Variations on a Canarian Hymn grade 4, duration 11:00 was commissioned and composed for the Banda Muncipal of Tenerife, Spain, Filipe Neri, conductor. They premiered it on June 25, 2017. The American premiere was March 21, 2019 by the University of Wisconsin River Falls Symphony Band, Kristin Tjornehoj, Conductor.The Canary Islands is a region of Spain. The anthem used in the Canaries for local official occasions is an adaptation of a local folk song called Arrorró (Lullaby) by Teobaldo Power (1848 – 1884). Tenerife is the largest and most populated island of the seven Canary Islands. Tenerife has a special relation to Columbus and the New World as he first stopped in Tenerife on each of his passages before sailing to the New World. There is a plaque in the center of Tenerife city depicting this.Variations on a Canarian Hymnis in the classictheme and variations form, startingwith a presentation of the folk song in its entirety, then following with six variations of the folk song. Each variation displays different colors and moods of the symphonic band. The triumphal ending depicts the strength of the Canarian people. The piece features several instruments, some with extended solos including: flute, oboe, alto saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, English horn and timpani. There are several cues in the parts to cover certain instruments that may not be available, such as English horn.

Well here it is and it's every young band's favorite. As I laid in bed recuperating from a triple bypass the theme for this tune came to mind. I concluded that ‘Stompin At The Bypass’ would be an appropriate title. That is exactly what your audience will be doing after your band performs this number… stomping their feet to the beat and humming the tune on the way out the door. A real crowd pleaser and guaranteed to get your band a standing ovation every time. It's amazing how good this easy, well written piece will make your beginning band sound. Perfect instrument ranges and lack of technical difficulties make it a winner. Complete with full score and parts for flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto and tenor sax, f horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, bells and percussion. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed. If you are I'll volunteer for another bypass.

