America’s history is littered with chaotic events, be it school shootings, the attack on the capital, pandemics, 9/11, wars, assassinations, and horrific events yet to come. Through it all, we can feel secure knowing America has, and will, survive. This composition depicts this spirit. It opens with an unusual 4/4 setting of the beginning of “Americaâ€. This is followed by original material that depicts our normal, happy freedom. Suddenly it changes to an aleatoric section representative of a horrific event. Following is a hint of “Amazing Grace†to remember the suffering. As always happens, life returns to normal. Closing is a 4/4 treatment of the final phrase of America, with a hint of the “Star Spangled Bannerâ€. This is an excellent teaching piece for younger bands, as well as a patriotic reminder of America’s strength sure to be an audience favorite.

This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Floridaon the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferrybarges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fishto provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to beso in the future. The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, thisrepresents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is alinear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you canpicture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. Thesecond strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Triorepresents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have feltknowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts thatwere put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and manysuccesses, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is thecelebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building acity. I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

A promise to stand by... this phrase indicate loyalty, steadfastness, being a man of one's word, knowing that integrity and honor are the enduring qualities by which we will be judged; not fame, fortune, influence, or other worldly measures. It is no surprise, therefore, that this phrase was incorporated by Lou Fortunate and Msgr Herman Kucyk, of blessed memory, into the alma mater of Divine Child High School. When I was approached by Mr. Bush and the Divine Child Band Boosters about the possibility of writing a piece to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the band program I was excited, flattered, and--most of all--humbled that I should be chosen out of many worthier candidates, in my estimation. Divine Child has had, for the longest time--since the beginning, it seems--a vibrant and thriving fine arts program involving music (both vocal and instrumental), theatre, and the visual arts as well as literature and poetry. I began to conceive of a work that would pay homage to each of these arts musically and be a celebration of all that Divine Child has to offer. One of my favourite composers, Gustav Mahler, famously said, a symphony must be like the world; it must contain everything. In the 1988 vice-presidential debate, Lloyd Bentsen famously said to Dan Quayle, Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. A voice in my head said, Benjamin, you're no Gus Mahler. As the discarded drafts in the recycle bin took on a life of their own, I eventually dismissed the idea as impractical, and even vainglorious. I settled upon a more general idea to make the music about the band program. Most every student in the band program goes through the rigors of marching band and performs at the Falcon football games where they become intimate with the Three School Songs: the Falcon Fanfare, the Fight Song, and the Alma Mater. Taking the latter piece as my inspiration, I meditated upon the mission of the school: a promise to educate us in body, mind, and spirit. Divine Child High School stands by her promise, recruiting some of the best teachers in the area to guide us through the tumultuous adolescent years. We students, too, have a promise: to strive to be worthy of this gift, and to accept it and use it for the betterment of society. In band class, under Leo Tallieu, I learned to listen; to contribute to the group; to consider my part in relation to the whole ensemble; to show leadership when needed; and to be a role player when needed. And so, my conception of the piece changed. I wanted to use melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic devices that would be familiar to all DCHS band students, but to use them in a new and different way; to recontextualize them. As time went on, Bob Bush asked me if I would be able to work in a tribute to two band students who had tragically died in the last few years: Blaise H.

This musical setting of the Kyrie was written for choir by Italian composer Antonio Lotti, who spent his entire career at the famous St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.The adaptation of choir literature for use by wind players provides an ideal tool for teaching basic musicianship such as intonation, balance, and blend as well as the advanced techniques of phrasing, nuance of line, and accuracy of ensemble articulation. Because the work consists of only 4 voices, players can more readily hear and address individual, section, and ensemble problems.The score and each part is notated with the specific voice assignment (S = soprano, A = alto, T = tenor, B = bass). This allows the conductor to rehearse like groups by simply asking for all players with the alto line and so forth. I originally wrote a Brass Band version of this work to be performed by the Freedom Brass Band of Northeast Ohio in the summer of 2011 knowing that I wanted it to be connected to a well-known patriotic text. It quickly became my most popular work and I decided to arrange it for Concert Band in 2018. Because it was adapted from a Brass Band setting, some of the instrument ranges are more advanced, but can still work for an advanced high school or college band.From a young age I found inspiration in Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. As a Boy Scout, I had read it at an annual service on Memorial Day. I had also studied it in school and even heard it spoken by a Lincoln impersonator. The words from this address speak to the ideals of human equality and freedom, and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice to protect those ideals. Lincoln refers to this sacrifice as the last full measure of devotion and it is to those men and women who so bravely sacrificed that I dedicate this work.
