The power ballad was written by Diane Warren. The song received its airplay premiere on May 12, 1998, and was officially added to radio a week later. I Don't Want to Miss a Thing, in the United States, was originally supposed to be a radio-only single from Armageddon: The Album, but due to popular demand, Columbia Records issued the song commercially in August 1998. It subsequently debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, giving the band their first and only number-one single in their home country, remaining at the top for four weeks. 'Have You Met Miss Jones?' is a song from the 1937 Broadway musical I'd Rather Be Right, a Depression-era political satire set in New York City about Washington politics and political figures such as President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The plot centres on Peggy Jones and her boyfriend Phil, who needs a raise in order for them to get married; the President ultimately steps in and solves their dilemma. This jazz standard has been covered by many artists over the years, including George Shearing, Anita O'Day, Frank Sinatra, Robbie Williams and Seth MacFarlane - it is also cited as a potential inspriation, in its bridge passage, for saxophonist John Coltrane. This arrangement has been created from the jazz combo version by Michael Philip Mossman and features short solos (with suggested lines and chords) for clarinet, flute, trumpet and alto sax, with drum breaks towards the end.

Colin Kirkpatrick’s National Anthems Express KOSOVO: Himni i Kosovës This quick and easy national anthem arrangement is essential for traveling musicians, bands, instrumental groups and both amateur and professional ensembles. You can play it with any virtually any combination of instruments: symphonic band, clarinet choir, brass ensemble, brass band, solos, duets and trios - almost anything! This arrangement is in six independent parts each transposed into a variety of keys. For the most satisfying sound you’ll need to get a good balance between each part possibly with an emphasis on the melodic line. If you have a non-standard ensemble, you can pick 'n' mix as required. The piano reduction can fill missing parts or can be used as the basis for an accompaniment. This arrangement consists of a two-page score with seven instrumental staves and three percussion staves. The following parts are printed on separate pages. The score and all the parts are contained in the same pdf file. Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. A promise to stand by... this phrase indicate loyalty, steadfastness, being a man of one's word, knowing that integrity and honor are the enduring qualities by which we will be judged; not fame, fortune, influence, or other worldly measures. It is no surprise, therefore, that this phrase was incorporated by Lou Fortunate and Msgr Herman Kucyk, of blessed memory, into the alma mater of Divine Child High School. When I was approached by Mr. Bush and the Divine Child Band Boosters about the possibility of writing a piece to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the band program I was excited, flattered, and--most of all--humbled that I should be chosen out of many worthier candidates, in my estimation. Divine Child has had, for the longest time--since the beginning, it seems--a vibrant and thriving fine arts program involving music (both vocal and instrumental), theatre, and the visual arts as well as literature and poetry. I began to conceive of a work that would pay homage to each of these arts musically and be a celebration of all that Divine Child has to offer. One of my favourite composers, Gustav Mahler, famously said, a symphony must be like the world; it must contain everything. In the 1988 vice-presidential debate, Lloyd Bentsen famously said to Dan Quayle, Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. A voice in my head said, Benjamin, you're no Gus Mahler. As the discarded drafts in the recycle bin took on a life of their own, I eventually dismissed the idea as impractical, and even vainglorious. I settled upon a more general idea to make the music about the band program. Most every student in the band program goes through the rigors of marching band and performs at the Falcon football games where they become intimate with the Three School Songs: the Falcon Fanfare, the Fight Song, and the Alma Mater. Taking the latter piece as my inspiration, I meditated upon the mission of the school: a promise to educate us in body, mind, and spirit. Divine Child High School stands by her promise, recruiting some of the best teachers in the area to guide us through the tumultuous adolescent years. We students, too, have a promise: to strive to be worthy of this gift, and to accept it and use it for the betterment of society. In band class, under Leo Tallieu, I learned to listen; to contribute to the group; to consider my part in relation to the whole ensemble; to show leadership when needed; and to be a role player when needed. And so, my conception of the piece changed. I wanted to use melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic devices that would be familiar to all DCHS band students, but to use them in a new and different way; to recontextualize them. In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

This work was commissioned by Ron Inyoue for the Arctic Winer Games in Fairbanks, Alaska 2014. When Ron Inouye first discussed a fanfare for the Arctic Winter Games to be held in Fairbanks in 2014, he asked me to somehow represent the peoples of the north and to include something of native drumming, particularly, Inuit drumming. Since the fanfare is for the games, it needs to be able to be used in its entirity or in parts depending on how much time or the purpose of the fanfare in a given situation. This fanfare is therefore composed with three distinct sections that can be used separately or together depending on the circumstance. The Opening four measures of the brass is reminiscent of much of my music representing the Aurora Borealis. The Drumming is inspired by Inuit and Yupik drumming. I use the two different types of drum and blend the drumming style of the Yupik and Inuit cultures in a bit of a western context. The Yupik tradition of hard beat and soft beat is represented in the dynamics of the drums. The Inuit tradition of establishing the steady beat and then passing rhythmic patterns between the parts is represented throughout the work in all of the drum parts. There is a nod to Athabascan old time fiddle music in the choice of an Irish/Scotish traditional melody entitled The Far North. This is also a traditional Canadian Northern Tier American camping and scouting song. Finally, there is a traditional Fanfare that can be used independently to call people to an event or back from an intermission. It is my sincere hope that this fanfare represents all of us in some way and leaves enough to the listener, that they will relate their own experience of the North in the music they hear. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played. A triumphant fanfare for bands with a strong brass section! When I spoke with Ian about writing another piece for us, I suggested a fanfare - an easy idea when you have 26 players in the brass section. After receiving an electronic version of the piece, I realized it loosely followed the musical form known as a rondo. The opening fanfare returns four times in the piece, while the primary melody returns three times after its initial statement. Each return is different than the original statement. A third, darker theme in the lower voices, is played twice in the piece, which offers a nice contrast to the opening fanfare and primary theme. Thus, Fanfare and Rondo seemed like an apt title for the work. - Mr. Michael Hintzman The Northwestern High School Band would like to thank the Oulu Community Theater for their financial support in the commissioning of Fanfare and Rondo. Cururu is one of the genres of Brazilian country music that inspired the creation of this song. This song tells the story of a country person who went to live in the metropolis and reflected that it was all illusion when she was confronted with the violence and ambition typical of the big city, making her miss the simple life in the countryside. The wood stove, the mud on the ground, riding in a cart, milking the cow, eating fruit from the tree, the freedom to walk without worry are memories that lead her to believe that God willing she will one day return to her origins. This instrumental version included three solos that can be replaced by improvisation. The main melody and counterpoints alternate between suits, with the use of voicings characteristic of the style. Without a doubt, it's an excellent opportunity to expand your band's repertoire with authentically Brazilian music.

Waltzing Throught the Mid-west is Grade 2.5-3.0. This waltz uses three official state songs for source material, Hush-a-bye Ma Baby (Missouri Waltz), Beautiful Ohio (Ohio Waltz) and the Tennessee Waltz. It has one foot in traditional entertainment aspects from Wind Band's history, and the other foot in modern choices in tempo, time signature changes (including two juxtaposed feels that will challenge even your best students), along with chordal changes that keep it from sounding 'dated.' I feature several low instruments, giving them the limelight at times and with three mallet instruments written into the score, your melodic percussion have plenty to do. This piece lays well in more than one part of your lconcert line-up, including as the feature piece.
