Andaluza, taken from Manuel de Falla’s piano suite Cuatro Piezas Españolas, is aimed at the mainstream high school band in the United States at the grade 4 level. Boisterous tuttis, intimate solos, and passionate melodies make for an engaging excursion into Spanish folk music that allows students to explore the adventurous harmonies of de Falla's impressionistic vocabulary. The variety of colors and energy in the modern concert band amplify the life, drama, and humanity de Falla poured into his piano version. Andaluza will thus prove a thrill for both performers and audience as it celebrates this life, drama, and humanity.Soprano Sax is called for on an expressive solo but is fully cued in oboe. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. Percussion 2: bass drum, crash cymbals, gong.The significance of Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre lies in its representation of death as the great social equalizer and its association with Halloween and the macabre. Originally an art song for voice and piano, the piece was later expanded and reworked into a tone poem for violin and large orchestra, becoming one of Saint-Saëns' most famous works.Representation of Death: Danse Macabre was inspired by the French legend that Death plays the fiddle at midnight on Halloween, causing the skeletons in the cemetery to crawl out of their graves for a dance party. The theme of death as the great social equalizer, where no one can escape the dance with death, is depicted in the music and has inspired various paintings and art pieces.Composition and Reception: The piece is in the key of G minor and scored for an obbligato violin and an orchestra of various instruments.  When it was first performed in 1875, Danse Macabre received mixed reviews, with some critics expressing anxiety due to its dissonance, use of a xylophone, and hypnotic repetitions. However, it is now considered one of Saint-Saëns' masterpieces and is widely regarded and reproduced in high and popular culture.

One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. In Seaspray, Barefoot imagines a young person running down from sand dunes into the ocean and being chased by the waves back up into the dunes, in a playful dance. The wind ensemble arrangement is scored for Piccolo, Flute 1 & 2, Oboe, Clarinet in Eb, Clarinets in Bb 1, 2 & 3, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon 1 & 2, Alto Sax 1 & 2, Tenor Sax, Bari Sax, Horn in F 1 & 2, Trumpet in Bb 1 & 2, Trombone 1 & 2, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Double Bass and 2 Percussion (Snare + Cymbals; and Bass Drum).
