.e. clarinetsdo not go over the break, trumpets do not go higher than middle line B, the snare drum part is sprinkled with basicrudiments such as flams and paradiddles. Even the horn gets a crack at the tune! Every part is fun, interesting andeducational.

Listen to this piece hereSuite for Band took shape from two inspirations: the first, the haunting motifs of Frederic Chopin’s Etude Op. 10, No. 12, often referred to as “Revolutionary†or the “Bombardment of Warsawâ€; the second, the still-invigorating works for band of Holst, Grainger, and Vaughn-Williams. Each movement explores different aspects of Chopin’s Etude – the first in a lively dance, the second in a gentle melody, and the finale in a rush of energy that brings the work to an exciting close. Each instrument is featured at least once which makes the Suite ideal for the developing ensemble. I owe many thanks to Dr. Thomas McCauley and his bands at Montclair State University and Windhaven in 2017 for reading the work through various stages of development and for their helpful feedback.
