From one of the greatest writing duos to ever exist, coupled with one of the greatest RnB bands ever, Got To Get You Into My Life is a toe-tapping tune with catchy melodies and a energetic shuffle feel. For full Wind Band including many of the optional instruments that are often left out (Cor Anglais, Eb Clarinet and Soprano Saxophone), this arrangement features each section of the band on the tune, and really captures the original EWF groove. Jazz articulations and an ability to play the nuances in the tune are important here, so really dig into your bands groovy side to bring out the funk. Pay careful attention to note lengths, especially in the bass line and let your drummer drive the rhythms. Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download. The middle section features the brass section with either solos or by sections. The upper woodwinds have a chance to play a trill which leads into the finale and the dotted eighths and sixteenth notes give it a really precise feeling of a steady march tempo. If you don't have the full instrumentation, parts are doubled so you can pick what you need to fill in. Enjoy. .

It falls in the easy category and should be able to be accomplished by players as young as first, maybe second year. It goes through a few iterations of the melody and passes it around many times from each instrument to the next. You can choose to swing all or part of it in order to sound more like the original. I didn't choose to notate that to make it more accessible to younger players. Suggested combinations: Brass Quintet Woodwind Quintet (mix-match of flute, oboe, clarinet including bass, alto saxophone, tenor sax, baritone sax) Woodwind Quintet (standard - flute, oboe, horn, clarinet, bassoon) Saxophone Quintet Mix-match between brass and woodwinds Full Band - as a flexible instrumentation ensemble This piece falls into my larger chamber music initiative that seeks to create accessible, ready to play arrangements and compositions to get young musicians PLAYING MUSIC with others. Because it is so adjustable, many different combinations can be used in order to facilitate music making. A great example, a middle school band director can teach the piece as a full ensemble piece, then break the group into smaller groups (i.e. flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, bass clarinet.. or whatever works with the band director's instrumentation!).

Premiered June 6th, 2023 by the Killarney Senior Wind Ensemble and Alumni directed by Meagan Lawson, 'Killarney Carnivale' is a programmatic piece describing a small town carnival in rural Manitoba in the early 1930's, spotlighting the family of the town dentist, Dr. Martin McLaren, his wife Irene, and their six girls. 'Killarney Carnivale' describes a fictitious event, but the family is that of the composer, John Hudson. His mother, (second in a family of six girls), as a young teen in Killarney Manitoba, loved playing piano and aspired to be a concert pianist playing her favourite composers in concert halls. Her dreams took a different turn when the family had to move west for Dr. McLaren's health, but she carried with her the melodies she composed and later played to her own children.Picture John Hudson listening to hours of his mother playing piano as a young boy in the early 1950's, immersed in his mother's beautiful music. After her passing in 2010, he longed to hear these beautiful, playful melodies again. His sister Jane Keyes had become a professional piano player and happily took up the task of recreating several of their mother's pieces, which John, now a retired band director, began to transcribe. Inspired by a photograph of the family that very much looked like a carnival booth style photograph, 'Killarney Carnivale' came to life. It opens as the youngest, probably under age two at the time, wakes up. The scene swiftly changes to arrival at the much - anticipated carnival, with all of its magical sights, sounds and heavenly smells of popcorn and treats. First is the carousel, with wooden horses flying about in endless circles with children regaling with laughter.The next is a sideshow tent featuring the exotic dancer Salome, who wiled King Herod, (and probably more than a few in the audience) as her thin, tantalizing veils hinted at her charms.The next tent is dim and displays the wierd and mysterious curiosities from around the world like bearded ladies, dwarfs and the like.The cakewalk is next, with children vying to be the last person sitting as chairs are removed and the music abruptly stops each time. (This section could host a real cakewalk with a few chairs and willing audience participation. Three chairs is suggested.)Finally, the exhausted family drives home in their antique (to us) automobile with the childrens' hair flying in the breeze.One by one, the excited children fall prey to dreamland, and at long last, the exhausted parents flop into bed too.Honouring his mother's short pieces has been a life long dream of Mr. Hudson, and to hear them played by the Killarney Wind Ensemble and Alumni Band was a poignant moment: the return of these melodies to the little town where they first came to life. Many, many thanks to Meagan Lawson, their director, and all of the members of the Killarney band who so very willingly took up the challenge of playing 'Killarney Carnivale'. Their hard work and dedication to this piece is deeply, deeply appreciated.

