This piece tells the ficticious story of an inept, incompitant, yet quite pompous prefect conquistador and his poor attempt to colonize an indigenous village. The natives keep out smarting him, and sabotaging his plans. Things get so out of hand, that he can't even keep his own people in line. This makes the Prefect irate and ill-tempered, more so to his own company, than to the natives! What am I to tell the queen?!. I can't have my name soiled like this!. Upon hearing that the Prefect's superior officer, the Legate of Iberia, will be coming to check up on his progress, he comes up with a plan. He'll make a deal with the natives to make it look like he's been kidnapped and murdered. Dressed as conquistadors, the natives won't say a word and the Prefect's second in command will say that he's been killed. To the Prefect's surprise, this actually worked and the Legate was fooled. Upon the Legate returning back to Iberia, the now defunct Prefect conquistador has made arrangements with the natives in exchange for food and supplies to fool the Legate each time he visits.This rousing march is a great opener or closer for any concert. Perfect for high school, college, or municiple/adult continuing level community band! The music here perfectly encapsulates this swashbuckling, yet haphazardous story!

Colin Kirkpatrick’s National Anthems Express KOSOVO: Himni i Kosovës This quick and easy national anthem arrangement is essential for traveling musicians, bands, instrumental groups and both amateur and professional ensembles. You can play it with any virtually any combination of instruments: symphonic band, clarinet choir, brass ensemble, brass band, solos, duets and trios - almost anything! This arrangement is in six independent parts each transposed into a variety of keys. For the most satisfying sound you’ll need to get a good balance between each part possibly with an emphasis on the melodic line. If you have a non-standard ensemble, you can pick 'n' mix as required. The piano reduction can fill missing parts or can be used as the basis for an accompaniment. This arrangement consists of a two-page score with seven instrumental staves and three percussion staves. The following parts are printed on separate pages. The score and all the parts are contained in the same pdf file. Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

This work was commissioned by Ron Inyoue for the Arctic Winer Games in Fairbanks, Alaska 2014. When Ron Inouye first discussed a fanfare for the Arctic Winter Games to be held in Fairbanks in 2014, he asked me to somehow represent the peoples of the north and to include something of native drumming, particularly, Inuit drumming. Since the fanfare is for the games, it needs to be able to be used in its entirity or in parts depending on how much time or the purpose of the fanfare in a given situation. This fanfare is therefore composed with three distinct sections that can be used separately or together depending on the circumstance. The Opening four measures of the brass is reminiscent of much of my music representing the Aurora Borealis. The Drumming is inspired by Inuit and Yupik drumming. I use the two different types of drum and blend the drumming style of the Yupik and Inuit cultures in a bit of a western context. The Yupik tradition of hard beat and soft beat is represented in the dynamics of the drums. The Inuit tradition of establishing the steady beat and then passing rhythmic patterns between the parts is represented throughout the work in all of the drum parts. There is a nod to Athabascan old time fiddle music in the choice of an Irish/Scotish traditional melody entitled The Far North. This is also a traditional Canadian Northern Tier American camping and scouting song. Finally, there is a traditional Fanfare that can be used independently to call people to an event or back from an intermission. It is my sincere hope that this fanfare represents all of us in some way and leaves enough to the listener, that they will relate their own experience of the North in the music they hear. According to Merriam/Webster, the word synergos is a Greek word that means, working together. It is my hope that Synergos will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play, and provide other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used to motivate and encourage their students. Synergos is dedicated to all of my former music students in the Madison County Florida School System, who I had the privilege of teaching from 1974-2016.

John McAllister #664636. Published by John McAllister (A0.1061119). This is a light and fun arrangement of the famous French-Canadian Folk Song Alouette. It falls in the easy category and should be able to be accomplished by players as young as first, maybe second year. It goes through a few iterations of the melody and passes it around many times from each instrument to the next. You can choose to swing all or part of it in order to sound more like the original. I didn't choose to notate that to make it more accessible to younger players. Suggested combinations: Brass Quintet Woodwind Quintet (mix-match of flute, oboe, clarinet including bass, alto saxophone, tenor sax, baritone sax) Woodwind Quintet (standard - flute, oboe, horn, clarinet, bassoon) Saxophone Quintet Mix-match between brass and woodwinds Full Band - as a flexible instrumentation ensemble This piece falls into my larger chamber music initiative that seeks to create accessible, ready to play arrangements and compositions to get young musicians PLAYING MUSIC with others. Because it is so adjustable, many different combinations can be used in order to facilitate music making. A great example, a middle school band director can teach the piece as a full ensemble piece, then break the group into smaller groups (i.e. flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet.. or whatever works with the band director's instrumentation!).

A copy cat imitates and mimics another and a cha-cha is a Latin American dance. Put them together and you have a vibrant piece where the instruments in the band do just that in a South American style! After a short intro, the trumpets begin with a catchy melody, then the clarinets jump in to repeat it. Next, the trumpets reprise what the clarinets and flutes just played! Then the flutes get their chance to play the melody, the saxes their opportunity, and everybody gets into the act, all the way down to the deep, low brass. When the piece concludes and the applause dies down, the audience will be humming and whistling this melody all the way to the parking lot!
