Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

He was the first Russian composer whose music would make a lasting impression internationally. He wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the current classical repertoire, including the ballets Swan Lake and The Nutcracker, the 1812 Overture, his First Piano Concerto, Violin Concerto, the Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy, several symphonies, and the opera Eugene Onegin. The Nutcracker is an 1892 two-act ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71). The libretto is adapted from E. T. A. Hoffmann's 1816 short story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King is a story written in 1816 by Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann, in which young Marie Stahlbaum's favorite Christmas toy, the Nutcracker, comes alive and, after defeating the evil Mouse King in battle, whisks her away to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. This waltz is from the end of Act One. In the final scene of Act One, the mice retreat and the nutcracker is transformed into a handsome Prince. He leads Clara through the moonlit night to a pine forest in which the snowflakes dance around them, beckoning them on to his kingdom as the first act ends. John Ivor Holland #929284. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1343777). The Polovtsian Dances form an exotic scene at the end of act 2 of Alexander Borodin's opera 'Prince Igor'. The work remained unfinished when the composer died in 1887, although he had worked on it for more than a decade. A performing version was prepared by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov in 1890. Several other versions, or completions, of the opera have been made. The dances are sometimes performed with chorus and last around 11 minutes. Themes from the Polovtsian Dances have been used widely in popular culture, notably the 1953 musical 'Kismet'; the most prominent example is the popular standard Stranger in Paradise, adapted from the Gliding Dance of the Maidens, which opens this piece. This great piece, a staple of the orchestral repertoire, would form a substantial showpiece in any concert and important solos have been cross-cued for smaller ensembles.

This piece is elegant and suited for Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and of course, Marching Band.The piece is one minute long and is meant to be suited next to other Egyptian features, such as the other movement of The Sands of Time. In the second movement of The Sands of Time, we further into Egyptian mythology with a cross arrangement of Go Down Moses, an African American Spiritual about the Harriet Tubman, whose codename was Moses among the slaves at the time and Aquarium, by Camille Saint-Saens from Carnival of The Animals.At the surface level, the concepts of these pieces have nothing in common, but musically, their melodies are quite similar. M45 is the Messier catalog number for an open star cluster better known as the Pleiades. Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The program note that appears in the original printed score is noted here:There is a wedding feast in progress in the village inn, with music, dancing, carousing. Mephistopheles and Faust pass by, and Mephistopheles induces Faust to enter and take part in the festivities. Mephistopheles snatches the fiddle from the hands of a lethargic fiddler and draws from it indescribably seductive and intoxicating strains. The amorous Faust whirls about with a full-blooded village beauty in a wild dance; they waltz in mad abandon out of the room, into the open, away into the woods. The sounds of the fiddle grow softer and softer, and the nightingale warbled his love-laden song. Mephisto Waltz No. 1 is paired with a work preceding it, Midnight Procession (Der Nächtliche Zug), however this piece is not as widely performed. Liszt later transcribed the waltz into a piano duet and a virtuosic solo piano work. Each of these versions were written around the same time, roughly 1859-62. The orchestral version also has an alternate ending, which is softer and fades away. This arrangement features both endings. This work was then followed by three more Mephisto Waltzes. No. 2 was also written as both an orchestral and piano work, while Nos. 3 and 4 were for piano only. Of the four, the first is the most popular, although the third is also praised as highly musically. Born in 1485, Hernando Cortez was a Spanish adventurer rewarded for his courage and skills in battle. In the spring of 1519 with 11 ships and 700 men, he landed on the newly discovered gulf coast of Mexico looking for gold that was rumored to be found there. To ensure that none of his men deserted him, he burned all except one of his fleet of ships. He quickly conquered the Aztec empire and its emperor Montezuma. There, he eventually killed Montezuma and seized the gold and treasure that had belonged to the Aztecs for centuries. By the end of 1520, he had won Mexico for Spain and put it under Spanish rule. As a reward, King Charles V of Spain made him governor and captain general of Mexico. He died in Seville, Spain in 1536. Although Cortez’ aims were for conquest and gold – many which resulted in suffering and misery for the Aztecs, there were interesting cultural side effects as Spain ruled Mexico. Ancient Indian folk tunes and ceremonial music were suddenly intermixed with the higher culture of the baroque and renaissance music from Spain. Much of what we now know of today in the way of Latin styles of music owes its roots to the invasion of Cortez and culture changes he inadvertently brought with him. The Golden Helmet Of Cortez musically commemorates the story of Cortez as he landed in Mexico on that spring day in 1519. The piece is a compilation of many Latin and Mexican musical styles. Some of these are light in style, others evoke the battles that took place. These are all brought together in an exciting programmatic style to be enjoyed by all. 2016 Arrangement New Release.

