The full ensemble then enters, combining traditional carol with the lively accented rhythm. The piece then softly passes the melody between sections. The melody is further passed around as instruments are added. The piece finally gives way to a bombastic combination of the traditional carol and the introductory riff. The melody is then softly passed between sections once more, and then this section finally builds to a full orchestral finish. These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The publication consists of a four-staff score in concert pitch together with fifteen separate parts in various transpositions plus a simplified optional keyboard part. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. These four-part arrangements use flexible instrumentation so that you can exercise considerable control over the instrumental voicing or use them for non-standard ensembles. You can also create interesting instrumental tone color by omitting groups of instruments. If the ensemble is large enough you could omit brass instruments in the quieter sections, or use a solo trumpet against a woodwind background. There are endless possibilities.The complete set includes: Part 1 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 2 in B flat, E flat and C; Part 3 in B flat, E flat, F and C and Part 4 in B flat, E flat and C. Parts 1 and 2 in C have been printed an octave higher than the pitch shown in the score because invariably the parts lie too low for flute or oboe. For elementary players, a Part 1 in C (low) is included at concert (score) pitch. Parts 3 and 4 in C are in the bass clef. The arrangements could be played by virtually any combination of conventional wind band instruments. Using the optional keyboard part they could also be used as solos, duets or trios. The scores and all the parts are contained in a single 190-page PDF file. Please note that these arrangements are not necessarily compatible with other Kirkpatrick arrangements published by Glyn Joseph Editions. This is a common theme running through Christmas Carol literature. Conceived as a fun, accessible overture for young bands or bands with limited instrumentation, A Celebration of Bells highlights two of the most beloved Christmas carols associated with bells. The piece begins with a joyful brass bell-tone fanfare accompanied by trilling woodwinds. The introduction gives way to mostly-unison woodwind rendition of I Heard the Bells On Christmas Day. The brass then further works out the melody with a more chordal presentation. The woodwinds present a short, light interlude, followed by an explosive snare drum and full-band chord one key higher than the beginning. The piece shifts to a Jingle Bells march. Following the march, the music modulates back down one key and returns to a full band, Maestoso version of I Heard the Bells. The overture comes to a close with a return to the familiar introductory bell tones. This piece is sure to be a festive hit for both your students and their audience!

But I also had a number of players who could move faster and play more challenging rhythms and notes than others. What to do? How about a simple arrangement with flexible part assignments?JINGLE THOSE BELLS! is a super-easy setting of Jingle Bells. The work opens with the traditional unison rendition of the melody, as found in almost every beginner band method book ever written. But then, after a brief pause, the melody is repeated, but now faster and with the addition of a bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by several of your best clarinet, sax, and trumpet players who play the Advanced Part. And if you are short on bass voice instruments, you can utilize the optional bass parts for Alto Sax. Super flexible and a bit humorous, it takes a little score study to realize how adaptable this piece is. Guaranteed to work with your beginners! (PS: the printed music shows Callie May, our cat, as arranger. I gave her credit so my wife could play more than one piece by me at her holiday concerts without looking too biased! Consider pairing this work with another one of my super-easy beginner band works - JOY TO THE KING – also available online here).NOTE: this is assembled with the Advanced Clarinet parts appearing as page 1 so you may view it on the web site as you listen to the sound file. During the journey, his page is about to give up the struggle against the cold weather, but is enabled to continue by following the king's footprints, step for step, through the deep snow. The legend is based on the life of the Saint Wenceslaus I, Duke of Bohemia (907–935), who was not a king in his lifetime but had that status conferred on him after his death. In 1853, English hymnwriter John Mason Neale wrote the lyrics in collaboration with his music editor Thomas Helmore to fit the melody of the 13th-century spring carol Tempus adest floridum, which they had found in the 1582 Finnish song collection Piae Cantiones.
