However, the arrangement's flexible scoring provides the most performingopportunities for smaller ensembles of all sizes and configurations, as long as all four voices are included.Furthermore, the arrangement's solo and soli passages provide varied sound textures in the context of thisflexible scoring. The piece's ample yet judiciously placed cues allow instrument combinations other than thosewritten. Directors may use discretion in assigning solo passages as solos, as section solis, or either as solos orsolis from cued parts. Requiem for the PequodCaptain Ahab’s story of obsession, and ultimate failure at the hands of Moby Dick is, of course, a well-worn cautionary tale. The tale of the Pequod, the ship that also met its demise as a result of Ahab’s actions is, in my eyes, worth examining. Requiem for the Pequod begins with Two Bells, tolled to mark the end of the day before Ahab and his crew set sail. The minor theme, played by a solo flute, sets the mood as restful, but somewhat ominous at the same time; treatments by the brass in chorale style and then the full ensemble follow. The next three sections beginning at letter A feature up-tempo variations on the main theme (Setting Sail) followed by a lively Sailor’s Shanty at letter D, both depicting carefree life at sea. A return to a melancholy minor theme at letter E portrays the tedium of Months at Sea as the Pequod and her crew travel toward their destination, unaware of the fate that awaits them. The penultimate section beginning at letter F (Fait Awaits) depicts the culminating battle, from the stirring of Moby Dick beneath the waves to the sinking of the Pequod and the death of Ahab and the crew, save Ishmael, who recounts the tragic tale in the final section Epilogue.Â

Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was the only woman to hold a professorship at a European Conservatory (Paris) in the 19th Century.  They would only allow her to teach piano, not composition, because she was undeniably a virtuoso pianist.  During her lifetime she mainly composed for piano, but also wrote works for the orchestra, including three symphonies, and a great deal of mixed chamber music. She wrote no works for wind band of any kind, yet she lived in a golden age of especially French band music. As such, I felt a new generation of music students should hear the music of this incredibly talented composer who had the misfortunate of being born female in the 19th Century. This work is certainly characteristic of the Romantic Era and would make a lovely concert overture. the main sub ject of her variations is Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. If you purchase this score (and like it), please write to me at debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc and I will send you a copy of the wav file as well as a link to her original piano work (I;'ve not taken too many liberties). If you still like it, parts may be had for $100 via Venmo or personal check. Write to debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc..
