Concert Band - Level 2 - SKU: A0.513413 By Marcelo Borba. By Marcelo Barros de Borba. Arranged by Marcelo Borba. Country,Latin,Patriotic,Standards,Traditional. Score and Parts. 2 pages. Marcelo Borba #124181. Published by Marcelo Borba (A0.513413). The preciousness of Brazilian music can be appreciated in this arrangement on the Ijexá rhythm. A small 4-bar Looping for percussion practice. In this arrangement the following percussion instruments are used: Agogô, Afoxé, Atabaque and Alfaia. You can listen to the sound result on the audio available for free. Ijexá is available in full version and with its individual parts. The Ijexá rhythm is a musical form originating in Afro-Brazilian culture, specifically within the traditions of the Jeje people from the former Kingdom of Dahomey (now Benin). Also known as Jexá, Jeje, or Ijeji, Ijexá is often associated with Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion. The history of the Ijexá rhythm dates back to the period of slavery in Brazil when Africans of Jeje ethnicity were brought to the country as slaves. They brought with them their culture, religious traditions, and, of course, their musical expressions. Ijexá is one of the musical manifestations of these people, which developed primarily in the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil. The Ijexá rhythm is characterized by a steady beat and a specific rhythmic pattern. It is played in binary meter, with emphasis on the second beat. Instruments used in the execution of Ijexá include atabaques (drums), agogô, xequerê, among others. The lyrics of the songs often address themes related to religion, ancestry, and Afro-Brazilian culture.Over time, Ijexá transcended its original religious context and became incorporated into other Brazilian musical genres, such as popular music, MPB (Música Popular Brasileira), and samba. Its influence can be heard in various compositions, including those by renowned Brazilian artists. The Ijexá rhythm carries a strong cultural and symbolic significance, representing the resistance and preservation of African traditions in Brazil. It is a musical expression that remains alive and present in Brazilian culture, contributing to the diversity and richness of the country's musical heritage.More: https://musicaead.com.br/ijexa-historia-e-cultura-popular/

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.633401 Composed by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik. Film/TV,Jazz,Pop,World. Score and parts. 7 pages. F & N Enterprise #3395675. Published by F & N Enterprise (A0.633401). Background Track for famous Flight Of The Bumble Bee by Nikolai Rimsy-Korsakov for Piano (Jazz/Pop Version). Plus Version at SMP: SO 292873https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GluziM0y9x8The composition is easy to read, fun to play and sound professional when performed. Arranged by Fishel Pustilnik, very well known as Composer/Publisher. His books Jazz & Pop Piano Paradise (Volumes 1-5) have become a commercial success and a hit with music teachers and students in Canada. (Thousands books already sold in Canada). They are also starting to enter the US, Brazil, Norway, Russia, Holland, Israel, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Greece, Latvia and UK markets. This is a wonderful new publication. These pieces offer much appeal for the young pianist and excellent choice for a supplementary book for students from Grade 3 to 8. Lore Ruschiensky, Editor, (from review in The Canadian Music Teacher) Yesterday I spent at least two pleasure filled hours playing through your imaginatively inventive compositions. Congratulations! I trust students will decide to program your well crafted and entertaining works on recitals and examinations. Review from Dr. Jack Behrens, B.Sc. (Julliard), PH.D (Harvard), Director of Academic Studies, The Glenn Gould School I liked this book the best so far. Great work! You have a gift for melody and your arrangements are very playable. Congratulations on the 3rd Volume. Concert Band - Level 3 - SKU: A0.492627 Composed by John R. Daniels. Classical,Standards,Traditional. Score and parts. 49 pages. John R. Daniels #107889. Published by John R. Daniels (A0.492627). In the spirit of Scott Joplin, The Old Warsh Rag is a ragtime piece for concert band. It’s intricate enough to offer a bit of a challenge, yet very playable so that the band enjoys its efforts. There’s a counter melody that is played by itself and then superimposed on the main melody at the end. It’s written for high school concert band or community band; I chose the key so that, even when it gets a bit intricate, it should be easy enough for everyone to play. The title for The Old Warsh Rag is a tribute to the unique way that people speak where I grew up in southwestern Pennsylvania.IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR ENSEMBLE TO GAIN MORE MEDIA EXPOSURE, please record your performance of this piece and email it to CustomMusic@Salt-Cellar-Creations.com. It will be included in my social media postings and website samples with any contact info you may want to provide. If you need help with recording technique or email transfer, etc. please contact me. Concert Band - Level 3 - SKU: A0.983162 Composed by Craig Wadley. Concert,Contemporary,Standards. Score and parts. 102 pages. Wadley Publications #3043809. Published by Wadley Publications (A0.983162). The Privateers is a swashbuckling depiction of an oceangoing pirate adventure, presented in the form of a march. The piece starts with a brief fanfare, followed immediately by a rousing melody in the style of an old sea-shanty. Images of sailing upon an endless sea of stars come to mind as a tranquil nocturne is presented, but the peace is shattered as cutlasses and sabers clash in a dogfight sure to end in Davy Jones’ locker! The music swells to a dramatic conclusion as our mighty galleon surges across a stormy sea. Instrumentation The Privateers comes with full sets of both concert/stage and marching/field parts, allowing for great flexibility in your performance venues. Contemporary marching bands and drum & bugle corps utilize specialized field percussion which is typically not used in a concert setting. With this piece, the use of outdoor percussion (quad toms and a tonal bass drum line) onstage is encouraged, although not required. A single bass drum line is included which may be used instead of (or in addition to) the tonal bass drum line, and the Quad Toms part may be omitted. A piano part is included, primarily for optional use indoors as a color instrument for the ensemble. However, smaller bands in particular may find it useful for filling out the accompaniment line if instrumentation is limited. Optionally, a very small ensemble of melodic instruments could be used, with the piano acting as a full-fledged accompaniment. Several optional parts are included, such as Eb and Bb Horn, for ensembles with limited instrumentation. Also, the two Low Winds parts should be distributed equally across trombone, baritone/euphonium, and tenor sax players. Double reed parts are not included. Double these instruments on appropriate parts to suit the needs of your ensemble. Teaching Points Meter – The alternation of 6/8 and 4/4 with a constant pulse (rather than a constant 8th note) provides an excellent opportunity to teach your students to shift the subdivision of the beat from triple to duple and back again. Chromaticism & Accidentals – There is a recurring passage which features the prominent use of secondary dominants, or circle of fifths chord motion. Students can learn a few less-than-common accidentals and enharmonics, while also getting a larger lesson in music theory.

