Commissioned by Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California in 2014 for his 8th Annual Concert of Premieres, the work features a solo trumpet in a quiet piece with both a 40's big band feel and a reminiscence of the Western cowboy influence felt in the Imperial Valley of California. The work was premiered by 7th grade trumpeter Precious Esquer and the Wilson Jr. H. S. Band with the composer conducting on May 21, 2015, in the Wilson Jr. High School Gymnasium, El Centro, California. Versions are also available for with the solo part covered by flute, oboe, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bassoon, French horn, baritone horn (TC or BC), trombone, or tuba. PROGRAM NOTE: Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, has been commissioning works, both new works and modern arrangements of old works, for nine years for an annual Concert of Premieres each May. He commissioned me to arrange this military march by Juan de Arriaga for his 9th Annual Concert of Premieres for the 2015-2016 Academic year. Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola (January 27, 1806 – January 17, 1826) was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed the Spanish Mozart after he died, because, like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was both a child prodigy and an accomplished composer who died young. They also shared the same first and second baptismal names; and they shared the same birthday, January 27 (fifty years apart). The Marcha Militar was written in 1820 when Arriaga was 14 years old. The original is scored for requinto (a small, 3/4-size guitar tuned in F, a fourth above the normal quitar), piccolo in D, two clarinets in B-flat, two small trumpets in B-flat, two large trumpets in B-flat, two bassoons in B-flat, serpent in A-flat, trombone in B-flat, triangle, chimes, cymbals, side drum, and bass drum. I have arranged the piece for a modern band of piccolo, flute, oboe, three clarinets in B-flat, bass clarinet in B-flat, alto sax in E-flat, tenor sax in B-flat, bari sax in E-flat , bassoon, French horn in F, three trumpets in B-flat, baritone horn (with parts for both bass clef and transposing B-flat treble clef),trombone, tuba, triangle, snare drum, cymblas, bass drum, and glockenspiel. As this arrangement was originally meant for a junior high school band, some notes may cause range problems for young, less experienced players. I have indicated these notes with smaller noteheads in parenthesis. While these parenthetical notes are the preferred notes, and should be played if possible, it is assumed the regular-sized note is probably the one which will probably need to be played. In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723171). In 1817, James Hewitt set Francis Scott Key's poem The Defence of Fort M'Henry (which we now better know as The Star Spangled Banner). Hewitt's original song gained some local popularity; however, throughout most of the country, people began singing the poet's words to a popular drinking song then known to many Americans, English composer John Stafford Smith's To Anacreon in Heaven (originally written for a popular gentleman's club of amateur musicians in London, the Anacreontic Society). Whereas John Stafford Smith's music was borrowed for the poem, Hewitt's music was especially composed for the poem. I was asked by Mitch Sturman, the band director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, to arrange the original piano music for his band to play at his annual spring Concert of Premieres where he presented new works he had commissioned for his band from well-known band composers, and arrangements of neglected works he felt were worthy of performance. This was one of those neglected worthy pieces by an American composer for an American poem. It is orchestrated for flute, oboe, clarinets 1-3, bass clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, bassoon, French horn, trumpets 1-2, baritone horn, trombone, tuba, timpani, snare drum, bass drum, cymbals, and glockenspiel. .

Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.723039). This is a patriotic Russian (Czarist) piece written in 1915. It describes the Imperial Russian naval vessel Slava (Glory) on patrol. While supposedly written for military wind orchestra, no known copy for band exists. The only copy is a version arranged for piano four-hands by Konstantin Chernov in the Russian State Library. Slava is a programmatic work that starts with a patriotic hymn, a bugle call to duty, on patrol, a bugle call to quarters, dangerous seas, a bugle call to secure from quarters, and a triumphant return to Mother Russia. This arrangement was made at the request of Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, CA. It was premiered on May 16, 2014, at Wilson Jr. H.S. by the Imperial High School Tiger Band, Brooke Kofford directing. The work is moderately difficult, mainly because of the use of double flats.

Commissioned by Mitch Sturman in memory of our mutual friend, composer John B. Edmondson (1933-2016). Mr. Sturman had commissioned new works for the Wilson Jr. H. S. Warrior Band in El Centro, CA for nine years for annual Concerts of Premieres. John B. Edmondson, one of America's leading composers of educational music, with over 800 compositions and arrangements in his catalog, had been commissioned by Mitch seven times for new works, including his last ever composition, Imperial County Impressions performed in May, 2016, prior to Mr. Sturman's retirement in June, 2016. The first commission John had made for Mitch was his Serenade for Solo Clarinet and Band. Mitch felt it would be a fitting tribute for me to compose a work also for solo clarinet and band. This was composed for a memorial tribute concert for John B. Edmondson at Wilson Junior High School on April 6, 2017, where the seven pieces commissioned for the Wilson Band would be performed. The solo clarinet, first clarinet, and first trumpet require moderately experienced players to play the parts musically. All the rest of the parts are easily handled by a typical junior high school band.

I was commissioned to write this arrangement for band from a piano piece discovered in an antique store by Mitch Sturman, director of the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California. Given the title of the piece, and the fact that Mr. Sturman was the band director at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, he was immediately drawn to the piece. He researched the work and could only find an identical copy at the Library of Congress. No version for band was found, even after checking with the Marine Corps Band, The President's Own, which had performed at the Inauguration. This band arrangement received its premiere by The Wilson Junior High School Band on May 25, 2016, at the Jimmie Cannon Performing Arts Theatre, El Centro, CA, with the arranger conducting. .
