From one of the greatest writing duos to ever exist, coupled with one of the greatest RnB bands ever, Got To Get You Into My Life is a toe-tapping tune with catchy melodies and a energetic shuffle feel. For full Wind Band including many of the optional instruments that are often left out (Cor Anglais, Eb Clarinet and Soprano Saxophone), this arrangement features each section of the band on the tune, and really captures the original EWF groove. Jazz articulations and an ability to play the nuances in the tune are important here, so really dig into your bands groovy side to bring out the funk. Pay careful attention to note lengths, especially in the bass line and let your drummer drive the rhythms. However, his body and scope of work extend well beyond the marches which made him so famous. In a rough accounting of Sousa’s body of work, marches make up only the second most numerous of his efforts – some 135 march compositions versus over 320 arrangements and transcriptions for Band. Outside of his marches, most of the Sousa catalog, including his humoresques, remains unpublished and largely unheard today. By way of an old Sousa concert program, we learn the narrative of his humoresque Among My Souvenirs. In it, the Nichols song Among My Souvenirs is lengthened into a sketch. Among his souvenirs is a photograph, letters and a broken heart. As he meditates, he goes back to a time before he was broken-hearted and remembers when he and his beloved were softly singing Twinkling Stars are Laughing, Love. Next, his mind reverts to the time when he was Seeing Her Home, recalling the songs of years gone by at Aunt Dinah’s Quilting Party – he was Seeing Nellie Home. After this, he travels to the Far East, and visions of The Road to Mandalay come to him. From there, he meditates on the Sweet Mysteries of Life and, finally, arrives at the closing picture in which he is once more Among my Souvenirs.

Published by Christian Paulson (A0.1135076). I originally wrote Parker's Lullaby for our orchestra to celebrate the birth of my first grandchild, Parker. Then I wanted to explore the sounds of the concert band with this piece...so away I went. A couple of fun things went into writing this piece originally. It had to be a lullaby, represent the anticipation of her arrival and the peacefulness of her sleeping, while contrasting her whimsical side with her bold and dramatic side. A couple of other things. The chords are rather jazzy because grandpa is a rather jazzy guy. At letter C, the drum part is grandpa being playful while the flute melody is her grandma doing the same. Some say they made art, painting on the walls of the caves. They were the first to question things. I imagine that, with curiosity, they invented faith. They cooked faith with fear to invent courage. I made this piece in 2011 when I started researching new languages ​​for my writing. The previous piece, Eli, Eli, sought to represent a current men walking on their faith, searching for it. Magnon seeks to represent an older man, seeking to give reason to his own fear. The style of musical writing is different from my other works. There are three distinct pieces within this piece, almost like movements, unified by a structure of relationships between notes and use of motifs, although these rarely occur in the same way. I believe Optimism is a truly important view to have on life. Sometimes, you just have to look on the bright side! Unfortunately, there cannot always be happiness. If there was no sadness, you would not recognize or appreciate the happiness. There has to be opposition in order to feel anything. Without sadness and pain there would be no joy and happiness. That's why I wrote this song the way I did. In the beginning, it starts fairly happy and exciting! But then, sadness enters and even a bit of anger. It adds great contrast to the end which feels even more exciting and elated! I hope this song helps you feel optimistic, excited, and happy!

Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,†and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.†♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter†in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter†pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns†“Listen to the Mockingbird†and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?†♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? In the latter two countries, the song was certified platinum and gold, respectively, also doing well across Europe in Finland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Switzerland. The accompanying music video for Get Over You is set in a shopping mall, after hours, on a rainy night, where slowly all the manequins begin to come to life, led by Ellis-Bextor in a wedding dress, eventually eventually causing havoc and smashing glass, even the camera, at the end. This cool chart has a built-in solo section for alto sax, tenor sax or trumpet towards the end, allowing flexibility as needed, with a punchy tag to finish.
