One of our favorite songs that he sang was TheFar North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of hermovies. Years later I transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell methey recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch'ssong. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes inthe border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada.The original arrangement, for string quartet, was premiered by the OdeonQuartet on October 21, 2003, at Seattle's TownHall.

Admittedly, the choice of title for this work for novice wind ensemble was based more on what would rhyme with the word ‘Tumbarumba’, than staying true to the style of the North American Latin groove made popular in the 1930s! It does; however, introduce players to some of the musical aspects found in Latin American and Afro-Cuban music in an accessible way. Written for and premiered by the Sturt Public School Band (near the town of Tumbarumba) this fun work utilises narrow instrumental tessituras, and incorporates simple off off-beat entries, section solis, layered melodies, and a fun bass line that will keep your low woodwind and brass players engaged and audience tapping their feet all the way through! The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise.The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

'The City of Manaus' incorporates various musical elements such as multimetre time signatures and vast tambral exploration to represent a chase through the Amazon Jungle. The driving pulse, short note lengths and quick tempo reflect an action-packed chase. This climaxes before a reduction in texture - exploring of the tone colours of the woodwinds, and brass, representative of the birds and pristine environment of the natural world. The tension then grows as the texture thickens before the chase resumes, racing once again through the jungle. The 'City of Manaus' is located deep within the Amazon in Northern Brazil. The actual town was founded in 1693 but the history of colonisation of the area begun in 1499 after the Spanish discovered the mouth of the Amazon River. Being the largest city in the Amazon, Manaus is the centre of life in the region, and the namesake of this piece arises from the way this city seems to be the beacon of humanity in a totally natural landscape. Written for Concert Band, this piece is one which takes the listener on a journey to the depths of the Amazon rainforest to find the 'City of Manaus'. It is suitable for Highschool aged students and professional groups alike and can be performed with flexible instrumentation due to doubling in numerous parts. Grade 2.5-3.

The programme made its debut on the CBS television network in December 1965. In the special, Charlie Brown finds himself depressed despite the onset of the cheerful holiday season. After Lucy van Pelt suggests he direct a neighbourhood Christmas play, his best efforts are ignored and mocked by his peers when he chooses a puny Christmas tree as a centrepiece. 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' received high ratings and acclaim from critics, receiving an Emmy and a Peabody Award, and becoming a staple in the Christmas television schedule for nearly 60 years.