Concert Band - Level 3 - SKU: A0.549215 Composed by Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Renaissance,Standards. Score and Parts. 47 pages. Jmsgu3 #3467666. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549215). A musical monument: the first known composition in history to employ dynamics. Instrumentation: Medium-sized Concert Band. 1 PiccoloAt least 2 flutes, clarinets, alto & tenor saxesAt least 1 bass clarinetAt least  2 trumpets, horns, trombones & tubas4 timpaniScore: 20 pg. 81 measures. Duration: 3:45 at half-note = 86. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and certainly instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and likewise reverberation for maximum effect. Seems like Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was rather the first to indicate them such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. Consequently, he was also a pioneer in spatial techniques. He, therefore, developed and used very specific notation to indicate instrumentation. Gabrieli experimented with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. In this way, he consequently contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style. Polychoral Works Gabrieli probably used the layout of the San Marco church for his experiments. This is because he worked there as a musician and composer. Furthermore, the church had two choir lofts facing each other. He certainly used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Certainly, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, then consequently followed by a response from the group on the other side. Sometimes there was probably a third group positioned near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather than two groups. The instruments, because they could be appropriately situated, could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper, can in contrast sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets along with his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Seems like Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material, but developing it through sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, here the instruments are certainly an essential part of the presentation. Also, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – which calls Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo. Â

Published by Yellow Envelope Publications (A0.1272809). Though “The Veil Between†starts slow and ominous, it quickly picks up the tempo with a driving bass line and melody that pushes throughout the piece. The middle section is filled with creepy percussion instruments, including bowed cymbals and super ball mallets on gongs and timpani. Your percussionists are sure to enjoy trying out these cool sounds.Every person on a melodic instrument gets the melody at some point in the piece. I just liked the idea of someone starting to play the melody as people were getting ready for rehearsal and anyone else being able to join in! Plus, I thought it might make it easier to teach the style of the melody if you could do it as a full group. This piece was originally written for 5 percussionists. After finishing the piece I was asked to add in more percussion, a task which I was very excited to do! The benefit of this is that this piece can be played by as few as 5 percussionists, or as many as 10 (or more)! InstrumentationFlute, Oboe, Bassoon, 2 Clarinet, Bass Clarinet,Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, 2 Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Euphonium, Treble Clef Euphonium, Tuba5-10 Percussionists - Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Concert Toms (2), Opt. The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? Commissioned by the International School Of Luxembourg (ISL). Premiered in Luxembourg, in December 2010, conducted by Dimosthenis Dimitrakoulakos.Program Notes:This piece is named for Yemanya (pronounced Yeh-MAHN-jah or Yeh-MAHN-jee), the Brazilian/African nurturing mother goddess of the ocean. She's known as a protector, supplier, and one who grants wishes. Every December 31st, Brazilians celebrate Yemanya by casting white flowers and miniature boats into the sea. If Yemanya grants your wish, her waves will swallow the boat and if she denies the wish the boat will wash up on shore. Yemanya teaches us to dive in at the very moment of golden opportunity, to enjoy the rhythms of life, and to allow all doubts to be washed away. The fluid, oceanic themes of the instruments represent the flow of the water and magic of Yemanya. The piece starts off with a soft wind chime accompanied by gong/tam-tam. Then the vibraphone enters mysteriously as the main theme that drives the whole piece as it subtly changes. The double bass creates a rhythmic pulse beneath the other sections. The gentle melodies in the flute dance around jazzy articulations in the trumpets and saxophones. There's an interplay of Afro-Cuban beats in the marimba and a bossa nova rhythm between the temple blocks and xylophone. Throughout the piece I have tried to capture the water's motion and the ever-changing face of the sea. As the vibraphone returns to the original melody, we are reminded of Yemanya's eternal beauty and peaceful nature.

