Ijexá is available in full version and with its individual parts.The Ijexá rhythm is a musical form originating in Afro-Brazilian culture, specifically within the traditions of the Jeje people from the former Kingdom of Dahomey (now Benin). Also known as Jexá, Jeje, or Ijeji, Ijexá is often associated with Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion.The history of the Ijexá rhythm dates back to the period of slavery in Brazil when Africans of Jeje ethnicity were brought to the country as slaves. They brought with them their culture, religious traditions, and, of course, their musical expressions. Ijexá is one of the musical manifestations of these people, which developed primarily in the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil.The Ijexá rhythm is characterized by a steady beat and a specific rhythmic pattern. It is played in binary meter, with emphasis on the second beat. Instruments used in the execution of Ijexá include atabaques (drums), agogô, xequerê, among others. The lyrics of the songs often address themes related to religion, ancestry, and Afro-Brazilian culture.Over time, Ijexá transcended its original religious context and became incorporated into other Brazilian musical genres, such as popular music, MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), and samba. Goin' Home For Band (also called Going Home)Based on the Largo from the New World Symphony By Antonin Dvorak Arranged by Jari Villanueva ScoreSet of PartsSubstitute part for Baritone TC providedGoin' Home, is based on the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak's famous Largo theme from his Symphony No. 9 (5) (From the New World), Op. 95. His symphony was composed while he was in America and was first performed by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall on December 16, 1893. It has been said that Dvorak's themes in his symphony were inspired by American folk melodies, especially Afro-American or American Indian. But his themes are just as similar to Bohemian folk music and most likely from that music. This arrangement is based on the one played in the movie Clear and Present Danger by the United States Air Force Band. It has been used at presidential funerals for the departure ceremonies at Andrews Air Force Base for Presidents Reagan, Ford and Bush. It was used in 1998 for the dis-interment ceremony for the Vietnam Unknown at Arlington National Cemetery and is still used today by military bands at Arlington.Jari Villanueva earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Music from Kent State University, Ohio. He retired from the US Air Force Band in Washington DC where he spent 23 years as a trumpeter, bugler and staff arranger. He started his publishing company JV MUSIC in 1995. Admittedly, the choice of title for this work for novice wind ensemble was based more on what would rhyme with the word ‘Tumbarumba’, than staying true to the style of the North American Latin groove made popular in the 1930s! It does; however, introduce players to some of the musical aspects found in Latin American and Afro-Cuban music in an accessible way. Written for and premiered by the Sturt Public School Band (near the town of Tumbarumba) this fun work utilises narrow instrumental tessituras, and incorporates simple off off-beat entries, section solis, layered melodies, and a fun bass line that will keep your low woodwind and brass players engaged and audience tapping their feet all the way through! The hymns are scored in four parts and could be used with virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments. They are presented in a set of three books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus separate parts in a variety of useful transpositions. Parts 1 and 2 (soprano and alto) are provided in B flat, E flat and C (8ve higher than concert); Part 3 (tenor) in B flat (9th above concert), E flat, F and C (bass clef) and Part 4 (bass) in B flat, E flat and C. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment and means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. The piano part too means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. Premiered in Luxembourg, in December 2010, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos.Program Notes:This piece is named for Yemanya (pronounced Yeh-MAHN-jah or Yeh-MAHN-jee), the Brazilian/African nurturing mother goddess of the ocean. She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away. The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone. Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.
