In 1906, a shorter version for piano solo was published, which uses fewer thems and omits the narration. This version uses the original 1902 version as a basis. This is the full score. The score plus the complete parts is available as another item. The individual parts are available as well. The work may be performed as a concert band number, or the orchestration may be used to perform the original ballet. The “stoptime†effects at the end of the piece are especially effective in the version with dancers. I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl†when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts†or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.

A copy cat imitates and mimics another and a cha-cha is a Latin American dance. Put them together and you have a vibrant piece where the instruments in the band do just that in a South American style! After a short intro, the trumpets begin with a catchy melody, then the clarinets jump in to repeat it. Next, the trumpets reprise what the clarinets and flutes just played! Then the flutes get their chance to play the melody, the saxes their opportunity, and everybody gets into the act, all the way down to the deep, low brass. When the piece concludes and the applause dies down, the audience will be humming and whistling this melody all the way to the parking lot! However, in this arrangement, cheekily translated as Let It Snow … But Quietly, the well-known melody in 6/8 time is presented in 4/4 time with a soul treatment. Other German Christmas tunes have also been worked into this medium-difficulty piece.
