The style of Giacommo Puccini represents the union of Italian and German opera traditions, at the same time that, under the influence of Bizet and Massenet, tooks the taste for the exotic and historical location of his operas. This is the case of the opera Tosca, wich plot was inspired in the times of Napoleon’s invasion of Italy and the confrontation between liberals and monarchists. In the third act of this opera, Cavaradossi, sentenced to death and while he is a prisoner in the Castle of Sant'Angelo, evokes the intimate moments lived with his beloved Tosca, singing the aria E lucevan le stelle, as the night dissipates and slowly the time of its execution is approaching. This transcription for symphonic band takes advantage of the wind orchestra’s sound colors and resources to achieve both the intimate character of Cavaradossi’s thoughts and the intensity and frustration he ultimately shows against his inevitable fate.

In 1838, the people of Mainz founded the Mainzer Carneval-Verein (Carnival Club of Mainz) and were searching for a lead melody for the local carnival. One of the founding members was the Austrian bandmaster Karl Zulehner (1805–1847), who got inspired by the 1840 performance in Mainz of Adolphe Adam's opera Le brasseur de Preston (1838) and used some of its musical motives to create the Mainzer Narrhallamarsch. The new tune was presented at the opening of the campaign in 1844 and became the signature tune of the Meenzer Fassenacht.

It was written for the opening of the Berlin concert hall Königsbau on 19 October 1889. The first performance in Vienna took place on 11 November 1889 by his competitor Carl Michael Ziehrer, who made his own instrumentation along a piano edition. Strauss disliked that very much. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra. Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1497138). Reitermarsch (Riders' March) was compiled based on motifs from the operetta Simplicius, which premiered in 1887. Most likely this march was first played on 18 December 1887 in the Vienna Volksgarten, but with the title Simplicius March. With certainty it was performed by Eduard Strauss on 15 January 1888 in the Vienna Musikverein. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2010 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria, repeated on 6 January 2018 at the same event and broadcasted live by Austrian television. When arranging the overture of Rossini's opera Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) the choice of the original source is an important question, as there exist more versions in different scorings, with or without piccolo flute, with or without trombones. In this case the arranger was to be chosen the scientific original text edition published by the Rossini foundation. The arrangement is transposed from the original key E to E flat. The ad libitum parts of Euphonium and Tuba are only recommended to be used, if there is a lack of low winds and double bass players in the orchestra performing. This arrangement was first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6th January 2010 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Gioacchino Rossini composed the music 1835 originally for solo voice and piano. It is part of his song cycle Les soirées musicales with twelve pieces by various poets. This version was orchestrated and arranged in the key of A minor as prefered by prominent tenors like Luciano Pavarotti. It was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2017 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria. The solo part was sung by Thai born tenor Nutthaporn Thammathi.
