Meredith Publications (A0.1501543). This orchestration is the end product of my book entitled Orchestrational Archetypes in Percy Grainger's Wind Band Music. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style. I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer). Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.

Starting quietly, the sound slowly grows to a strong B section, then marches away into the distance. This G-minor work is ideal for any concert or festival. DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Medium Easy / Grade 2 / suitable for middle school or small high school bands FEATURES: - All winds (including tuba!) have melody at least once. - Simple trombone parts (generously cross-cued in Horn, Euphonium) - 2nd Clarinet remains below break. CHALLENGES: - Use of dotted-eighth/sixteenth rhythm in melody. - Use of low register for clarinets. (low E, F, G#) - Tuba solo (cued in other parts) - Muted Trumpet 1 solo (unison line with other instruments) - Dynamics; articulations; a few 16th-notes in all parts. RANGES: - All parts are well within 2nd-year ranges: Flute to E-flat above staff (only once); 1st Clarinet to C above staff; 2nd Clarinet remains below break; Trumpets to 3rd space C (1st Trumpet to E, once); Trombone to C above staff; Tuba to C on staff, down to D just below staff. Written around 1820 by Italian composer Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, this engraving of his CONCERTO FOR HORN is in the original key and has been meticulously edited. Consisting of two sections, the beautiful, plaintive opening slow section (Larghetto alla Siciliano) is about 2.5 minutes in length and works well as a stand-alone feature to showcase the sonority of the horn. It would be perfect for a talented high school player. The concluding fast section (Allegretto brillante) is bubbly, delightful, and quite technically challenging in a few spots. The concert band / wind ensemble accompaniment (available separately) is scored to prevent overpowering the soloist and will work with smaller groups for senior recitals, etc. NOTE: This download is for the 4-page SOLO PART ONLY. If you wish to purchase the band parts and full score, please visit www.bandroom.com. This SOLO PART will also work with the Kuyper setting for piano accompaniment. The score and parts are error-free, as I spent considerable time in editing and making corrections to the parts while it was prepared for performance. Each section is also written in such a way that the chords are not only cross-sectional, but also fulfilled within the section, adding to the lush textures. As each instrument’s ranges are stretched high and low, so are the intricacies of each passage that exemplify each instrument’s unique technicalities. This musical setting of the Kyrie was written for choir by Italian composer Antonio Lotti, who spent his entire career at the famous St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.The adaptation of choir literature for use by wind players provides an ideal tool for teaching basic musicianship such as intonation, balance, and blend as well as the advanced techniques of phrasing, nuance of line, and accuracy of ensemble articulation. Because the work consists of only 4 voices, players can more readily hear and address individual, section, and ensemble problems.The score and each part is notated with the specific voice assignment (S = soprano, A = alto, T = tenor, B = bass). Noble and stately, Processional March is written for your second year beginning Band. The elements of this piece include dynamic contrasts, varying articulations, and a new time & key signature that is often not seen in first year literature, while maintaining an appropriate range for your students—for reference, the clarinets are under the break, with their highest note being the 3rd line Bb and the lowest being the B-natural below the staff. Processional March is written in 2/4, with the first half of the piece in Eb and the second in Bb. With a tempo marking of Moderato {quarter note = 108}, this march comes in under 3 minutes, making this piece an attainable piece to learn for any upcoming concert. The rhythmic structure of this piece is strict quarter and 8th note rhythms for all wind instruments. The snare drum part also has the same rhythmic structure, but also includes 9-stroke rolls, flams, flam-taps and paired 8th-two 16th rhythms. The percussion section has only four parts–Crash Cymbals, Snare/Bass Drum and Glockenspiel—making this ideal for any sized percussion section.Processional March follows an |:AA:|-B-C form. Throughout the piece, each instrument visits the harmonic structure beneath the melody, as well as playing the melodies featured in the different sections. Part-wise, all of the wind instruments are written in a comfortable range and have unison parts, with the flutes, clarinets and & trumpets having certain measures divided into two parts, still maintaining unison rhythms. The flutes are divided specifically into Flute 1 and Flute 2/Oboe, which is ideal if you do not have an oboe in your beginning band. Students will enjoy this straight forward march and directors will find rehearsing it to be enjoyable and allows for the teaching of newer techniques and skills to advance their band’s level of playing!
