The narrator describes a “dark town†ball which ends with a cakewalk. Tis version includes choreography for four couples. The piece was then published in this version in 1902. In 1906, a shorter version for piano solo was published, which uses fewer thems and omits the narration. This version uses the original 1902 version as a basis. This is the full score. The score plus the complete parts is available as another item. The individual parts are available as well. The work may be performed as a concert band number, or the orchestration may be used to perform the original ballet. The “stoptime†effects at the end of the piece are especially effective in the version with dancers. Published by Jeff Tyzik/Macaroni Music (A0.1082229). Three Latin Dances was composed for the Eastman Wind Ensemble at the request of Mark Scatterday in September of 2018. In the past twenty years, Mark has been very instrumental in encouraging me to compose wind music. I am grateful for the many wind ensemble projects and recordings we have collaborated on including IMAGES, our CD that was released in October 2018. I've always been attracted to the music of great Latin composers including de Falla, Gimenez, Chapi, Piazzolla, Ginastera, Lacuona and many others. In this short suite, I used three different popular Latin dance forms. The first dance section is based on the Danzón, a Cuban dance that is slow, formal and elegant. The Danzón transitions into a Cha Cha, another Cuban dance that is a medium tempo rhythmic dance that I first experienced during my student days at Eastman when I played in local Latin bands. After a brief recap of the Danzón another transition evolves into a Malambo, an Argentine dance that is exciting, up tempo and whose roots can be traced back to the 1600s. As one might imagine, the percussion section is very busy and featured throughout from the elegant and lyrical introduction to the exciting finish. As an alumni of the EWE under Donald Hunsberger, it is an honor to have this preeminent Eastman ensemble premiere this new suite with Mark Scatterday conducting at Severance Hall in Cleveland on May 7, 2019.

A prolific composer, instrumentalist, teacher and conductor, Johnson led a varied and successful career in an era in U.S. history that was not inviting to black professionals. His musical interests ranged from the contemporary works of Johann Strauss Jr. to traditional, popular dances.The cotillion is a French country dance that was popular in Europe and America in the 18th century. It was originally danced by four couples in square formation and was an important influence in the development of the square dance in the United States. Francis Johnson composed two sets of six piano accompaniments for this dance. The original 1818 publication even included movement instructions for the eight dancers. The short and charming melodies that he composed are a fitting example of popular dance music of the time.This transcription may be performed as a piano solo, with the piano as a non-solistic instrument within the ensemble or without piano at all. If it is to be a piano solo, the other instruments should not play the passages marked “opt. tacet (optional tacet). If the piano will not be treated soloistically, the conductor can have some or all of the “opt. tacet passages played at their discretion. When there is no piano involved in the performance ,all instrumentalists should ignore the “opt. tacet instruction and play everything.

These three pieces (The Procession, Waltzing in the Rain and Tim's Dance) are presented here as a suite, but may of course be used individually. The instrumentation is flexible, allowing for various combinations of instruments, including Clarinet Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble, Saxophone Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble and Brass Quartet/Quintet/Ensemble. All Clarinet and Bass Clarinet parts are below the break and all notes for all parts are kept within a comfortable range for Elementary Level performers. The melody is shared between Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, so that all players of these parts have important parts! The score is shown in concert pitch. Octave displacement occurs in some parts. Part 5 is Optional. Rhythmic values used: semibreve (whole note), dotted minim (dotted half-note), minim (half-note), crotchet (quarter-note), quavers (eighth-notes). Articulations/signs used: staccato, accent, slur, tie, repeat and pause. All three pieces are in Bb major (concert pitch), with no use of accidentals. Themes from the Beach is a multi movement composition released in 2017 that captures wonderful scenes while hanging out on the Beach. The First Movement, Atmospheres, is a beautiful tranquil setting in the key of C major while the beauty portrays the humidity. The Second Movement, is a dance like movement of the scene while people are strolling in Paradise. The Key signature contrast is from D minor to D major and then to D minor once again. The last two movements are in the Key of F major. The third movement displays of what it is like to chill out in the sunlight. This deeply moving ballad is so beautiful and will portray the longest movement of the piece. The last and fourth movement is a 6/8 Dance of getting yourself exposed to the sunlight.Themes from the Beach Suspended Cymbals and Snare Drum Parts. 5 pages long and is listed in the following movements.
