Do You Hear How Many You Are? for Concert Band was originally written in April and May of 2010 for SATB choir. I made this concert band arrangement in 2012. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. The second section features the clarinets and flutes, and feels more like being in a small royal chamber with courtesans. A Royal Welcome Home is written in Eb has a key change to Bb before returning to original key at the end. Ranges are modest, but focus should be placed on ensuring the counter-melodic lines are heard. Written for Grade 1 bands, A Royal Welcome Home can be used by more mature young bands.

Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter.In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music. It’s probably all you’ll ever need for thanksgiving and harvest festivals and the arrangements can be used for virtually any combination of wind instruments. This is an essential title for any band library or for any ensembles that are called upon to provide music for schools or churches. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. The piano part too means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The score and all the parts are contained in a single PDF file. The Coventry Carol originates from a medieval mystery play entitled The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story, from the Annunciation (where the Angel Gabriel appears to Mary), to the Massacre of the Innocents (where King Herod of Judea orders the death of all male infants near Bethlehem under the age of two). It is this tale that the Coventry Carol depicts, taking the form of a lullaby sung by the mothers of the murdered children. As is appropriate, the music is in a minor key – this arrangement uses G minor and D minor as a homage to well-known harmonisations by Thomas Sharp and Henry Walford Davies. It is unknown when the words were first set to music, but a proposed date is 1591, or earlier! Other interesting musical features include the use of a ‘Picardy third’, and ‘false relations’, contributing to the haunting quality of this enduring piece, both in the heart of the English Midlands, and further afield. This arrangement is suitable for all bands of beginner-intermediate ability or higher. There is plenty of interest for both experienced players, and for newcomers. The instrumentation is designed to facilitate both a full sound, but also for flexibility, which is often desired by school, youth, and amateur wind bands / concert bands / wind orchestras.

Movement 1 depicts the harrowing tale of Sojourner Truth's escape from slavery. She went on to become one of the most influential abolitionists in history- both an icon for racial justice and women's rights.The second movement depicts the innocence of a young Malala, who stood up against the Taliban's exclusion of women's rights to education. At the age of 15, she was shot in the head three times on a school bus as she was on her way home. Miraculously, she survived and went on to win a Nobel Peace Prize (she is the youngest person to ever earn this prestigious award. Still alive today, Malala is currently studying at Oxford and runs the Malala Fund, which advocates for quality education for all girls. Movement 3 captures the energy, cunning and adventurous nature of Amelia Earhart. She was the first woman to fly the Atlantic, and her disappearance is one of the greatest mysteries of our time. Rehearsal D represents her flight over the open seas and Rehearsal E depicts the unresolved tragedy of her disappearance. Finally, the 4th movement honors the only person to win Nobel Prizes in two separate sciences, Marie Curie. Her scientific, methodical approach to exploration and discovery are depicted here via the fragmented eighth note motifs and methodical percussion writing. I hope your students will enjoy the catchy hooks and melodies, and I hope that this piece can serve as a valuable reminder of the infinite capacity of the human spirit. The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the tango Gaúcho became popular, is one of Chiquinha Gonzaga's most recorded and best-known songs, along with Ó abre alas, Lua branca, and Atraente. It was born on the stages of musical theaters, where it was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national costumes Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at the Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa), the anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses to the music of Corta-jaca, helping to popularize it, especially after his version was recorded on disc by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca frequented other stages and repertoires: café-cantante, chope-berrante, rodas de choro... But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it achieved its glory. Performed on the guitar by first lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up nicknaming the administration of Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa made from the rostrum. When asked what was the corta-jaca he had heard so much about, he concluded: The lowest, the most vulgar, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions the corta-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and one does not want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces to blush and the youth to laugh! Never before in the history of Brazil had eminently popular music been performed at the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca has become a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, meriting recordings by, among others, Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, countless bands, and some sung versions. We present a work composed as a tongue-in-cheek expression of a popular street tune heard today, put through a series of 5 variations that explore different styles. It works in both a satirical as well as sophisticated manner vertically and horizontally, and uses multiple cliches that will get the audience perking up in recognition. The theme, 贺新年, is a common tune sung in Chinese New Year celebrations. In the heart of celebrating the New Year, this piece is written playable by musicians of all ages, whether in schools or as community orchestras and bands, to come together by the common celebratory notion in a work for an extended orchestra, including the saxophone and euphonium. Written by Daniel Cheng and Jeremy Goh, we hope that this season this piece can bring both laughter and reverence to the street tune, blown out of proportion in style and size. Starting the work is an atonal entry, built on tone rows and planing, legacies of Shoenberg and his contemporaries, before decomposing into an exceedingly lively statement of the theme. This is then juxtaposed beside a trip to tribal communities with interlocking rhythms and a modal distortion of the melody. From the modal mess and deviation from diatonicism, we then return to the prim and proper style of Mozart and Haydn in a short Classical variation. As if to mock its neat stature, this then is shattered with a juxtaposition beside a variation in the style of Shostakovich, modelled after the controversial Leningrad symphony, which draws on a different dimension of the theme, its banality, and propagating and emulsifying it to terrifying levels as it is distorted. Finally, a schreckenfanfare is directed marking an entry into a tribute to one of the greatest legends in music composition, with Beethoven along with its transcendental qualities of cyclism, and use of learned styles, methods of maintaining tension etc., bringing a grand ending to the 10 minute long work.

