The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This arrangement started off as an assignment while taking Composing and Arranging for School Bands with Dr. Scott Watson (Alfred, Hal Leonard, Wingert-Jones) at Central Connecticut State University in the summer of 2014. Minka, Minka is arranged in band-friendly C-harmonic minor. A few items to remember: - Upper winds have a minor second trill on concert Ab to A♮ - The section starting at 53 should be played as delicate as one would allow. - The section starting at 69 should appear to gain momentum. - The section starting at 88 should be equal or stronger than it has first appeared.

The colorful arrangements represent harmonic variations around the ever-present melody of the original songs.Alle Jahre wieder (Every year again, Audio-Demo from the beginning) is a well-known Christmas carol from the German-speaking area. The melody comes from Friedrich Silcher, the text was written by Wilhelm Hey in 1837.Es wird scho 'glei' dumpa (It will be dark soon, Audio-Demo from 2:15) is an Austrian nativity scene song based on the melody of a traditional Marian song. The text was written by Anton Reidinger in relation to a historical nativity play in Bad Ischl and published around 1884.Stille Nacht (Silent Night, Audio-Demo from 4:55) is one of the most famous Christmas carols. It was performed for the first time on December 24, 1818 with the melody by Franz Xaver Gruber and the text by Joseph Mohr in Salzburg. Since then, the song has been translated into countless languages and sung all over the world.The PDF contains the Score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. No duplication of parts necessary - so, just print and go.
