This two-measure pattern ends differently every other time, creating a four-measure pattern that occurs throughout and never changes! All students (except the shaker) play this pattern at the very beginning, establishing the basis for the entire arrangement.Only six notes are used. Students’ familiarity with the music will be an asset as they tackle a melody that may be a new challenge to them. With this in mind, the melody is always doubled or cued elsewhere; no section will ever have to play it alone. There are four opportunities for either a soloist or a soli of any combination! These occur at bars 21, 25, 49 and 53.  Have fun with these spots, giving everyone an opportunity. It will, of course, need to be mapped out for a performance. Students will shout the Bluey characters’ names just like the show’s theme. There is one spot to insert a name of your choosing - a student, teacher, administrator, family member, or pet! Alternatively, you can replace any of the character’s names to truly personalize the song. I hope you and your students enjoy learning and performing Bluey!

Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. The YouTube video features photos of both the Shenandoah River and the Missouri River. ♫ The white man loved the Indian maiden, Away you rolling river. With notions his canoe was laden. In addition, there are parts for Strings as we are preparing for a Tour which combines a Sinfonia and Junior concert band making a big sound. The keyboard parts have the chords written and notation for both approaches and I arranged a shortened version for our House Music Competition and it worked really well. The arrangement works without the 2nd or 3rd parts as the piano picks up the harmonies along with the strings.
