In a soulful manner, the piece begins with the familiar song When Peace Like a River. This soulful hymn insists on finding peace, regardless of the world’s sorrows. The music then moves to a majestic trumpet processional. Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. After the climax, the processional settles and gives way to a delicate chorus of It is Well With My Soul. The hymn tune begins delicately in the flutes, yet the brass echo the stately processional. The hymn majestically builds toward its own climax, accompanied by a trumpet fanfare. This triumphant piece reminds us that it can indeed be Well With My Soul!.

With other birds, it lives at Helia's bar where they are treated with great affection. The feeling of preservation combined with freedom was the inspiration for the composition of this piece that uses two genres as a base, the ijexá and the maxixe. The rhythmic characteristics of each of these genres were distributed among the instruments and guided by a cheerful melody. An opportunity to expand the repertoire and immerse in the rhythm and fusion of these two genres, ijexá and maxixe. An authorial piece that brings the genuinely Brazilian joy and can be used in contrast to dense pieces, make your band to fly high and free like Cristal Canindé.

I came up with this song by answering one simple question: “What do I really want to do with my music?” The answer came very quickly: “I want people to feel strong emotions of happiness when they listen to my music!” Soon after, I started composing a very simple outline of the piece.My biggest hope when you listen to this song is that it brings you much joy and happiness! I believe Optimism is a truly important view to have on life. Sometimes, you just have to look on the bright side! Unfortunately, there cannot always be happiness. If there was no sadness, you would not recognize or appreciate the happiness. There has to be opposition in order to feel anything. Without sadness and pain there would be no joy and happiness. That's why I wrote this song the way I did. In the beginning, it starts fairly happy and exciting! But then, sadness enters and even a bit of anger. It adds great contrast to the end which feels even more exciting and elated! I hope this song helps you feel optimistic, excited, and happy!

Ascending Everest is an exciting new work for Concert Band that endeavors to create the varying moods that I imagine would accompany such an incredible undertaking as scaling the world's tallest mountain.The piece opens with a dramatic minor chord as the behemoth is viewed in person for the first time. It then quickly delves into the business at hand with a mixture of excitement and forboding. The middle section represents the first night's base camp, as weariness and doubt cause the climber great trepidation over what is yet to come. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? The tone begins a subtle change as renewed determination sets in, and the climax rings of victory!This work is for Concert Band, however the standard instrumentation is not strictly adhered to. In my experience, most high school or community bands don't have anyone to play bassoon and so I elected not create such a part. Also, you will note that there is no Percussion 2. May, Marks wanted to put the popular 1939 Montgomery Ward story into song. Johnny Marks, a decorated World War II hero, wrote several popular Christmas songs besides Rudolph. The song’s translation into several languages even had an effect on Finnish Christmas tradition – Rudolph is now head of Joulupukki’s sleigh (the Finnish Santa)! The only difference is that the Finnish reindeer don’t fly.This arrangement has a fun swing style to it. Harmonization is slightly more advanced from a Grade I tune, but the rhythms and ranges are very approachable for young musicians. The style lets them experience a standard swing feel.The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. Sleighbells can have as many players as you want. I often had children come from the audience and give them little toy sleigh bells to play. Stephen Cai for Concert BandProgram Notes:MUSIC As a sequel to Pigstep by Lena Raine and Exodus by Ernest Gold, I have decided to take on the challenge of arranging the ever-famous glitch hop song, Monody by Christian Buettner (known more prominently by his online alias, TheFatRat).Similarly to Pigstep, my first arrangement, I ran into the challenge of instrumentation, as Monody’s original soundtrack almost entirely consisted of electronic instruments. However, I used the same technique I did with Pigstep to overcome this problem: assign basslines to low brass, treble melodies to mid-range instruments, and high parts to upper woodwinds. Unlike Pigstep, Monody pushed me to be more creative with the percussion section, as I had to puzzle out recreating all of the numerous sound effects throughout the piece with traditional percussion instruments. I even decided to notate a conch shell line for the war horn present at the beginning and the coda! At the end, however, it all came together nicely, and I came to realize that both this song and the process of arranging it represent a journey, albeit in different contexts. The word “Monody†refers to, in a literal sense, a song sung to mourn one’s death, which accordingly fits with my view of the piece as a journey where the narrator loses their companion. Writing the introduction measures (M.22) carried me through the genuine feelings of embarking on a mythical undertaking as the original soundtrack intends to portray. The lively middle section (M.70) was enjoyable to write as well, because the music itself is upbeat and full of energy. Finally, arranging the solo section was probably my most memorable experience. The slow and subtly melancholic character of the melody (the oboe solo) very closely alludes to the narrator’s mourning, and the enchanting lyrics originally written for this section further confirms their loss:    I still hear you in the breeze,    See your shadows in the trees;    Holding on, memories never change. The chords and harmonies that the original soundtrack provided were relatively simple to transcribe, and I found joy complementing them with luscious percussion effects. This is my interpretation of Monody, and I believe that it would be best performed as a journey, one which we can relate to as it encompasses the theme of loss; a monody. ARTWORK I also took up the challenge of creating original cover artwork for Monody, and I have to say, my level of appreciation for artists of any kind has skyrocketed ever since that endeavor. It took nearly two months of watching YouTube tutorials, onerous idea crunching, and using my sister’s drawing tablet, but I had nevertheless completed it with advice from some of my more experience peers (including my sister). After a short intro, the trumpets begin with a catchy melody, then the clarinets jump in to repeat it. Next, the trumpets reprise what the clarinets and flutes just played! Then the flutes get their chance to play the melody, the saxes their opportunity, and everybody gets into the act, all the way down to the deep, low brass. When the piece concludes and the applause dies down, the audience will be humming and whistling this melody all the way to the parking lot! America’s history is littered with chaotic events, be it school shootings, the attack on the capital, pandemics, 9/11, wars, assassinations, and horrific events yet to come. Through it all, we can feel secure knowing America has, and will, survive. This composition depicts this spirit. It opens with an unusual 4/4 setting of the beginning of “Americaâ€. This is followed by original material that depicts our normal, happy freedom. Suddenly it changes to an aleatoric section representative of a horrific event. Following is a hint of “Amazing Grace†to remember the suffering. As always happens, life returns to normal. Closing is a 4/4 treatment of the final phrase of America, with a hint of the “Star Spangled Bannerâ€. This is an excellent teaching piece for younger bands, as well as a patriotic reminder of America’s strength sure to be an audience favorite.