Published by Nagamon Publications (A0.1472273). Richard Georg Strauss (11 June 1864 – 8 September 1949) was a German composer and conductor best known for his tone poems and operas. Considered a leading composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras, he has been described as a successor of Richard Wagner and Franz Liszt. Along with Gustav Mahler, he represents the late flowering of German Romanticism, in which pioneering subtleties of orchestration are combined with an advanced harmonic style.Der Rosenkavalier (The Knight of the Rose or The Rose-Bearer), Op. 59, is a comic opera in three acts by Richard Strauss to an original German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It is loosely adapted from Louvet de Couvrai's novel Les amours du chevalier de Faublas and Molière's comedy Monsieur de Pourceaugnac.In 1945 Strauss allowed an orchestral Rosenkavalier Suite to be published, but apparently was not involved in creating it. It is likely that conductor Artur Rodziński arranged it, as he conducted the suite's first performance, in October 1944 by the New York Philharmonic.The suite begins with the opera's orchestral prelude, depicting the Marschallin's and Octavian's night of passion (vividly portrayed by whooping horns and saxophones). Next comes the appearance of Octavian as the Rosenkavalier, depicted in tender music; the sight of him looking so young makes the Marschallin realise that he will soon leave her for a younger woman. There follows the duet between Octavian and Sophie – in which their love for each other becomes ever more obvious, but this is abruptly interrupted by the discordant music associated with Ochs's clumsy arrival. Next the violins tentatively introduce the first waltz, followed by another given out by the solo violin, before the whole orchestra settles into waltz mode. A general pause and a violin solo leads into the nostalgic music where the Marschallin sadly realises she has lost Octavian. Then comes its ecstatic climax. The work closes with a singularly robust waltz, depicting Ochs at his most pompous, and a boisterous coda newly composed for the suite.The PDF contains the Full Score and a full set of parts.

Andaluza, taken from Manuel de Falla’s piano suite Cuatro Piezas Españolas, is aimed at the mainstream high school band in the United States at the grade 4 level. Boisterous tuttis, intimate solos, and passionate melodies make for an engaging excursion into Spanish folk music that allows students to explore the adventurous harmonies of de Falla's impressionistic vocabulary. The variety of colors and energy in the modern concert band amplify the life, drama, and humanity de Falla poured into his piano version. Andaluza will thus prove a thrill for both performers and audience as it celebrates this life, drama, and humanity.Soprano Sax is called for on an expressive solo but is fully cued in oboe. My imagination runs wild contemplating what may be pictured in de Falla’s music. It certainly seems to be a civic gathering: perhaps a wedding, a baptism, a dedication, or a feast taking place in the civic square of perhaps on a hacienda. There are scenes that may be dancing, speeches, passionate sonnets, arguments, celebrations, all ending in a lingering mysterious question with a tinge of hopefulness. Whatever Falla may have have had in mind it is full of life, drama, and humanity.I first became aware of de Falla’s work, particularly Andaluza, in the summer of 2021 during an online orchestration seminar. Each of Cuatro Piezas’s movements expresses Spanish folk music idioms through an impressionistic lens reflecting Debussy’s influence on de Falla. Andaluza immediately struck me as music that would shine in the realm of the concert band. It was a joy to explore de Falla’s music, transforming the implications of the piano stylings into the nuances and colors available to the modern wind ensemble. It was just as much if not more challenging to develop this arrangement than creating my own original music typically proves to be. Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. Bet you never knew the sound of a train whistle was actually a Diminished 7th Chord! Well, it is, as your band will demonstrate clearly when they play the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo! Watch the eyebrows in your audience go up as they, too, realize the musical nature of that train! After four progressively louder and longer blasts from the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo, the band settles into a jaunty melody, replete with your percussion section providing that rhythmic clackety-clack that put so many cross country passengers to sleep in the heyday of train travel. An ascending scale pushes the train to the top of a hill, and a descending scale brings everyone back down to the plains. Finally, the destination is in sight. As the train slows gradually to a stop at the station, your band members vocalize Chugga Chugga Choo Choo Woo Woo in unison, and everyone can disembark. Scored for Elementary Band, be sure to prep your concert-goers with a hearty, All Aboard, when introducing this piece! .

Morning Star Serenade expresses  a variety of emotions, displayed as an assortment of variations on a theme. It could be called a tone poem with lots of motion, including an assortment of chord progession settings that make the themes into a kaleidescope of musical colors. There are also some fugal treatments of the theme, including an inverted motif. It's an advanced intermediate piece owing to the number of accidentals, dynamic changes and the counterpoint type movement in the instrument sections.
