Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1505894). Giuseppe Verdi had the ambition to get some of his operas first performed in Paris. So he composed Don Carlos first in French, and he also had to deliver a ballet. Ballo della regina is kept as an interlude in the third act of the opera, which premiered on 11 March 1865 at Opéra National de Paris. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg. Due to an overlength program they performed not the whole ballet music, but only the final. It was first time performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2017 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria. This piece is elegant and suited for Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, and of course, Marching Band.The piece is one minute long and is meant to be suited next to other Egyptian features, such as the other movement of The Sands of Time. In the second movement of The Sands of Time, we further into Egyptian mythology with a cross arrangement of Go Down Moses, an African American Spiritual about the Harriet Tubman, whose codename was Moses among the slaves at the time and Aquarium, by Camille Saint-Saens from Carnival of The Animals.At the surface level, the concepts of these pieces have nothing in common, but musically, their melodies are quite similar. In May of 1944, Sherman tanks of the Canadian 3rd Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment (The Governor General's Horse Guards) entered the Liri Valley, southeast of Rome, beginning Operation Diadem—the drive that would eventually break through the heavily fortified German defences of the Gustav and Hitler Lines, and liberate Rome.When the regiment left Italy in early 1945, its mission accomplished, it left behind 61 fallen comrades (out of a total of 71 members of the regiment killed during the War).To them, to Trooper Ed Stafford, the regiment’s last surviving veteran of the Italian campaign, and to all who have served, this concert march is dedicated.Drawing inspiration from classic film soundtracks, the march celebrates the courage, spirit, and heroism of Canada's soldiers and all those who take up arms for their country.Â

Symphonie fantastique is a piece of program music that tells the story of an artist gifted with a lively imagination who has poisoned himself with opium in the depths of despair because of hopeless, unrequited love. Berlioz provided his own preface and program notes for each movement of the work. Convinced that his love is spurned, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of narcotic, while too weak to cause his death, plunges him into a heavy sleep accompanied by the strangest of visions. He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned, led to the scaffold and is witnessing his own execution. The procession advances to the sound of a march that is sometimes sombre and wild, and sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a dull sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a final thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow. Berlioz claimed to have written the fourth movement in a single night, reconstructing music from an unfinished project, the opera Les francs-juges. The movement begins with timpani sextuplets in thirds, for which he directs: The first quaver of each half-bar is to be played with two drumsticks, and the other five with the right hand drumsticks. The movement proceeds as a march filled with blaring horns and rushing passages, and scurrying figures that later show up in the last movement. NOTES: - The two timpani part can be played by only the 2 pairs of timpani. - Measure 93 and 100: Clarinet 1, 2 and 3 play one octave lower as written.

Appearing in the opera “Lohengrinâ€, it is a march played for the bride's entrance at many formal weddings. The tune becomes popular in wedding celebration since 1858. The flexible instrumentation enables a mixture of instruments, from small ensemble to orchestra, to share the joy of wedding celebration. This is the march from Sergei Prokofiev's opera of the same name. Arranged for concert band, it has very quirky melodies and harmonies. It's listed as a grade 3 due to the short length. The ranges and rhythms are very playable for most groups. It's the intervals, harmonies, and tunings that make it more difficult for younger groups to play.

He wrote his own libretto, basing it on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance, or The Love for Three Oranges by Carlo Gozzi, and conducted the premiere, which took place at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921. The 'March' was used by CBS in the radio-drama series 'The FBI in Peace and War' from 1944 to 1958 and also by Prokofiev himself in his ballet, 'Cinderella'. This arrangement uses all the colour of today's symphonic band and would make an excellent programme item in a concert of opera music.

Giacommo Puccini, represents the union of Italian and German opera traditions, greatly influenced by Verdi, of whom he is considered his successor, and also by Wagner, Bizet, and Debussy. The main feature of his style was the eclecticism, the incorporation and assimilation of various languages and resources in his profession. Many of the musical concepts, as well as the connection between music and the stage, were the harbinger of what would rule in film music a few decades later. Puccini tooks from the French opera, under the influence of Bizet and Massenet, the taste for the exotic and historical location of his operas. In the case of Turandot, set in ancient China, the opera tells the story of the cruel princess Turandot who, in revenge for a sullied ancestor, beheads her suitors if three riddles are not answered. An unknown prince –Calaf– postulates by answering her three enigmas and challenging her to be the one to find out her name. Turandot orders that no one sleep in Peking until the name of the prince is known, Calaf, who has issued the challenge that if his name is not discovered, princess Turandot must marry him. At the beginning of the third act, the prince sings the aria –Nessun Dorma– convinced that the princess's efforts to discover his name will be in vain. Puccini began the composition in January 1921 and in March 1924 he had already completed the opera up to the final duet. However, a few months later he would pass away, leaving unfinished sketches of the end of Turandot. Franco Alfano was commissioned to finish it, premiering it two years later, in 1926. Currently, it is the fourth most performed Puccini opera worldwide, after the well-known trio La Boheme, Tosca and Madama Butterfly.
