A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

Written around 1820 by Italian composer Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, this engraving of his CONCERTO FOR HORN is in the original key and has been meticulously edited. Consisting of two sections, the beautiful, plaintive opening slow section (Larghetto alla Siciliano) is about 2.5 minutes in length and works well as a stand-alone feature to showcase the sonority of the horn. It would be perfect for a talented high school player. The concluding fast section (Allegretto brillante) is bubbly, delightful, and quite technically challenging in a few spots. The concert band / wind ensemble accompaniment (available separately) is scored to prevent overpowering the soloist and will work with smaller groups for senior recitals, etc. NOTE: This download is for the 4-page SOLO PART ONLY. Jump in the Line (Shake, Señora) is a calypso song composed, by a Lord Kitchener on November 17, 1961, from the album “Jump Up Calypso” Most famously recorded by singer Harry Belafonte in 1961. Appropriate for a variety of occasions, it is striking, memorable piece for any concert bands repertoire, and can be used as a method to teach elements of the calypso music genre. It is in the key of C major, beginning with slow melodic riff introduction, played by the woodwinds, establishing a stable calypso style. The rest of the piece gains pace as the remainder of he band joins in with rhythmic and melodic ostinto in a ABA form. “Jump in the Line (Shake, Señora)” uses medium concert band skill level, perfect for learning and mastering calypso style.

This piece features 4 movements, and tells a story throughout. It starts with a slow moving part with the flute section taking the melody as well as a flute solo. It then moves to a fast and exciting movement, but eventually levels out. In the same movement, there is a low section where the melody layers on top of other lines. The 2nd movement then ends with a percussion break. The 3rd Movement has a Latin feel to it and starts with percussion, where they set up a consistent groove. Then we build to eventually the melody and trade it between altos, and the flutes, and oboe. Then the melody repeats trading between trumpets and clarinets. Throughout this, the low instruments set up a consistent rhythm while moving through the changes. Then the 3rd movement comes to an end. The last and final movement features a clarinet solo to start it off, which gives a nod to Rhapsody in Blue. It closes off with an alto solo to end it. The piece changes keys from Eb-Bb-Db-Eb.

Stephen Cai for Concert BandProgram Notes:MUSIC As a sequel to Pigstep by Lena Raine and Exodus by Ernest Gold, I have decided to take on the challenge of arranging the ever-famous glitch hop song, Monody by Christian Buettner (known more prominently by his online alias, TheFatRat).Similarly to Pigstep, my first arrangement, I ran into the challenge of instrumentation, as Monody’s original soundtrack almost entirely consisted of electronic instruments. However, I used the same technique I did with Pigstep to overcome this problem: assign basslines to low brass, treble melodies to mid-range instruments, and high parts to upper woodwinds. Unlike Pigstep, Monody pushed me to be more creative with the percussion section, as I had to puzzle out recreating all of the numerous sound effects throughout the piece with traditional percussion instruments. I even decided to notate a conch shell line for the war horn present at the beginning and the coda! At the end, however, it all came together nicely, and I came to realize that both this song and the process of arranging it represent a journey, albeit in different contexts. The word “Monody†refers to, in a literal sense, a song sung to mourn one’s death, which accordingly fits with my view of the piece as a journey where the narrator loses their companion. Writing the introduction measures (M.22) carried me through the genuine feelings of embarking on a mythical undertaking as the original soundtrack intends to portray. The lively middle section (M.70) was enjoyable to write as well, because the music itself is upbeat and full of energy. Finally, arranging the solo section was probably my most memorable experience. The slow and subtly melancholic character of the melody (the oboe solo) very closely alludes to the narrator’s mourning, and the enchanting lyrics originally written for this section further confirms their loss:    I still hear you in the breeze,    See your shadows in the trees;    Holding on, memories never change. The chords and harmonies that the original soundtrack provided were relatively simple to transcribe, and I found joy complementing them with luscious percussion effects. This is my interpretation of Monody, and I believe that it would be best performed as a journey, one which we can relate to as it encompasses the theme of loss; a monody. ARTWORK I also took up the challenge of creating original cover artwork for Monody, and I have to say, my level of appreciation for artists of any kind has skyrocketed ever since that endeavor. It took nearly two months of watching YouTube tutorials, onerous idea crunching, and using my sister’s drawing tablet, but I had nevertheless completed it with advice from some of my more experience peers (including my sister). The style of Giacommo Puccini represents the union of Italian and German opera traditions, at the same time that, under the influence of Bizet and Massenet, tooks the taste for the exotic and historical location of his operas. This is the case of the opera Tosca, wich plot was inspired in the times of Napoleon’s invasion of Italy and the confrontation between liberals and monarchists. In the third act of this opera, Cavaradossi, sentenced to death and while he is a prisoner in the Castle of Sant'Angelo, evokes the intimate moments lived with his beloved Tosca, singing the aria E lucevan le stelle, as the night dissipates and slowly the time of its execution is approaching. This transcription for symphonic band takes advantage of the wind orchestra’s sound colors and resources to achieve both the intimate character of Cavaradossi’s thoughts and the intensity and frustration he ultimately shows against his inevitable fate.

Solo E Pensoso, which translates to Alone and thoughtful was a setting of the sonnet by the same name written by Francesco Petrarch in the 1300's. Luca Marenzio depicted the poet walking alone with the slowly rising chromactic line in the beginning. Where the words flee or escape appeared in the original text he depicted them with fast moving figures. This version for modern concert band maintains all of the original material with some parts repeated for length and musical effect. It is playable by advanced high school bands and college level bands.
