Includes score and parts: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax 1, Alto Sax 2, Bb Trumpet, Trombone (or Baritone), Mallets, Bass Drum, and Cymbals. When I arranged this, I only had early elementary clarinet players so that part is entirely written below the break. It can be taken up an octave for more advanced players. There is a flute solo for your best flute player, it could also be omitted if necessary. The mallet part could also be omitted in a pinch. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows? Tooling-a-Round is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.

This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser.The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency.This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!

Arizona Centennial Overture was commissioned by the Arizona Commission on the Arts as part of the Centennial Legacy Project to help celebrate Arizona’s centennial. There are three versions of the compositions, chamber orchestra, full orchestra, and band. The overture pays tribute to the unique blend of the various cultures that had a part in shaping Arizona into what it is today. This six and a half minute composition is divided into three main sections. The first section begins with fanfares that announce the celebration. After thirty seconds, the introduction fades into music that pays tribute to the pioneers that migrated to Arizona. The music has a rustic quality reflecting the pioneering spirit of the ranchers, farmers, miners, and merchants who came to Arizona seeking a better way of life. This section is intended to be inclusive as it is impossible to represent each culture individually in a short musical composition. The second section pays tribute to the various Native American cultures that are a large part of Arizona’s history and its present way of life. Flutes and percussion instruments are used in the beginning of this section to represent the Native American respect for nature. This quiet section evolves into a ceremonial dance that increases in intensity. Towards the end of this section one hears fragments of the pioneer melody as these culture come together. The third section is influenced by Mariachi music to recognize the Hispanic influence in Arizona. The first part uses an original rollicking tune with four beats to the measure over syncopation. The second part contains a lyrical melody with three beats to the measure accompanied by instruments playing accents that create the Hispanic sounding grouping of six notes into three groups of two alternating with two groups of three. A brief ending using the fanfares of celebration interspersed with figures from the Native American and pioneer sections brings the work to a rousing close.The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

The original song embodies beauty as a whole, but the lyrics use that embodiment to describe the beauty of a partner the singer is falling in love with. The verse section of the song is soft but eventually thrusts the listener into a powerful chorus section. The song creates this warm summer like feeling, hence its use of major and minor 7th chords, which is very fitting for its time of release (July 15, 2022). To add to the warmth of the song, JVKE changes the pitch of the song to A=432 hertz tuning, instead of the conventional A=440 hertz tuning. Many people believe that A=432 hertz tuning decreases the listener’s heart rate and sounds more peaceful, which which perfectly fits the mood of the song. With these lyrics and musical techniques combined, GOLDEN HOUR gives the listener an amazing and moving experience, and is why it is one of the most viral songs on the internet.  This song was chosen to be arranged for the Scarsdale High School Honors Wind Ensemble because of its popularity among teenage students, as well as to welcome the new director of bands, Mr. Brian Zeller.
