Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733069). Tchaikovsky referred to the piece as his Serbo-Russian March while writing it. It was premiered in Moscow on November 17 1876, conducted by Nikolai Rubinstein. The march is highly programmatic in its form and organization. The first section describes the oppression of the Serbs by the Turkish. It uses two Serbian folk songs, Sunce jarko, ne sijaš jednako (Bright sun, you do not shine equally), by Isidor Ćirić and Rado ide Srbin u vojnike (Gladly does the Serb become a soldier), by Josip Runjanin - giving way to the second section in the relative major key, which describes the Russians rallying to help the Serbs. This is based on a simple melody with the character of a rustic dance which is passed around the orchestra until finally it gives way to a solemn statement of the Russian national anthem God Save the Tsar. The third section of the piece is a repeat of Tchaikovsky's furious orchestral climax, reiterating the Serbian cry for help. The final section describes the Russian volunteers marching to assist the Serbs. It uses a Russian tune, this time in the tonic major key and includes another blazing rendition of God Save the Tsar prophesying the triumph of the Slavonic people over tyranny. The overture finishes with a virtuoso coda for the full orchestra. The piece shares a few refrains with the 1812 Overture, with which it is frequently paired in performance. This is the Tsarist (i.e., non-Soviet) Version.

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Requested by his cousin, Andrey Tchaikovsky, this march was written in the Spring of 1893 for the 98th Yurevsky Infantry Regiment, for which Andrey was the commander. Pyotr Tchaikovsky never actually orchestrated this arrangement because he did not know the instrumentation of the group that would be playing it, so instead it was written for solo piano and orchestrated later. This piece captures the spirit of an Imperial Russian March and you can sense the pride the soldiers must have felt when this regiment played their very own march. Includes supplemental parts for piano, guitar, harp and drum set.

Starting quietly, the sound slowly grows to a strong B section, then marches away into the distance. This G-minor work is ideal for any concert or festival. DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Medium Easy / Grade 2 / suitable for middle school or small high school bands FEATURES: - All winds (including tuba!) have melody at least once. - Simple trombone parts (generously cross-cued in Horn, Euphonium) - 2nd Clarinet remains below break. At the age of 20 he became an instrumentalist in the Leibgrenadier Regiment 8 in Frankfurt an der Oder and in 1843 he became the band's conductor. In 1865 he became the director of all Bands of the Königlich-Preußische III: Armee-Korps. Preussens Gloria is possibly the best known of his 60 marches. The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. Recorded for Columbia Records in 1960, it features jazz interpretations of nine movements from the original work in various styles and in a slightly different order, including more exotic instruments than would normally be found in the jazz ensemble:Overture Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes)Peanut Brittle Brigade (March)Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)Entr'acteVolga Vouty (Russian Dance)Chinoiserie (Chinese Dance)Dance of the Floreadores (Waltz of the Flowers)Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)Now fully arranged for concert band, without piano (as Ellington didn't actually play very much on the original recording) this is a difficult work, but players and audiences will love it - starring roles are given to most of the band at various points and the original solos played by the Ellington orchestra have been included for authenticity but chords added as well, should your players wish to make their own music. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. On one of the shows, the celebrity guest was ballet star Doreen Wells who asked if she could dance to music of the Beatles. It fell to Wilkinson to arrange some of the hit songs for use by a ballerina. He hit on the idea of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite as a model; it was so popular that further movements were added for an EP recording and the complete Beatlecracker Suite is the result. The EP was issued throughout the world and was to be followed by an album if it did well enough, but it appears there was none. The movements are:1. Miniature Overture (Help!)2. March (When I'm 64)3.
