M45 is the Messier catalog number for an open star cluster better known as the Pleiades. Oot-kwa-tah is dedicated to Schenectady County Community College on the forty-fifth anniversary of the college’s establishment as part of the State University of New York. The college sits on land that was once part of the Mohawk nation of the Iroquois Confederacy. Oot-kwa-tah is inspired by the Iroquois legend of M45, the Pleiades star cluster. The Iroquois tell a story about seven children who met each day and danced for hours at a time instead of doing chores. An old man appeared to them one day as they danced. He shone magnificently like silver and was clad from head to toe in brilliant white feathers. The old man warned them to stop dancing lest something terrible happen to them. Ignoring the old man’s warning and growing more and more hungry and lightheaded the children began to rise into the air. If only they had listened to me, the old man thought. As the children’s parents gathered, one little boy heard his father’s voice below. The little boy looked down and saw his father. At that instant he fell back to earth. The other children continued to float higher and higher into the sky to become the Pleiades star cluster.The Iroquois call them Oot-kwa-tah and are reminded of these reckless children each time they see a falling star.

As a veteran elementary band director,I am keenly aware of what students are able to accomplish at this level. March of the Shadows is a fun, slightlychallenging, and completely achievable work. It is a work that would be useful at the beginning of the school yearwhen it feels too summery to begin holiday music. March of the Shadows would be perfect for a Halloween orAutumn Concert.March of the Shadows begins with a whistle! It calls the show by announcing each new section of the piece. (Astudy of form.) It even reacts to a momentary modulation. The whistle part has all sorts of fun staging potential,including having it played by the director! The initial whistle is followed by a percussion introduction which sets thebeat. Seven percussion parts, three of them optional, have been included so that everyone in a large percussionsection will be kept engaged and out of trouble! The body of the work includes two alternating themes, one dark andshadowy in minor, the other bright, heroic and slightly syncopated in major. Every part gets the melody at somepoint, even the low brass and woodwinds! Ranges are all standard for early second-year band players, i.e. clarinetsdo not go over the break, trumpets do not go higher than middle line B, the snare drum part is sprinkled with basicrudiments such as flams and paradiddles. Even the horn gets a crack at the tune! Every part is fun, interesting andeducational.

AS NIGHTTIME STARS SHINE takes the listener to a place of quiet serenity looking into the vastness of the night sky while spotting brilliant nighttime phenomena such as a passing comet, meteor shower, or the colorful Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). No matter the reason, the nighttime sky never disappoints. While lyrical in nature, percussion parts for up to seven percussionists (more if parts are doubled) are included, with several parts optional for those bands with fewer percussionists. A delightful little waltz that sounds a bit off kilter because it has seven-measure phrases. To balance that, there are also two countermelodies presented, with the final A section featuring the main melody and both countermelodies in a grand calliope sound. The Cantummit Waltz is called that because I found it hard to hum a few bars when asked to do so by some people who were helping me name it. So they suggested that I call it the I Can't Hum It Waltz.
