America’s history is littered with chaotic events, be it school shootings, the attack on the capital, pandemics, 9/11, wars, assassinations, and horrific events yet to come. Through it all, we can feel secure knowing America has, and will, survive. This composition depicts this spirit. It opens with an unusual 4/4 setting of the beginning of “Americaâ€. This is followed by original material that depicts our normal, happy freedom. Suddenly it changes to an aleatoric section representative of a horrific event. Following is a hint of “Amazing Grace†to remember the suffering. As always happens, life returns to normal. Closing is a 4/4 treatment of the final phrase of America, with a hint of the “Star Spangled Bannerâ€. This is an excellent teaching piece for younger bands, as well as a patriotic reminder of America’s strength sure to be an audience favorite.

A French Noël is a setting of the tune accompanying the text Il est né, le divin Enfant, published in Airs des noêl lorrain (1862) and there called Ancien air de chasse (Old hunting air) due to its similarity to an old Normandy hunting tune.Following a short introductory fanfare, the A section of the tune is presented by clarinets and saxophones, handing off to brass and upper woodwinds on the B section. A short transition from the repeat of the A section modulates from the opening key of Bb major to Eb major, with brass then taking up the tune. The American epic war movie, The Longest Day, was released in 1962 and filmed in black and white, It is based on Cornelius Ryan's 1959 non-fiction book of the same name. It is about the D-Day landings at Normandy on June 6, 1944. The picture opens with a view of the beach and the sounds of the waves washing ashore. There is a lone helmet lying upside down on the beach, and over the sounds of the sea, we hear the motif from Beethoven's 5th Symphony, the dot-dot-dash of morse code signaling V, for victory. Throughout the film we hear variations on the theme of the march which culminates in the playing of the full march as the credits roll. Here scored for concert band is the march from The Longest Day, as written by Paul Anka.

The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Published by Kreechur Kumfort Publishing (A0.833833). Storm at King’s Pointe was composed for the Buena Vista Middle School Honor Band at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. Originally planned for February 2017, this event ironically was canceled two years in a row due to severe weather. Located on the eastern edge of Storm Lake is a water park-themed resort called King’s Pointe Resort. This composition depicts a summer storm as it moves over the Iowa hills and across the normally-placid lake. Distant thunder is first heard as dark clouds approach, covering blue Iowa sky. Soon, the drama of drenching rain, powerful wind, and flashes of lightening is represented in an aggressive minor melody. Changes in intensity common to a Midwest storm is reflected within the composition including a quiet respite in the middle and storm-like thunderous percussion breaks. Fully accessible by music ensembles from middle school on up, Storm at King’s Pointe is a nice addition to any concert band program, delighting both players as well as the audience.

Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Old Trace Scherzo is a scherzo with a short dramatic intro. Beyond the intro the rest of the piece keeps the 2-pulse triple feel in 6/8 meter and is in the normal form of a scherzo. The Old Trace was a system of animal paths used by Native Americans. The north end was near Fort Nashborough, TN and the south end was the Mississippi River near Natchez , MS. In the late 18th century, it was overland route between Nashville and the Mississippi River. President Thomas Jefferson improved the Old Trace for use as a postal road. The Old Trace survives today as the Natchez Trace, a 440-mile natinal park from Pasquo, TN to Natchez , MS. Download includes parts for a medium to large band. Baritone TC is included.

In fact, the town of Shenandoah had special police guarding nineteen quarantined houses that included Shenandoah’s mayor and the president of the Page County Board of Health. Also included in this quarantine was the dean of Strong’s College of Music at Dixon, W. F. Strong. Strong, a graduate of the music programs at both the Northern Indiana Normal College (now Valparaiso University) and the Cincinnati College of Music, turned his creative juices to composition and among his prolific output during this period composed the short piece Quarantine Polka. It was published later that year as a part of his Gems of Pleasure series for piano and dedicated to Mae E. Black of Toledo, Ohio. This piece has been placed in a concert band setting but retains the original carefree flavor of Strong’s 1885 composition.
