But he already had a mature mastery of orchestral writing, along with the courage to defy convention: A march takes the place of the normal triple-meter scherzo movement. It's an unconventional march that starts with an elegant melody, surveys a wide range of emotions, and dissipates into a quiet ending. It's really neither a march nor a scherzo, but something all its own.This colorful concert band arrangement was written for an adult community band. It's appropriate for a college or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. It features two solo flutes, two solo clarinets, soprano saxophone, vibraphone, and marimba (the vibraphone part is cued to allow performance without the marimba). It also requires strong oboe and bassoon players. Extensive cues allow rehearsal and performance without oboes, bassoons, soprano saxophone, and/or mallet percussion.  Duration: approx. 5:00. The audio clip is a complete performance by the Peninsula Symphonic Winds. THREE CHRISTMAS CAROLS - SET ONE features the following selections - Silent Night, Sleep, Holy Babe, and Lo, How a Rose. This medley has been written with flexible scoring options permitting performance by a wide variety of wind instruments. While this selection may be performed as a quartet, best results are obtained by performance of at least five heterogeneous instruments. The full score has been revised and groups instruments in an easier to read format. The vibraphone part is optional but adds an additionally rich sonority and texture.Performance duration is about 4 minutes and 35 seconds utilizing the tempi suggested. The following concert-pitched key centers are found in this selection: Bb Major, F Major, C Major, and Db Major. While any combination of wind instruments are possible, the instruments in the accompanying mp3 audio file primarily comprise a woodwind septet, and a keyboard percussion instrument. They include: 2 Flutes, 1 Bb Clarinet, 1 Alto Sax, 1 Bassoon, 1 Tuba, and vibraphone.

Some of my favorite memories as a student in public school band include performing various arrangements of J.S. Bach. I loved sitting in the trumpet section listening across the ensemble to how the various melodic lines would rapidly fizz around from instrument to instrument.This short, two movement work is designed to foster this listening experience in your students. The first movement consists of a simple binary form, with woodwinds and brass trading off a slow melodic line. The ensemble then combines to allow for the exploration of top to bottom, back to front balance and blend without having to worry about too much technique. There are also moments of modernity in the harmonic structure designed to help anchor the movement to the present.The second movement is a fugue with a long melodic subject and two countersubjects, the point of which is to apply the listening lessons from the first movement to the more technical aspects of the second. Fugue subjects are announced with percussion entrances to focus the listening experience across the ensemble and the audience.
