I composed this piece because I wanted to get myself used to composing for large ensembles, wind ensemble particularly. This composition took the most time and energy in creating the biggest work I have taken on thus far. This piece allowed me to get a better insight of my creativity as well as incorporate the lessons I have learned from my music professors. The experience was well worth it for I now know what I am capable of in my compositions and I look forward to working on more works in large ensembles in the future. During the time I composed this piece, I was expecting to have it performed around April 2020. However, that was around the time when COVID started spreading around the world and so that experience was lost to me. I hope someday it will be performed under better days.

This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

In recent years, it is believed that it was composed by his older second cousin, Johann Ludwig Bach (1677 – 1731). Johann Ludwig was himself a Cantor and Kapellmeister, and lived in most of his life in Meiningen. There is evidence that this cantata was performed by Johann Sebastian in 1726. The key for this arrangement of Fear Does Not Possess Me is transposed from the original C Major. There are multiple substitute parts for the Solo Trumpet part. The horn, trombone, and alto clarinet are almost the same. Playing time is approximately 2:40 minutes.

A promise to stand by... this phrase indicate loyalty, steadfastness, being a man of one's word, knowing that integrity and honor are the enduring qualities by which we will be judged; not fame, fortune, influence, or other worldly measures. It is no surprise, therefore, that this phrase was incorporated by Lou Fortunate and Msgr Herman Kucyk, of blessed memory, into the alma mater of Divine Child High School. When I was approached by Mr. Bush and the Divine Child Band Boosters about the possibility of writing a piece to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the band program I was excited, flattered, and--most of all--humbled that I should be chosen out of many worthier candidates, in my estimation. Divine Child has had, for the longest time--since the beginning, it seems--a vibrant and thriving fine arts program involving music (both vocal and instrumental), theatre, and the visual arts as well as literature and poetry. I began to conceive of a work that would pay homage to each of these arts musically and be a celebration of all that Divine Child has to offer. One of my favourite composers, Gustav Mahler, famously said, a symphony must be like the world; it must contain everything. In the 1988 vice-presidential debate, Lloyd Bentsen famously said to Dan Quayle, Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. A voice in my head said, Benjamin, you're no Gus Mahler. As the discarded drafts in the recycle bin took on a life of their own, I eventually dismissed the idea as impractical, and even vainglorious. I settled upon a more general idea to make the music about the band program. Most every student in the band program goes through the rigors of marching band and performs at the Falcon football games where they become intimate with the Three School Songs: the Falcon Fanfare, the Fight Song, and the Alma Mater. Taking the latter piece as my inspiration, I meditated upon the mission of the school: a promise to educate us in body, mind, and spirit. Divine Child High School stands by her promise, recruiting some of the best teachers in the area to guide us through the tumultuous adolescent years. We students, too, have a promise: to strive to be worthy of this gift, and to accept it and use it for the betterment of society. In band class, under Leo Tallieu, I learned to listen; to contribute to the group; to consider my part in relation to the whole ensemble; to show leadership when needed; and to be a role player when needed. And so, my conception of the piece changed. I wanted to use melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic devices that would be familiar to all DCHS band students, but to use them in a new and different way; to recontextualize them. As time went on, Bob Bush asked me if I would be able to work in a tribute to two band students who had tragically died in the last few years: Blaise H.

My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter.In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music. It begins with the launch and all of the dangers and excitement of the ascent. Resistance is met while trying to escape Earth's gravity before finally reaching orbit. Space is beautiful and its majesty and wonder is reflected in the music. The conclusion depicts the reentering of Earth's orbit and the final descent to splashdown. I envisioned this piece to be more of a tone painting than a programmatic work, though I'm sure it would work just fine to have a video of a space launch projected in the background of your performance!Escape Velocity was commission by the Kansas Bandmasters Association, Dennis Kerr, President, and was premiered on July 19th, 2013 by theKBAMiddle Level Honor Band with Richard Saucedo conducting.

Some years ago, I saw a video of an orangutang sort of running about with some latin music and it was labled Salsa Time and I knew that someday I would write a piece with that title. Well, once it was finished, and I listened and meditated over what it said to me, what I heard was the westward migration of the early settlers of America, only in and through Mexico. Journey To The Setting Sun became my title, but to give it a bit more authenticity, the title is in Spanish, and has become Viaje al Atardeser.The piece opens with a train whistle. If you have none, the Flute 1 & 2 parts have it simulated. Rehearsal markers 1A through 1D serve as layers that lead to the main melody starting at A. At letter B, the Solo 1st trumpet takes on the melody with a slight variation of rhythm. There is a trombone trio from C to D. If you have 3 stong trombonists, I recommend the Eupf and Baritone TC opt out of playing through this section, in order to highlight your great trombone section. *Optional* You may, at your discretion put a fermata after the first beat of the bar before D and allow your solo trumpeter to play a free form cadenza. The mp3 has a sample of how this would sound. The cadenza would end with the pick-up to letter D and you may feel free to let that high note of the solo trumpet ring for a second or two before cuing the rest of the band in. Although from D to the a tempo 4 bars before E is a trumpet solo, the most crucial part of that section is the tambourine part going into double time, creating that extra pop and sense of urgency.This piece represents a watershed moment in my life, as it is my first composition for Concert Band.I encourage all feedback at sirlunch@gmail.comI hope you enjoy it!

The duration of the song is about 6 minutes.About the song:Winter’s Breath is an original Christmas song (original music and lyrics) composed in 2014. The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow. I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois. The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.
