An original work of mine entitled ''Gettin' Bluesy'' written for young concert band. Composed in a bluesy style with flattened 3rds & 7ths evident in the melody, this is a lovely piece with which to calm the atmosphere; and an excellent way to introduce a bluesy piece to your band members. The mood is melancholy, I did compose this after my cat sadly passed away when I was living in Norway. The melody is passed around the ensemble, akin to the conversational style one can observe in a Haydn string quartet. The brass have the opportunity for some transparent and soft muted work behind the melody scored in the woodwind. The bass guitar can be replaced with a double bass if desired. Your percussionists get the opportunity to play kit and also the vibes are used, a great work out all round! The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. Recorded for Columbia Records in 1960, it features jazz interpretations of nine movements from the original work in various styles and in a slightly different order, including more exotic instruments than would normally be found in the jazz ensemble:Overture Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes)Peanut Brittle Brigade (March)Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)Entr'acteVolga Vouty (Russian Dance)Chinoiserie (Chinese Dance)Dance of the Floreadores (Waltz of the Flowers)Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)Now fully arranged for concert band, without piano (as Ellington didn't actually play very much on the original recording) this is a difficult work, but players and audiences will love it - starring roles are given to most of the band at various points and the original solos played by the Ellington orchestra have been included for authenticity but chords added as well, should your players wish to make their own music. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. It's an arrangement that your band will adore playing!Concert Band - GRADE 3. DURATION: 2’.05’Program notes:The low woodwinds have the spotlight in this lovely piece reminiscent of a jazz waltz. Layers of counterpoint bathe the piece in an ethereal wash of beautiful textures and colours which soar above the melody line.Rehearsal notes:This study in counterpoint needs clear layers with beautifully balanced and blended dynamics and tone. The piece should build up gradually with crescendos and decrescendos carefully observed so that the band swells and fades as a whole, particularly at rehearsal figure B. The chromatic phrases at rehearsal figures B and D need to be smooth and in time, not at all hurried. The melody is a feature for the lower instruments, including tuba, and is an opportunity for these instruments to explore increased ranges and to work on a full well- rounded, lyrical tone.About the composer:Neille Williams is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer based in Canberra, Australia.