Concert Band - Level 2 - SKU: A0.549200 Composed by Giovanni Gabrieli. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Easter,Renaissance,Standards. 27 pages. Jmsgu3 #3458689. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549200). Giovanni Gabrieli: Jubilate Deo (Ch. 136). Instrumentation: small concert band, no percussion. Here is a stunningly beautiful example of Renaissance polyphony and a mesmerizing fast-paced recital number. Program this initially to set an exciting mood or as an encore to leave the listeners in a jubilant afterglow. The parts are not tricky, but plan to rehearse the many subtleties of dynamic contrast between the various sub-groups and the overall articulations. Innovations First of all, Gabrieli preferred sacred vocal and, indeed, instrumental music. Hence, he concentrated on music that consequently took advantage of resonance and reverberation for maximum effect. Gabrieli may have invented dynamics – or was the first to indicate them, such as in his Sonata Pian’ e Forte. He indeed used these to create striking spatial effects between instrumental forces. Indeed, many of his works are composed such that a choir or instrumental group could first be heard on one side, followed by a group response. Sometimes there was probably a third group near the main altar as well. Spatial Music Above all, Gabrieli studied carefully detailed groups of instruments and singers. Furthermore, it seems like he created precise directions for instrumentation in rather more than two groups. Because they could be appropriately situated, the instruments could consequently be heard with perfect clearness at distant locations. As a result, arrangements that seem bizarre on paper can, in contrast, sound perfectly in balance. First Works Finally, Gabrieli published his first motets and his uncle Andrea's compositions in Concerti (1587). These compositions furthermore indicate considerable usage of dialogue and echo effects. Consequently, here we see low and high choirs with the variance between their ranges indicated by instrumental accompaniment. Gabrieli’s later motets Sacrae Symphoniae (1597) seem to move away from close antiphony. In contrast, he moves towards not simply echoing the material but developing it by sequential choral entrances. Even more, he takes this procedure to the extreme in the Motet Omnes Gentes. Unlike earlier works, the instruments are an essential part of the presentation, only parts marked: Capella are supposed to be sung. Homophony Hence, after 1605, Gabrieli moves to a much more homophonic style. He writes sections purely for instruments – called Sinfonia – and smaller sections for vocal soloists, accompanied by a basso continuo.

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1292690 Composed by Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 19th Century,20th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Score and Parts. 160 pages. John Ivor Holland #883252. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1292690). This bombastic Concerto by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was composed in 1877 whilst still a serving naval officer, for fellow marine musician; it was premiered in March 1878 at Kronstadt, with the international premiere not taking place until the summer of 1952 in New York City. The work consists of three short movements, the second and third including cadenza sections for the soloist. The duration of the Concerto stands at around 10 minutes. Although written for the tenor trombone, the Concerto is standard repertoire amongst bass trombonists, as the composer makes few demands on the very high register of the instrument. Indeed, in common with solo trombone works of the period, the Concerto encompasses the full downward range of the instrument, including in the 3rd movement cadenza notes that are so low as to be usually unobtainable (and therefore played up an octave) by latter-day tenor trombonists. This arrangement has been rescored from the condensed piano arrangement for modern day concert band.

