BJE Music #3872321. Published by BJE Music (A0.750841). Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty is a music hall song written by Arthur J. Mills, Fred Godfrey and Bennett Scott in 1916. It was popular during the First World War and tells a story of three fictional soldiers on the Western Front suffering from homesickness and their longing to return to Blighty - a slang term for Britain.Fred Godfrey wrote the song with Bennett Scott and A.J. Mills after passing a music hall in Oxford where a show called Blighty was showing. He recounts: One of us suddenly said What an idea for a song! Four hours later it was all finished, and the whole country was singing it soon afterwards. I got - not very much.The chorus lyric Take me back to dear old Blighty/Put me on a train to London town was included in The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations. The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? I spent many happy days sailing the Severn River (where the Navy Academy is located by the Chesapeake Bay). The piece begins with the launch of the boat in a calm inlet, followed by the sudden catch of the wind in the sails - tacking from one side of the river to the other. The exhilarating ride is then interrupted by a storm, followed by the Navy Hymn (homage to when a navy yawl rescued me in a storm). The piece ends with a procession of the beautiful genoa jib catching the wind on the return home, with a recap of the calm waters of the inlet. Enjoy Sailing the Severn!

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869220). Program note. Concerto for Concert Band is in four movements, played without pause. The first movement begins with a percussion fanfare that leads into woodwind melodies coupled with the euphonium. Then the percussion takes over again, with a timpani solo feature. The second movement is a dialogue between the clarinet and brass choirs. As the choir masses become more dense, a plaintive solo oboe emerges from the din … molto cantabile!!! The third movement is a scherzo featuring the trumpets and the woodwinds. The percussion section joins in with outbursts and commentaries … The brass choir returns in the last movement with more melodies emanating from the woodwinds. The work ends in quiet tranquility … molto cantabile again!!! The work is dedicated to the effervescent Bill Drury who conducts the wind ensembles at the New England Conservatory of Music. I was very grateful to Bill when he asked me to write something for him and the Jordan Winds at NEC. It is a huge challenge to compose music for large wind groups. I find most concert band pieces too thick and mucky in texture. The trick is to create concert band music that is light and transparent; to orchestrate in such a way that you can see/hear light seeping through. I hope I was able to do that. Enjoy!!
