In a soulful manner, the piece begins with the familiar song When Peace Like a River. This soulful hymn insists on finding peace, regardless of the world’s sorrows. The music then moves to a majestic trumpet processional. Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. After the climax, the processional settles and gives way to a delicate chorus of It is Well With My Soul. The hymn tune begins delicately in the flutes, yet the brass echo the stately processional. The hymn majestically builds toward its own climax, accompanied by a trumpet fanfare. This triumphant piece reminds us that it can indeed be Well With My Soul!.

Recorded on 11 September 1977 near London for Crosby's television special Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas, the song features Crosby singing 1941 standard The Little Drummer Boy while Bowie sings the counterpoint tune Peace on Earth, written by the special's musical supervisors Ian Fraser and Larry Grossman, and scriptwriter Buz Kohan, specifically for the collaboration. The hymns are scored in four parts and could be used with virtually any combination of conventional wind instruments. They are presented in a set of three books and include full four-part instrumental scores plus separate parts in a variety of useful transpositions. Parts 1 and 2 (soprano and alto) are provided in B flat, E flat and C (8ve higher than concert); Part 3 (tenor) in B flat (9th above concert), E flat, F and C (bass clef) and Part 4 (bass) in B flat, E flat and C. There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It could be used as the basis of an accompaniment and means that you can use the arrangements as solos, duets or trios. Published by Michael Pilley Music (A0.746215). The very lovely setting of A.E. Housman‘s poems by George Butterworth, reorchestrated for Chamber Wind Ensemble, was commissioned by the Maidstone Wind Symphony for their recent Concert of Remembrance entitled A Time For Peace.Composed in 1911 for baritone voice and piano, this collection of short pieces utilises poems from A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad published in 1896. The words have been woven into a delicate and moving composition, with the emotions contained in the text expertly drawn out through use of dynamics and phrasing.The delicate nature of the original pieces has been kept, with the voices of the wind orchestra giving a new timbral twist to the music. The reality of growing up in wartime is prevalent in the theme of the music and is captured well by Butterworth’s original. There has been a few orchestral settings of these songs, but this arrangement is to be the first for wind band.Premiered by Martin Hindmarsh and a selection of the Maidstone Wind Symphony players, the performance was delicate and true to the original essence of the piano accompaniment. In this arrangement, a peaceful 5th is expanded into a majestic series of descending chords until there's a pause before the song begins with quite woodwinds. The song grows and grows changing, folding, and contorting until the whole band sweeps into the final verse, where the song quiets down and ends with a soft minor plagal cadence. There is a flute solo for your best flute player, it could also be omitted if necessary. The mallet part could also be omitted in a pinch. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. To add to the warmth of the song, JVKE changes the pitch of the song to A=432 hertz tuning, instead of the conventional A=440 hertz tuning. Las Encantadas was the eloquent name bestowed upon the Galápagos Islands by the Dominican friar and Panamanian bishop, Fray Tomás de Berlanga.  He had discovered these enchanted isles quite by chance as the ship he was on, sailing by order of the Holy Roman Emperor, was blown off course hundreds of miles from its Peruvian destination, landing him among the islands of the Columbus Archipelago.  Born in fire and rich with natural beauty Las Encantadas held some mystery for sailors as these isles would seemingly appear, and disappear, from sight, apparently becoming lost in the mists and sea currents that surrounded the islands.  Las Encantadas also held some intrigue for the American author Herman Melville, who in his novella by the same name, included ten fictional short sketches about the Galápagos Islands in The Piazza Tales.Kerion Anderson tells the story of these now well-known islands in his own inimitable way with his work, Las Encantadas, by drawing musical sketches for us that depict the discovery of this archipelago with their sandy warm beaches, their rugged and forbidding coast lines with towering rocks standing as sentinels to the peaceful, blue-watered bays.  When listening to Las Encantadas one can’t help but picture a ship arriving among the isles, with sails unfurled, and sailors standing on deck gazing in wonderment at the strange animals, colorful flora and the exotic birds swirling overhead.  The uplifting spirit of Las Encantadas takes us from island to island until the music bids farewell to these enchanted isles as the ship sails away at the setting of the sun, leaving us with a sense of pathos and wonder.

On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby.
