We've been through many good and bad emotions. We have been recieving news, some good, some upsetting. Some days we are so happy, we want to jump everywhere and on others we want to bawl our eyes out. And that's how it is. Jolt plays through all of these emotions, the good and bad ones. It represent how sometimes, we are so happy about something, but it doesnt work out. It represents how sometimes, we hope for something that will never occur. It represents how sometimes in life, there are things that upset us. But in the end, we are stronger than those bad feelings. We are stronger than sadness, than the madness we sometimes feel dealing with those challenges. Sometimes we feel thrown around. At the end of the day, it will always get better. It will always work out. __________________________________________________ *As you may have noticed, this piece is graded with three different levels. Most instruments have two levels: beginner and advanced (grade 1 and 4), but some of the most common instruments in a concert band (flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet and percussion) have an extra intermediate level (grade 2.5). This piece has been written for bands or classes that have student of different levels, but still want to play together. But I also had a number of players who could move faster and play more challenging rhythms and notes than others. What to do? How about a simple arrangement with flexible part assignments?JINGLE THOSE BELLS! is a super-easy setting of Jingle Bells. The work opens with the traditional unison rendition of the melody, as found in almost every beginner band method book ever written. But then, after a brief pause, the melody is repeated, but now faster and with the addition of a bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by several of your best clarinet, sax, and trumpet players who play the Advanced Part. And if you are short on bass voice instruments, you can utilize the optional bass parts for Alto Sax. Super flexible and a bit humorous, it takes a little score study to realize how adaptable this piece is. Guaranteed to work with your beginners! (PS: the printed music shows Callie May, our cat, as arranger. I gave her credit so my wife could play more than one piece by me at her holiday concerts without looking too biased! On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1408466). Margaret Sutherland was one of the most innovative and influential Australian composers. In the first half of the twentieth century, her desire to be both serious composer and mother was atypical, and she faced significant challenges – public and private – in blending these roles. Against the backdrop of an unhappy and unsupportive marriage and a society not yet ready to accept her creative ambitions and strong views on Australia’s musical development, she remained admirably steadfast in pursuing her goals. Sutherland created over two hundred compositions, ceaselessly campaigned on behalf of Australian music and musicians, and led the initial push to construct what is now Arts Centre Melbourne. In her attempts to redefine beauty in music she used idiosyncratic musical language, being at the mercy of ‘sound pictures’ and ‘floating ideas’. Not much is known about this particular piece, 'Bush Ballad', save that its opening folk-like melody and sinewy variations on it are rather wonderful and very indicative of Sutherland's style - certain portions of the score seemed to be missing, and there were several handwritten corrections, so a certain amount of reconstruction and editing has been necessary to present this arrangement for full band.
