Considered a sea chanty, the song was passed on orally by singers on clipper ships. The variations in lyrics that have been collected demonstrate how various singers over the decades have altered the song (consciously or unconsciously). ♫ This arrangement is based on lyrics that were collected prior to 1860 and published in Sea Songs and Shanties by W. B. Whall (1910). There are evidently 2 rivers mentioned in this song, the Shenandoah and the Missouri. The song tells a love story between an impetuous trader and a Shenandoah Valley Native American princess. As the trader heads for the Missouri River, he looks back longingly to the home of the princess. ♫ I have used the Dorian Mode to suggest Native American elements in the story line. The YouTube video features photos of both the Shenandoah River and the Missouri River. ♫ The white man loved the Indian maiden, Away you rolling river. With notions his canoe was laden. Ah-ha, I'm bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. ♫ O, Shenandoah, I love your daughter, Away you rolling river. I'll take her 'cross yon rolling water. Ah-ha, I'm bound away, Cross the wide Missouri. ♫ The chief disdained the trader's dollars: Away you rolling river. My daughter never you shall follow. Published by Don Carlson Music (A0.555854). In 2016 “Shenandoah†officially became the state song of Virginia. I have enjoyed performing this with bands often in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia at concerts and at patriotic ceremonies and celebrations. It is approximately 2 ½ minutes in length. It is a medium difficulty level however with the generous use of cross cuing less experienced players could perform this. This arrangement uses the time signatures of 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 throughout and the keys of F, Eb, and G major. It includes indications when to stagger breathe. I have included generous cross cues so that it may be performed with varied instrumentation. I have included the pedal markings in the vibraphone part. It features the tubas playing the melody in counterpoint with the horns and euphoniums the first time the melody is stated. This arrangement may be performed: 1. Brass only (Play all cues) +/- Percussion 2. Woodwind only (Clarinets play Trumpet parts and all other Woodwinds play all cues) +/- Percussion 3. Several combinations of Brass, Woodwinds and Percussion Feel free to experiment with this flexible arrangement. There are many possibilities!

Published by Kreechur Kumfort Publishing (A0.833861). In May of 1885, smallpox was raging in Page County, Iowa. In fact, the town of Shenandoah had special police guarding nineteen quarantined houses that included Shenandoah’s mayor and the president of the Page County Board of Health. Also included in this quarantine was the dean of Strong’s College of Music at Dixon, W. F. Strong. Strong, a graduate of the music programs at both the Northern Indiana Normal College (now Valparaiso University) and the Cincinnati College of Music, turned his creative juices to composition and among his prolific output during this period composed the short piece Quarantine Polka. It was published later that year as a part of his Gems of Pleasure series for piano and dedicated to Mae E. Black of Toledo, Ohio. This piece has been placed in a concert band setting but retains the original carefree flavor of Strong’s 1885 composition.

Zamenis is the genus for the nonvenomous Black Snake. Zamenis Zarabanda, conceived for a group based in the Virginia Shenandoah Valley, where the Black Snake is often seen, is a five minute fanfare-like composition in triple meter. It features long and winding fast note melodies, primarily in the upper woodwind parts, alluding to slithering snakes.
