John Ivor Holland #1025388. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1445548). My Funny Valentine was written for the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart coming of age musical 'Babes in Arms'. The song became a popular jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists. One of them was Chet Baker, for whom it became his signature song; in 2015 the Gerry Mulligan quartet's 1953 version of the song (featuring Chet Baker) was inducted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry for its cultural, artistic and/or historical significance to American society and the nation’s audio legacy. The description of the male character of Valentine in the show was consistent with Lorenz Hart's own insecurities and belief that he was too short and ugly to be loved; consequently, the lyrics are sufficiently gender-neutral to allow the song to be sung about a person of any gender. This concert band arrangement has been produced from the jazz ensemble version by Michael Sweeney, created in 1988.

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In) is a traditional and popular Christmas carol from England. The earliest printed version of I Saw Three Ships is from the 17th century, possibly Derbyshire, and was also published by William Sandys in 1833. The lyrics mention the ships sailing into Bethlehem, but the nearest body of water is the Dead Sea about 20 miles (32 km) away. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the three ships that bore the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century. Another possible reference is to Wenceslaus II, King of Bohemia, who bore a coat of arms Azure three galleys argent. Another suggestion is that the ships are actually the camels used by the Magi, as camels are frequently referred to as ships of the desert. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

This piece was jointly commissioned and premiered by the following bands: Armstrong Junior High School, under the direction of Rob Reams; Titusville Middle School, under the direction of Patrick Vetter; Mifflin County Middle School, under the direction of Samantha Gates. The title Fairy Tale Mystery is a combination of ideas submitted by students from each of the schools. The cover art was designed by Armstrong Jr. HS student Eliza Major. It was released as the album's second single on 28 June 1985 through Vertigo Records. The song features a guest appearance by Sting who sings the signature falsetto introduction, background vocals and a backing chorus of I want my MTV. The groundbreaking video was the first to be aired on MTV Europe when the network launched on 1 August 1987. It was Dire Straits' most commercially successful single, peaking at number 1 for three weeks on both the US Billboard Hot 100 and Top Rock Tracks chart and number 4 in the band's native UK. In July 1985, the month following its release, Dire Straits and Sting performed the song at Live Aid. At the 28th Annual Grammy Awards in 1986, Money for Nothing won Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was nominated for Record of the Year and Song of the Year as well. The Mad Adventurer is arguably one of my most monumental works. Comprising of three movements (listed in detail below) it depicts the stress of an Adventurer and his eventual insanity. Composed for Symphonic Band, I hope you enjoy, The Mad Adventurer. I. Dangerous Waters The Great Adventurer has travelled for many years. He has fought in great battles and discovered beautiful treasures. It is for the immense joy he quests. The adventures continue to become more challenging, yet the Great Adventurer always succeeds. II. The Tormented Heart Contrary to his fun from quests, the Adventurer now has a family back home, and he worries what would happen to them if he didn't return. His constant absence caused by his desire for adventure is straining the relationship with his family. He loves them but is always away from them. All the while, death looms above and threatens to end the adventures. III.The Madman The stress and torment of his quests are finally getting to the Adventurer. His emotions are becoming out of control and his mind, irrational. The Adventurer realizes he must return to his family to save his sanity, if not his life. He sets out on one final quest to return home. The trials more mounting than ever before. The once, Great Adventurer is going insane. Until, finally, he crests the hill, and reunites with his family. In the joyful arms of his wife and kids, he is once again, happy.Note: PDF includes a legal-sized score and a letter-sized set of parts.

Targetted at intermediate concert/school/symphonic bands (Grade 5 ABRSM)The second of my 'Peebles Beltane Festival Suite' is 'Liltin doon the glen' inspired from the line in the Festival Song. It's around the turn of the 20th century and the young lassies from the many farms and villages from the glens surrounding Peebles, leave their homes to come and enjoy the festival - 'To gather on the village green and hail the festal day' 'Lassies blooming fresh and fair cam liltin’ doon the glen' - they pause for breath now and again and as they join their friends along the way, the dance intensifies into a mazurka style. At the fanfares herald the many compliments they get from 'Huntsman gallant and sheperds grey, doughtyand blythsome men' they encounter along the way. It culminates with all the lassies getherin' at the Mercat Cross.