One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts). It also encourages students to develop improvisation skills by providing soloing opportunities within all parts, with suggested pitches for improvising. Each piece has five different parts which are split into four ability levels as follows: A – Range of about 5 notes, easy rhythms. B – Range of about 1 octave, basic rhythms. C – Range of about a 12th, some more difficult rhythms. D – Range of about 2 octaves, some rhythmic complexity. This enables the teacher to select parts which are suitable for the standard of individual players in the group. As a general rule, the pieces have been composed as follows: Part 1 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 2) Part 2 – melody / countermelody (alternates with Part 1) Part 3 – accompaniment (synchronises with Part 4) Part 4 –accompaniment (synchronises with Part 3) Part 5 – bass line (independent) Each part also comes in a wide array of transpositions, clefs and pitches. Hence, almost any combination of instruments can play together in an ensemble of mixed abilities,including: Flutes, clarinets, saxophones, mixed woodwind, trumpets, mixed brass (including brass band), violins, strings, keyboards/pianos, tuned percussion. An ensemble using any combination of instruments (as is often found within schools) will work effectively as well. Example: A quintet might be selected as follows: 1A (violin), 2C(trumpet), 3B (clarinet), 4B (tenor sax), 5D (trombone) The melody in 1A would be very simple but would contrast nicely when passed to the more difficult 2C. Parts 3B and 4B will have quite a simple accompaniment between them, whilst the bass line on 5D will be more complex and rhythmically interesting. Parts can obviously be doubled up as well beyond five players. Please note that the teacher of the ensemble should be careful to pick parts which are well-suited to the players’ abilities. IT'S TIME FOR REGGAE is the third piece in this series, and has typical characteristics of the style, including the off-beat rhythm in parts 3 and 4, and the bass line which becomes more fluid in the more difficult part 5s. You could also have a drummer play an authentic 'one-drop' rhythm with the kick and side-stick both on 2 and 4. Seth Almond had the honor of serving with Jordan in the Quantico Marine Corps Band in Quantico, VA. After serving four years in the Marine Corps, Jordan Snow enlisted into the Vermont National Guard as a member of the 40th Army Band. In the summer of 2021, Jordan passed and it was a total shock to have lost such a joyful soul, great husband, Marine, and friend. The artwork on the front cover (of unknown origin) is one that is full of imagery that covers all aspects of the services, Army and Navy and is full of patriotic and familial ideals. The border lists all of the US States and the corner pictures depict aspects of homecoming. The main image is a parade of victory. Let's let Paull explain it all to us as he did on the inside cover. Why This Piece Of Music Was Named The Home Coming March Explanatory When the author had about completed the music of the present march, it occurred to him that it might be well to have suggestions made from a number of people, recommending a good name for same, for after all there is considerable in a name. He, therefore, had a special advertisement placed in several of the leading music Journals throughout the country, offering a prize of $10.00 in gold to anyone suggesting a name that would be accepted. Over three thousand names were sent in from all parts of the country, even from far away New Zealand and Australia, in which countries the author's marches are universal favorites. Included in the letters received was one from Mr. W. C. Bates, Secretary of the Sheffield Advertising Agency of New York and Chicago, in which he suggested the name The Home Coming March. After due consideration, this name was accepted, and the prize was awarded and paid to Mr. Bates, who stated that he was prompted to recommend this name on account of having been present during the impressive celebration of Old Home Week in Boston, Mass., last year. Probably no one idea is so universally dominant in the mind of the Human Race as that of home, or matters pertaining to home. The author believes that the name selected is one that will appeal to everyone; as the many pleasant associations with the words Home Coming are almost without limit. The title page of this march is without any exception the handsomest seen on a piece of music. The main body of the title pace represents a street scene, with buildings decorated and shows a handsome royal Arch of Welcome in the foreground, gaily decorated with flags, emblems, and bunting. A band is shown passing under the arch, leading a procession of the Home Guard, and thousands of people waving handkerchiefs, banners, flags, etc. Four smaller scenes also appear on the page, one representing the Home Coming of the soldier from war; another scene shows the Home Coming of the sailor boys embarking from their battleships; another scene represents the Home Coming reunion of the family and loved ones; the fourth scene represents the Home Coming of the father from work, where a little tot has been watching and waiting, and runs to meet him. The whole design of the title page is then surrounded by a border of differently designed medallions, on which appears the names of all the States of the Union, making without a doubt, the most unique and attractive title page ever conceived for a piece of music. One thing Paull mastered early in his career was the art of overstatement! Musically, this march is beginning to show the repetitiveness of many of Paull's works, especially evident as time passed. Once Paull found the formula (a fabulous cover and a playable, rousing march) that sold music, he stuck with it and was quite successful as a result.This arrangement is for Full Concert Band with the original optional piano part ( Not on the score). Not overly difficult but players should be around Grade 5 (ABRSM) and intermediate level concert bands, school bands and symphonic wind ensembles should manage it easily. Inspired by an old ruined church in my town called the 'Cross Kirk' during the times of the Cromwellian invasion of Scotland.Part 1 It is around the year 1650. A novice monk awakes from his slumber to the echoes of prayers and holy chanting coming through the cloisters. After he rises, he readies the oxen for a trek down the St. Andrews Road to the nearby satellite site of the priory - the site of the modern day St Andrew's cemetery.Part 2 It is an arduous trek over a muddy, rocky, unprepared track with heavy carts, with oxen straining to pull the load. They stop for a breather (3:09) and the impressive vistas are observed and the flag at 'Auld Neidpath' is just visible, reflected in the noble theme between the arduous oxen trekking theme.Part 3 The caravan starts to speed up; the oxen being startled by the sounds of fanfare trumpets coming from behind - a brave group of knights have broken through English lines and speed towards Neidpath to reinforce the besieged occupants. As they pass the wagon train, the fanfares get louder until the party reach the head of the train where the lead Knight halts to show piety to the Hieromonk who blesses him and his knights. The novice looks on awe-inspired at the brave knights, with noble faces, resplendent in shining armour, with banners flapping in the wind. No time to stop! The knights remount and continue on, the fanfares trailing off into the distance. The wagon train slows down having reached its destination.Part 4 The novice is back at the priory, reflecting on seeing knights for the first time (receiving their blessing); their nobility and bravery impressed upon him and retires to his cell for the evening, the evening prayers and chants again echoing through the cloisters . As he closes his eyes, his mind returns to the knights and a smile crosses his face as he gently drifts off to sleep, as the final bell of the day tolls.

In the book of Matthew, chapter 27:1-10, Judas returns the blood money and hangs himself; the chief priests used the money and bought the Potter's field which became known as the Field of Blood, a burial place for strangers. This elegy for Judas is the haunting memoir of a traitor.Elegy is a piece just shy of seven minutes whose challenge is not in technical facility but rather in musical nuance. It gives many instruments opportunities to shine individually and in chamber-like settings, and it also challenges players to listen to the musical interactions in the fuller sections. Several specialty instruments are marked ad. lib., such as Eb clarinet, English horn, contrabassoon, double bass, and while they are optional, they sometimes do have prominent parts (especially English horn), but all optional instruments are either doubled or marked for cues when featured [NOTE: For ease of score reading, cues are not written out in the score; they are only cited on the appropriate lines]. So their presence is useful, but their absence is not prohibitive. Also, the score calls for some challenging ranges in the first horn, first bassoon and first/second trombones. These passages are marked with optional 8vb's, and the first bassoon and trombone have the opportunity to play a short passage in tenor clef. The timpani part includes suggested drum tunings, and it gives ample time and direction for the few pitch changes are required. The vibraphone part (Perc. 1) does employ four-mallet technique in places, but if this is not feasible (this would be a good piece in which to start learning it), the score specifies that Perc. 1 may be played on a piano instead. Percussion 3 calls for crotales, but in their absence, the glockenspiel may be used, and Perc. 3 already has that. The optional double bass part makes use of notes requiring a C extension, but it also gives optional small notes an octave higher in case the bassist has no C extension (which is likely). So in all, this piece offers plenty of challenges, but it also comes with optional escapes to help make it more accessible to more bands.Elegy-Field of Blood will challenge the musicality of good high school and college bands while still being a respectable member of professional repertoire. Its major performance challenges can be circumvented without terribly compromising the musicality, but they are available for maximum musical impact.

