My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

This four-section piece is inspired by the stunning landscapes and rich cultural traditions of Scotland. With its energetic 6/8 rhythm and soaring melodies, I hope to transport you to the rolling hills and misty moors of the Scottish Highlands. The first section sets the stage with a lively introduction featuring the full band. Next it takes us on a musical adventure through the rugged terrain of Scotland, complete with driving percussion and soaring woodwind melodies. In the third section we get a nice chordal chromatic section. Finally, the fourth section brings the piece to a triumphant conclusion and the band comes together in a grand finale.

We've been through many good and bad emotions. We have been recieving news, some good, some upsetting. Some days we are so happy, we want to jump everywhere and on others we want to bawl our eyes out. And that's how it is. Jolt plays through all of these emotions, the good and bad ones. It represent how sometimes, we are so happy about something, but it doesnt work out. It represents how sometimes, we hope for something that will never occur. It represents how sometimes in life, there are things that upset us. But in the end, we are stronger than those bad feelings. We are stronger than sadness, than the madness we sometimes feel dealing with those challenges. Sometimes we feel thrown around. At the end of the day, it will always get better. It will always work out. __________________________________________________ *As you may have noticed, this piece is graded with three different levels. Most instruments have two levels: beginner and advanced (grade 1 and 4), but some of the most common instruments in a concert band (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet and percussion) have an extra intermediate level (grade 2.5). This piece has been written for bands or classes that have student of different levels, but still want to play together. This is a unique young band march. You may perform it at quarter = 120 OR in cut time -half=96. It works either way. The score instrumentation is for beginning band--flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, xylophone, snare/bass drum and cymbals. For bands playing it in cut time, there are parts (but not on score) in the PDF file for oboe (flute double) and bassoon-bass clarinet--bari sax (all trombone double). You will have to listen to the MP3 recording to believe your ears. NOTICE: THE SAMPLE STARTS WITH THE 4/4 VERSION AND WHEN IT IS OVER, THE 2/2 VERSION WILL BE PLAYED. Very few parts exceed one octave in the key of Bb. The flute/oboe part has one C above the high Bb. The rhythms are fairly easy, but in cut time, they sound challenging. There is lots of dynamic contrast, and your students will learn about lip slurs and march style. The clarinet and bass clarinet parts do not go across the break. The biggest challenge will be endurance for your brass players, but since there are no first and second parts, the lead players might can get a little rest time in the big tutti sections. The horn is kept in the middle range with tenor sax doubling.There are a few solos towards the beginning, but the soloists are getting to play the fun melody of this little two in one young band composition. I hope you enjoy this two marches for the price of one.

I composed this piece because I wanted to get myself used to composing for large ensembles, wind ensemble particularly. This composition took the most time and energy in creating the biggest work I have taken on thus far. This piece allowed me to get a better insight of my creativity as well as incorporate the lessons I have learned from my music professors. The experience was well worth it for I now know what I am capable of in my compositions and I look forward to working on more works in large ensembles in the future. During the time I composed this piece, I was expecting to have it performed around April 2020. However, that was around the time when COVID started spreading around the world and so that experience was lost to me. I hope someday it will be performed under better days.

So I had another look and made it more playable by bands of a lesser technical aptitude.It is dedicated to all the volunteers, who give up their time, to make the Royal British Legion the steadfast organisation it has become. They truly are the unsung heroes of the charity. I hope this march pays them the compliment it is meant to. There will soon be a brass band version available.Page 11 is a useful advice sheet for printing.I hope your band enjoys playing it, be it on the march or a concert.

This lyrical piece is a delightful way to introduce your young band to ballad style. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Floridaon the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferrybarges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fishto provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to beso in the future. The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, thisrepresents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is alinear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you canpicture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. Thesecond strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Triorepresents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have feltknowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts thatwere put forth to secure the land and build a community. This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Florida on the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferry barges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fish to provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to be so in the future.   The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, this represents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is a linear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you can picture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. The second strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Trio represents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have felt knowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts that were put forth to secure the land and build a community. This piece was originally written for an ensemble of 18 students to give them something that would engage and/or challenge each player. I wanted to expose them to shifting meters and relied on a minimalist idea for building the groove that drives the piece. It is important to maintain a feeling of motion throughout. The percussion section will be kept busy moving between instruments, and they are featured in the middle-it should sound like magic sparkles. I added traditional instrumentation to this, and there is some writing more difficult than grade 3 (particularly in the oboe part since originally there was no flute). Still, I think it is a fun piece for the right group. The meter is mostly 5/8 with the occasional 6/8 or 4/8 thrown in. The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. The download includes the full score and set of parts. Composed in an overture style, the piece begins with a powerful introductory statement pedaling on Bb major. After the introduction, the second theme is introduced by the clarinet section, accompanied by cabasa and triangle. The B section begins at Rehearsal C, featuring a light, legato approach. The piece picks back up at Rehearsal D with another rousing statement of the first theme, and propels itself to a thrilling close with a restatement of the introduction. Have fun! I hope you enjoy playing and rehearsing this piece as much as I did writing it, and you are certain to have something to celebrate after a performance of this piece!