Released as a single in 1988, the track peaked at number three on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-40 hit in Australia and Ireland. Songwriter Roddy Frame said in 2014 that the song has been great for him, but at the time of creating the album, the song was not in keeping with the other songs. Around this time, Frame had become somewhat of a recluse, living in a remote wooden shack in Hollywood, Marple Bridge, in the hills above Manchester, going through periods of good and bad mental health, while continuing to write music, including the lyric from Westwood to Hollywood in the song. The distinctive saxophone sound is retained and towards the end is an opportunity for your star alto and tenor to solo or battle, to close out the song in the way that it is often performed live by Aztec Camera. Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

It is a song with piano set to a poem by Goethe, depicting a father's desperate ride through the night with his dying son. The son is being taunted by the utterly malevolent Erl King, but the father cannot hear this and tries in vain to keep his son calm. The son's distress increases as the Erl King comes closer and closer, finally claiming the son's life before the father can get him to safety. In this unabridged arrangement the characters of the narrator, father, son and Erl King are delineated by a different combination of instruments for each. The relentless galloping of the horse is maintained throughout. This is an exciting work that any band at intermediate level will enjoy, as will the audience!

The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Enjoy!! Published by James Edward Ernest Symington (A0.1518069). The name of the variation refers to Augustus J. Jaeger, who was employed as music editor by the London publisher Novello & Co. He was a close friend of Elgar's, giving him useful advice but also severe criticism, something Elgar greatly appreciated. Elgar later related how Jaeger had encouraged him as an artist and had stimulated him to continue composing despite setbacks. Nimrod is described in the Old Testament as a mighty hunter before the Lord, Jäger being German for hunter. In 1904 Elgar told Dora Penny (Dorabella) that this variation is not really a portrait, but the story of something that happened. Once, when Elgar had been very depressed and was about to give it all up and write no more music, Jaeger had visited him and encouraged him to continue composing. He referred to Ludwig van Beethoven, who had a lot of worries, but wrote more and more beautiful music. And that is what you must do, Jaeger said, and he sang the theme of the second movement of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 8 Pathétique. Elgar disclosed to Dora that the opening bars of Nimrod were made to suggest that theme. Can't you hear it at the beginning? Only a hint, not a quotation. This variation has become popular in its own right and is sometimes used at British funerals, memorial services, and other solemn occasions. It is always played at the Cenotaph, Whitehall in London at the National Service of Remembrance. A version was also played during the Hong Kong handover ceremony in 1997 and at the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. The “Nimrod” variation was the final orchestral composition (before the national anthem) played by the Greek National Orchestra in a televised June 2013 concert, before the 75-year-old Athenian ensemble was dissolved in the wake of severe government cutbacks. An adaptation of the piece appears at the ending of the 2017 film Dunkirk in the score by Hans Zimmer. This arrangement for Flex-Band has been adapted to suit the instrumentalists. The key has changed and this makes it much more playable and more secure.

From this position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they paved the way towards modern day democracy. Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality of the themes as Solon’s reforms take hold and social and economic stability is once again established. This piece was written to commemorate the opening of the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High School Band in Solon, IA.