It was partly inspired by the Beatles' song The Inner Light, written by George Harrison and based on verses in the Tao Te Ching. In this episode, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is struck unconscious by an energy beam from an alien probe. While minutes pass for the rest of the crew, the probe makes Picard experience 40 years of lifetime as Kamin, a humanoid scientist whose planet is threatened by the nova of its sun. The probe is later found to contain a flute, which Picard keeps as a memento for the remainder of the series and in Star Trek: Picard. The flute melody, featured prominently in the episode, was composed by Jay Chattaway and has since been re-arranged for a full orchestra. Israel'sdeliverer is near, proclaiming peace, bearing good news, announcing salvation, leadingIsrael back to Jerusalem. The New Testament likewise speaks of deliverance frombondage – bondage from sin, and healing of the breach between God and humanity. It isthrough the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus that this deliverance isaccomplished. In both cases, there is cause for great joy.Musically, movement from the more subdued preface (part 1) to the festive Latin groove(part 2) conveys the transition from journey to jubilation.The present rendition, written for SATB choir and piano with optional flute and oboemarks the latest evolution in the work's arrangement history. The originalaccompaniment included guitar, bass, drum, flute and electric violin. However, in 2009,through a collaboration with bassist/arranger, Perry Orfanella, a full orchestral score wasdeveloped. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. The famous Corta-jaca, the name with which the tango Gaúcho became popular, is one of Chiquinha Gonzaga's most recorded and best-known songs, along with Ó abre alas, Lua branca, and Atraente. It was born on the stages of musical theaters, where it was danced in the final scene of the burlesque operetta of national costumes Zizinha Maxixe, imitated from French by an anonymous author, performed at the Teatro Éden Lavradio, in August 1895. Actor Machado Careca (José Machado Pinheiro e Costa), the anonymous author of the play, ended up putting verses to the music of Corta-jaca, helping to popularize it, especially after his version was recorded on disc by the duo Os Geraldos. Throughout history, Corta-jaca frequented other stages and repertoires: café-cantante, chope-berrante, rodas de choro... But it was at the Palácio do Catete, in 1914, that it achieved its glory. Performed on the guitar by first lady Nair de Teffé, it caused political scandal and ended up nicknaming the administration of Hermes da Fonseca. The reaction can be measured by the impassioned speech that Senator Rui Barbosa made from the rostrum. When asked what was the corta-jaca he had heard so much about, he concluded: The lowest, the most vulgar, the rudest of all wild dances, the twin sister of batuque, cateretê and samba. But at presidential receptions the corta-jaca is performed with all the honors of Wagner's music, and one does not want the conscience of this country to revolt, our faces to blush and the youth to laugh! Never before in the history of Brazil had eminently popular music been performed at the seat of government, in front of the diplomatic corps and the country's elite. Corta-jaca has become a classic of the great repertoire of Brazilian instrumental music, meriting recordings by, among others, Abel Ferreira, Altamiro Carrilho, Antonio Adolfo, Artur Moreira Lima, Clara Sverner, Conjunto Regional do Donga, Eudóxia de Barros, Guio de Morais, Itamar Assieré, Leandro Braga, Marcus Viana, Maria Teresa Madeira, Marcelo Verzoni, Paulo Moura, Radamés Gnatalli, Rosária Gatti, Talitha Peres, TurÃbio Santos, countless bands, and some sung versions. It was written by the maestro also for singing and piano and small orchestra: oboe, viola, timpani, horns (bass), bassoon.

What an incredible journey for these great words: an ancient poem that has its roots in the Qur'an, later adapted by a Rabbi, written on the wall of an insane asylum by a patient, and finally taken up by a Christian to be the basis of a beautiful song. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733069). Tchaikovsky referred to the piece as his Serbo-Russian March while writing it. It was premiered in Moscow on November 17 1876, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein. The march is highly programmatic in its form and organization. The first section describes the oppression of the Serbs by the Turkish. It uses two Serbian folk songs, Sunce jarko, ne sijaš jednako (Bright sun, you do not shine equally), by Isidor Ćirić and Rado ide Srbin u vojnike (Gladly does the Serb become a soldier), by Josip Runjanin - giving way to the second section in the relative major key, which describes the Russians rallying to help the Serbs. This is based on a simple melody with the character of a rustic dance which is passed around the orchestra until finally it gives way to a solemn statement of the Russian national anthem God Save the Tsar. The third section of the piece is a repeat of Tchaikovsky's furious orchestral climax, reiterating the Serbian cry for help. The final section describes the Russian volunteers marching to assist the Serbs. It uses a Russian tune, this time in the tonic major key and includes another blazing rendition of God Save the Tsar prophesying the triumph of the Slavonic people over tyranny. The overture finishes with a virtuoso coda for the full orchestra. The piece shares a few refrains with the 1812 Overture, with which it is frequently paired in performance. This is the Tsarist (i.e., non-Soviet) Version.