It does “borrow†the theme from Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg in his Peer Gynt Suite.This is a great piece for the fall or spring concert. All the wind ranges are within the range of a 2nd-year or 1st-year 2nd semester year player. Only the Clarinets, Alto Sax and Trumpet have split parts. This is mostly for range and harmonic expansion. 2nd clarinets never go above the break. Low brass/WW are mostly unison, but they do have some independence. At the end, ms. 66, there is an optional blood-curdling scream that is NOT notated in the parts. Have fun with this.All sections get the melody and percussion even has an 8-measure feature. The Mad Adventurer is arguably one of my most monumental works. Comprising of three movements (listed in detail below) it depicts the stress of an Adventurer and his eventual insanity. Composed for Symphonic Band, I hope you enjoy, The Mad Adventurer. I. Dangerous Waters The Great Adventurer has travelled for many years. He has fought in great battles and discovered beautiful treasures. It is for the immense joy he quests. The adventures continue to become more challenging, yet the Great Adventurer always succeeds. II. The Tormented Heart Contrary to his fun from quests, the Adventurer now has a family back home, and he worries what would happen to them if he didn't return. His constant absence caused by his desire for adventure is straining the relationship with his family. He loves them but is always away from them. All the while, death looms above and threatens to end the adventures. III.The Madman The stress and torment of his quests are finally getting to the Adventurer. His emotions are becoming out of control and his mind, irrational. The Adventurer realizes he must return to his family to save his sanity, if not his life. He sets out on one final quest to return home. The trials more mounting than ever before. The once, Great Adventurer is going insane. Until, finally, he crests the hill, and reunites with his family. In the joyful arms of his wife and kids, he is once again, happy.Note: PDF includes a legal-sized score and a letter-sized set of parts.

Fracas Attackas is a fun piece for beginning band that is composed using the first five notes of the concert Bb scale. There are two basic wind parts doubled throughout the instruments, and the mallets closely follow the winds up until the bridge of the piece. There are four more percussion parts, but the piece may be performed with only snare drum and bass drum. If you have the players, add the crash cymbals and then the toms to fill out the parts. A fracas is defined as a noisy quarrel or brawl. Attackas is, of course, just a made-up word, but it rhymes quite nicely! I hope you and your band have a lot of fun with this piece! A programmatic piece depicting the tale of the Itsy Spider. The composition starts out very bright and joyful (the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout). Quickly, it becomes darker, as the clouds and thunder emerge (down came the rain and washed the spider out). After the period of darkness and melancholy, the song's key gets brighter and brighter, symbolizing the clouds slowly dissipating and sunlight emerging (out came the sun and dried up all the rain). The song ends joyously (and the itsy bitsy spider climbed out the spout again), celebrating the spider's survival of the perilous weather. Fantasy on Itsy Bitsy Spider has the following instrumentation: Flue/Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Timpani, Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Cymbal. The song features an oboe solo, in the middle. I hope you enjoy this thrilling piece that is sure to be a pleasure to perform and hear!

Sometimes we see patterns as events unfold in our lives. Departures was written following and during a time when I witnessed a number of people leaving-moving away, taking a different path in life, or leaving this life altogether. A single, sighing motive unites all three sections of this piece. It is heard right away in the flutes, takes a yearning tone in the middle section, and returns wistfully at the end of the piece. As with every departure in life, one is left wondering what the arrival will be like. The first and last sections of the piece are in a moderate to slow 6/8 while the middle is in 4/4. There are brief solos for horn, alto sax, and oboe (cued in clarinet). The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. After two years of off and on progress with months in between, I finally had the motivation to finish my third wind band piece, Nuclear. When first composing this piece, I imagined an apocalyptic scene, similar to that of those video games set in some kind of wasteland (hence the name, Nuclear). The piece is completely through-composed, and around the 3:30 minute mark, I decided to shift the theme from armageddon to rebuilding and hope. Here, the piece makes a sudden character change with a rather abrupt transition, which actually just results from my lack of skill in writing... Either way, the overall story that I am trying to tell, whether it be literal or philosophical, is that life will eventually return to normal, as one takes absorbed damage and attempts to heal. This is applicable especially today, as the 2020 pandemic has torn apart lives from all cultures and backgrounds. Someday, we will be celebrating the moment that we can all be together again. Please, if you like wind band repertoire, consider giving this piece a listen and find the story it can tell in your life. Thank you, and enjoy Nuclear.
