Published by Kreechur Kumfort Publishing (A0.833833). Storm at King’s Pointe was composed for the Buena Vista Middle School Honor Band at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Originally planned for February 2017, this event ironically was canceled two years in a row due to severe weather. Located on the eastern edge of Storm Lake is a water park-themed resort called King’s Pointe Resort. This composition depicts a summer storm as it moves over the Iowa hills and across the normally-placid lake. Distant thunder is first heard as dark clouds approach, covering blue Iowa sky. Soon, the drama of drenching rain, powerful wind, and flashes of lightening is represented in an aggressive minor melody. Changes in intensity common to a Midwest storm is reflected within the composition including a quiet respite in the middle and storm-like thunderous percussion breaks. Fully accessible by music ensembles from middle school on up, Storm at King’s Pointe is a nice addition to any concert band program, delighting both players as well as the audience.

A programmatic piece depicting the tale of the Itsy Spider. The composition starts out very bright and joyful (the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout). Quickly, it becomes darker, as the clouds and thunder emerge (down came the rain and washed the spider out). After the period of darkness and melancholy, the song's key gets brighter and brighter, symbolizing the clouds slowly dissipating and sunlight emerging (out came the sun and dried up all the rain). The song ends joyously (and the itsy bitsy spider climbed out the spout again), celebrating the spider's survival of the perilous weather. Fantasy on Itsy Bitsy Spider has the following instrumentation: Flue/Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbal. The song features an oboe solo, in the middle. I hope you enjoy this thrilling piece that is sure to be a pleasure to perform and hear!

My favorite time is watching the sunrise in the spring, just after a soft spring rain. The dark gloomy sky starts to appear light as the sun shines through the clouds as the dark sky slowly gives way to the warm spring sun.

It takes some time for massive clouds to form from this deep cold nebula. But gradually they grow and then attract each other. They are therefore getting bigger and unite with huge momentum resulting in a large whole thing. Now the cold diminishes until it even disappears. It's getting warm, then hot and hotter, finally a spark ignites and a new fresh light is kindled. From now on it brightens up the dark and gives the warmth, which is indispensable for new life to arise.With a duration of approx. 4 1/2 minutes and grade 2, the piece is suitable for a relaxing rest point in the concert programme for the audience and the musicians as well.The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. Its relatively flat topography and high elevation lead to intense winds and unpredictable storms bestowing the plateau's colorful moniker. Contrary to the title, the music reflects a compilation of impressions from multiple visits over a decade’s time, gathered with my son’s first-hand reports of overnight stays, rather than a single day’s experience. My original objective for the music was to portray the stark and stony landscape alternatively caressed and buffeted in a stew of breezes and gales, sunshine and storms. However, as I was writing the piece it became apparent the true theme of the music is rather a daily high-altitude drama pitting light versus darkness, a drama staged on the plateau’s rocks, meadows, streams, and lakes depicting a perpetually shifting kaleidoscope of distinctive lighting unlike any I have experienced elsewhere. The transparent, thin air reveals indigo blue skies and scalding-white clouds overarching stunning vistas stretching a hundred miles or more. The landscape glitters under the radiance of high latitude sunlight. The only word I can think of to describe the golden glow of sunbeams slicing through a summer snow squall is ethereal. The utter absence of artificial light makes for the darkest night skies and brightest stars one can experience on earth.