Its composition is intended to musically evoke the seemingly chaotic and rapidly changing flying pattern of a bumblebee. Despite the piece's being a rather incidental part of the opera, it is today one of the more familiar classical works because of its frequent use in popular culture. The piece closes Act III, Tableau 1, during which the magic Swan-Bird changes Prince Gvidon Saltanovich (the Tsar's son) into an insect so that he can fly away to visit his father (who does not know that he is alive). The duration of this is 2.07 minutes and it is a difficult level piece.

I was inspired by the beauty of sun rays piercing through the clouds in the sky, and how every combination of these light beams are unique in shape and size. These sun rays are represented through beautiful dissonances, extended fermatas, and subtle staggered percussion entrances. The piece has natural progression towards a noticeable peak, with very slight accelerations, and then slowly fades to an ending similar to that of the beginning. This is a wonderful piece to showcase the beauty in dissonance, the significance of subtlety, and offers several solo moments for every section of the band, starting with the horn and ending with the vibraphone.

My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

Ascending Everest is an exciting new work for Concert Band that endeavors to create the varying moods that I imagine would accompany such an incredible undertaking as scaling the world's tallest mountain.The piece opens with a dramatic minor chord as the behemoth is viewed in person for the first time. It then quickly delves into the business at hand with a mixture of excitement and forboding. The middle section represents the first night's base camp, as weariness and doubt cause the climber great trepidation over what is yet to come. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? The tone begins a subtle change as renewed determination sets in, and the climax rings of victory!This work is for Concert Band, however the standard instrumentation is not strictly adhered to. In my experience, most high school or community bands don't have anyone to play bassoon and so I elected not create such a part. Also, you will note that there is no Percussion 2. A few years ago, I attended a concert by the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a group of passionate students, at the National University of Singapore. They performed Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which has continuously captivated me through the wild, grotesque sounds. Recently, my friend, Joshua suggested that I could write an orchestral transcription for Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. I have decided to keep the instrumentation to a minimum, where smaller size bands can give it a try without the fear of not owning unusual auxiliary instruments, but still able to maintain the original orchestral sounds. The original program notes by Berlioz is as follows: He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath ... Roar of delight at her arrival ... She joins the diabolical orgy ... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies irae, the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies irae.

Starting from the traditional Christmas carol, this arrangement quotes from a number of classical composers (Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Bach) and goes through a number of musical styles (from medieval music to 1920's Jazz) to underline the humourous idea of such an accumulation of disparate objects suggested by the song. There'll Always Be an England is an English patriotic song, written and distributed in the summer of 1939, which became highly popular following the outbreak of the Second World War. It was composed and written by Ross Parker and Hughie Charles. A popular version was sung by Vera Lynn. It has been arranged here for the Concert Band with an optional Vocal part. Percussion parts include Glockenspiel, Timpani, and Drum Set. There are parts for both Horns in Eb and F, Euphonium TC or BC, and Basses in Eb, Bb, and C. Edvard Grieg composed his Funeral March in Memory of Rikard Nordraak in 1866, in honour of his friend and fellow Norwegian composer Rikard Nordraak, who had died in March of that year at the age of 23. Grieg deeply respected his fellow musician and took no delay in producing the work. The march was originally written as a piano piece in A minor; Grieg also produced transcriptions of it for brass choir and wind band, in Bâ™ minor. Grieg valued the work greatly, bringing it along on all of his travels. In one letter he made it clear that he wished the piece to be played at his own funeral, as best as possible. It was played, in an orchestration by Grieg's friend and colleague Johan Halvorsen. This edition follows Grieg's own instrumentation but in a modern transposisition for the piccolo, flutes, trumpets, horns and trombones.

Shades of Eltham (Eltham Concert Band - 35 Years of Music) - Concert Band VersionDedicated to Ern and Beattie Shade for their contribution to the Eltham Concert Band. The title of this piece is a play on words, of course, indicating both the Shades themselves and the various shades or moods of the music or even perhaps, the shady bushland setting of the area itself. I composed this piece with a few simple ideas in mind. The letters E and A in the word Eltham suggested to me an interval of a fourth, or the other way around, an interval of a fifth – which are both used in many of entries of the themes and musical motifs throughout the work – especially the brass. There are several variations and counter melodies within the work: a bright two-four march-like theme, probably the Main theme, and a variation of this theme in slower three-four time in a minor key with two counter melodies - representing a gentler contrasting mood. On occasions, two or even three themes play simultaneously. A bridging passage in four-four occurs about the two thirds into the composition leading up to a restatement of the main theme. The final climax or Coda actually has both three four melody against the two-four one resolving in the last few bars in a dramatic way.I hope you enjoy my musical tribute to the Shades.
