The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow. I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois. The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

In all fields of life, new findings are attained by science and research, more and more can be explained, a well-founded understanding of the things around is going to be achieved. However, the mysterious will still persist. Every new perception leads to further questions, new secrets are rising for being explored. Moreover, someone might perceive that in relation to the entire knowledge gained by mankind, the individual is shrinking. Thus, until the end of time the world will stay mysterious - the world seems to be a persistent secret, that wants to be discovered at all times anew.The musical motif of the Question begins with the very first sound of the piece - a dissonance that is harmoniously resolved again. This motif reflects the curiosity that lies dormant in all people. The dissonance creates a tension that can be seen as an impetus for the search for answers. The resolution to a major chord describes the confidence of being able to find an answer to the question. This musical motif runs through the entire work, both in the dreamy bliss of being and in the dramatic passages in which the flood of questions seems to become frightening. In such sections, the dissonance is turning into a minor chord. At the dramatic climax, a tense dominant seventh chord leads to the resolution to major, which finally describes the euphoria after the answer of a very difficult question. After a further phase of relaxation, the gaze wanders over nature in all its glory. Until towards the end of the piece, the awareness finally sets in that every answer found raises a new question and thus the mystery remains forever.The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.
