Adopted in 1975, it was written and composed by Thomas Shacklady, a former Royal Marine who took over the band from Inspector David Crawley. I took over the band from 1994-99, after taking the band on two overseas tours to Adelaide in 1996 & Kobe in 1999.The National Identity Act of Papua New Guinea was formulated in 1971, motivating the country to create a national flag, a national emblem, a national pledge and a national anthem. A national flag and emblem were adopted in 1971. However, the national anthem remained undecided until independence from Australia in 1975, four years later. Although many songs were submitted to be the anthem, the National Executive Council decided a week before the country's Independence Day (10 September 1975), to adopt as the national anthem a composition that was composed by Chief Inspector Thomas Shacklady (1917–2006), a bandmaster of the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary Band.During the 2015 Pacific Games opening ceremony, the anthem was sung with the first line altered from O arise all you sons of this land to O arise sons and daughters of this land. An official later stated that this was illegal and a violation of the National Identity Act.

During the 2006-2007 academic year, Nash was fortunate to travel to Ghana, Spain and Vietnam. These experiences were quite profound and resulted in Nash composing new works that reflect those experiences. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE (2009) for symphonic wind ensemble is his first large ensemble composition written under this premise. Kora is a 21 stringed musical instrument from West Africa and KORA'S SONG AND DANCE is largely based on the tune Diabate’ by singer/songwriter Vieux Farke’ Toure’ of Mali. Diabate’ is also the name of well known kora musician, Toumani Diabate’ in which Toure’ dedicated the song to. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE uses melodies that are derived from the drone motif in Toure’s Diabate. Diabate’ is a medium tempo song with the drone motif occurring throughout and improvised melodies on top of the drone. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE begins with a slow introduction, featuring the alto sax and marimba. The rest of the ensemble gradually enters and builds to the end of the intro, transitioning to the next section by way of metric modulation. The next section builds with layers of instrumental textures, much like the intro and concludes with an English horn and piano duet. This particular pattern of musical events repeats, transitioning back to slow music, reminiscent of the intro and then ends big by going back to the faster tempo.

Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment. This two-measure pattern ends differently every other time, creating a four-measure pattern that occurs throughout and never changes! All students (except the shaker) play this pattern at the very beginning, establishing the basis for the entire arrangement.Only six notes are used. Students’ familiarity with the music will be an asset as they tackle a melody that may be a new challenge to them. With this in mind, the melody is always doubled or cued elsewhere; no section will ever have to play it alone. There are four opportunities for either a soloist or a soli of any combination! These occur at bars 21, 25, 49 and 53.  Have fun with these spots, giving everyone an opportunity. It will, of course, need to be mapped out for a performance. Students will shout the Bluey characters’ names just like the show’s theme. There is one spot to insert a name of your choosing - a student, teacher, administrator, family member, or pet! Alternatively, you can replace any of the character’s names to truly personalize the song. I hope you and your students enjoy learning and performing Bluey!

"God Defend New Zealand" was written as a poem in the 1870s by Irish-born, Victorian-raised immigrant Thomas Bracken of Dunedin. A competition to compose music for the poem was held in 1876 by The Saturday Advertiser and judged by three prominent Melbourne musicians, with a prize of ten guineas. The winner of the competition was the Tasmanian-born John Joseph Woods of Lawrence, New Zealand who composed the melody in a single sitting the evening after finding out about the competition. The song was first performed at the Queen?s Theatre, Princes Street, Dunedin, on Christmas Day, 1876. [Wikipedia]

Based off of the composer's imagination and drama added to the music with a mixed of fun sound effects. This might not just be the Christmas song, but another story made up in a song form. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895.