The final movement of the 'Peebles Beltane Festival Suite' is rousing quick march, based upon the traditional Beltane Festal Song theme from the small town of Peebles in the Scottish Borders. The Beltane Fetstival which is celebrated every year has been going for almost 200 years. The words to the traditional festal song are:At Beltane in the aulden time, it was the custom gay, To gather on the village green and hail the festal day, Huntsman gallant and sheperds grey, dought and blythsome men, And Lassies blooming fresh and fair cam liltin’ doon the glen, Through the greenwood haste away,... Sing aloud the festal lay, Busk the the Beltane banner gay, to Peblis and the play. Auld Neidpath, grim and grey wi’ years, looks doon wi war-scarred face, And sentinels our royal toun wi’ majesty and grace, Loyal sons of a fearless race, gather we here today,And sing the auld-warld round-e-lay of ‘Peblis to the Play’, Wave the Beltane banner high, Ring the anthem to the sky, While our silver stream rolls by, The Tweeddale glen for aye.Across the wild foam-crested wave, in distant lands of fame, The exile oft wi’ pride recalls the dear auld Border hame, And while we crown our Beltane queen, ‘mid flaming skies of June, We pledge the leal hearts far a-wa and lilt our festal tune, Honour is our watchword clear, Truth our dauntless halberdier,Liberty’s our heralds cheer, Long live our Beltane Queen.

Published by John McAllister (A0.1284242). Mythos Unleashed is a musical odyssey that captures the enigmatic allure and captivating exploits of legendary heroes. The opening employs idiomatic chords, melodies, and motives to create a truly “cinematic†atmosphere that draws listeners in from the very first note. Then the piece “unleashes†and burns forward with passion and intrigue, with every section getting a moment to play melodic material. This thrilling addition to any concert program is the perfect opportunity for students to transport their audience on a magical journey back in time to the era of ancient heroes. This piece directly correlates with the Foundation Warm-Up Series. This series is designed to follow most beginning band methods. The early sets focus primarily on airflow, common patterns, and reinforcing concepts presented in the method books. As the series develops, the sets become more like a traditional band warm-up, including long tones, flexibility exercises, articulation, scale patterns, and a chorale.

It was commissioned by Dr. Kristen Tjornehoj, Conductor of the University of Wisconsin at River Falls Symphony Band in remembrance of Kaye Bird, who passed away in 2016 as a resident of River Falls and a member of the community for several years. Kaye Bird was also a resident of Indiana, PA for 37 years and was a well respected teacher in the public schools there. Set Free to go Home was premiered by the Indiana University of Pennsylvania Symphony Band at Fisher Auditorium on February 6, 2020, conducted by Dr. Jason Worzbyt. It is agrade 3 band piece with a duration of five minutes. It is published by Musica Nova USA and availableon sheetmusicplus.com and jwpepper.com.Performance Notes: Set Free to go Home was composed with flexible instrumentation in mind. There are several instruments listed in the score that would enhance the piece (such as harp, oboes, double bass, ect.) but are not necessary to convey a successful performance. For example, if there are not five percussionists available, the piece may be played by less performers with the use of a drumkit, with one person playing two or more parts. This composition can sound very good whether thereare fifteen players or a band with one hundred players.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917410). Sinfonietta (alternate title SinfonÃa de Vino y Aceite de Magallon) is a composition for concert band that can be played by any band whether it has 100 players or 30 players. It is at grade 3 level of difficulty and has several substitute parts for ensembles that may not have complete instrumentation. Although the scoring includes piccolo, oboes, bassoons, and French horns, these instruments are not needed to command a good performance.Sinfonietta adheres to classical forms of symphonies by composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The forms are very clear so the players of the band can learn this important history. The first movement is in standard Sonata Allegro form. The second movement is in A B A form and features a solo trumpet. The third movementis in a Rondo form (A B A C A) with three distinct themes. The work was commissioned in 2017 by the town of Magallón, Spain in celebration of the town’s industries of wine and olive oil. The mayor of the town of 1,000 inhabitants, Victor Manuel Chueca Rodriguez, was specific in his request for a composition at grade 3 level of difficulty. He also suggested the title as Symphony. Since it a three-movement composition instead of a four-movement composition (the normal Minuet and Trio movement is not included in this piece), the title of Sinfonietta instead of Symphony is used.Gregory Fritzeis a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1404055). 'Street Player' is the opening track on Chicago 13, the eleventh studio album by American rock band Chicago, released on August 13, 1979, by Columbia Records. The song is a cover, having previously been performed by Rufus and didn't chart very highly, although the album eventually was certified Gold. It is primarily known as being sampled for the 1995 hit The Bomb! (These Sounds Fall into My Mind) by The Bucketheads, the 2009 hit I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho) by Pitbull and the 2013 remix by dance music producer Tradelove. The original recording featured a long trumpet solo by Maynard Ferguson; this arrangement, however, has been shortened, although still packing a punch with its distinctive brass lines - it should still be accessible to most bands with some careful rehearsal to get the rhythms together and should be a sure-fire hit with your audience.

The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Enjoy!!
