Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in Holborn, London on August 15, 1875 and died from pneumonia at the age of 37 in Croy- don, England on September 1, 1912. At an early age his grandfather began teaching him how to play the violin. His musical ability was obvious and at the age of 15, his extended family arranged for Taylor to study at the Royal College of Music. While at RCM he changed from violin to composition, working under professor Charles Villiers Stanford. His classmates included Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. He was later helped by Edward Elgar in 1898, who described Coleridge-Taylor as far and away the cleverest fellow going amongst the young men. By 1896, Coleridge-Taylor was earning a reputation as a composer and was also accepted as an excellent conductor. In 1898 at the age of 23 he composed the African Suite. Danse Nègre is the last of the four movements that make up the African Suite, Op. 35 (proceeded by Introduction, A Negro Love Song, and Valse). Coleridge-Taylor saw it as his mission in life to help establish the dignity of the black man. He was greatly influenced by black American poet P. L. Dunbar. He made three successful visits to the United States to great acclaim. In 1904, on his first USA tour he was received by President Theodore Roosevelt at the White House. Above all, though, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was known as a man of great dignity and patience.

The title is a reference to the Mona Lisa, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, and to the song of the same name, originally performed by Nat King Cole, which was covered by Seal for the movie. Julia Roberts received a record $25 million for her performance, the highest ever earned by an actress at that time. Rachel Portman's score for the film is in a similar vein to her others for 'The Cider House Rules' and 'Chocolat', but the lovely flute theme in this suite works nicely for concert band and the combination of piano and vibraphone (originally harp) lend a pulsating texture throughout. Perfect for a quiet moment in a concert of film music and, of course, important music by a woman composer in a crowded market of male writers. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film Unchained (1955), hence the song title. Todd Duncan sang the vocals for the film soundtrack. It has since become a standard and one of the most recorded songs of the 20th century. According to the song's publishing administrator, over 1,500 recordings of Unchained Melody have been made by more than 670 artists, in multiple languages. Of the hundreds of recordings made, the Righteous Brothers' version, with a solo by Bobby Hatfield in 1965, became the jukebox standard after its release. The Righteous Brothers recording achieved a second round of great popularity when featured in the film Ghost in 1990. Also available in arrangements for string quartet, string orchestra, clarinet quartet, clarinet choir and flute quartet. My father enjoyed singing, particularly when the family went on road trips. One of our favorite songs that he sang was The Far North Land. Several years ago, my sister recorded our father singing this song for use on the soundtrack of one of her movies. I recently transcribed the song from that recording and used it as the foundation for this piece. My aunts tell me they recall my father singing this song when he was a boy growing up in Minnesota, and that they referred to it as Fletch’s song. It was only while working on this piece that I discovered that Duncan, Clear Water and Bear Skin are actual lakes in the border lakes region where Minnesota meets Canada. Many composers had adapted this tune for their works, notably Ludwig van Beethoven and Carl Maria von Weber. This arrangement tries to capture the Eastern European feel that one may characterize (or caricaturize). This arrangement started off as an assignment while taking Composing and Arranging for School Bands with Dr. Scott Watson (Alfred, Hal Leonard, Wingert-Jones) at Central Connecticut State University in the summer of 2014. Minka, Minka is arranged in band-friendly C-harmonic minor. A few items to remember: - Upper winds have a minor second trill on concert Ab to A♮ - The section starting at 53 should be played as delicate as one would allow. - The section starting at 69 should appear to gain momentum. - The section starting at 88 should be equal or stronger than it has first appeared.
