Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements. Composed in 1943, about 10 years before her death, 'The Oak' is an unpublished tone poem, perhaps more appropriately described as an 'orchestral essay', quite serious in tone and character. The foreboding opening slowly grows as more instruments enter the mix. The piece explores a number of different moods and atmospheres, from mysterious to more aggressive and irritated. Arranged for symphonic wind ensemble, 'The Oak' is a major contribution to the repertoire and deserves detailed attention - there are two different endings, the second, one that resolves quietly, is written in the score as 'the composer's preference'.

A slow march I entitled The Royal Hussar, is an original ceremonial slow march of mine, suitable for indoor or outdoor performance. Slow March: This is a ceremonial pace, used for funeral marches and when a unit’s colours are marched out in front of the troops. The feet are kept parallel to the ground and the arms are never used. In the United States Marine Corps, arms swing as the distance they normally would in quicktime, but at the same pace as marching. U.S. Marine Color Guards do not swing their arms. Slow March is typically used in the Marine Corps for funeral details and ceremonies such as the Marine Corps Ball (when the cake is escorted out). In Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines this is done during religious processions whenever a military band joins it. This march style is the official parade march in the armed forces of Bolivia and Ecuador and the military academies and schools of Venezuela, done with the goose step during parades and ceremonies. The standard pace is 60 paces per minute. Famous slow marches include:Preobrajensky Regimental Slow March Presented to the Royal Marines by Admiral of the Fleet The Earl Mountbatten of Burma on 10th June 1964 and first performed as the Regimental Slow March of the Royal Marines on Horse Guards Parade that night. The march was composed by the Russian composer Donajowsky for the Russian Tzar’s Preobrajensky Guard. The Royal Hussars Slow March ’Coburg’, a tune composed by Haydn and arranged by Grant-James in the late 19th Century, is without doubt one of the most well-known and famous Slow Marches to be written. ’The Eagle’, which itself is a combination of the 14th and 20th Hussars slow marches is also a very strong march, but not widely known outside 14th/20th King’s Hussars’ circles. The Garb of Old Gaul (sometimes given as Auld Gaul) is an 18th-century patriotic Scottish march and song about Highland soldiers during the Seven Years War. The music was written by General John Reid, who was a senior officer of the 42nd Regiment of Foot (The Black Watch) during the Seven Years War. The words have traditionally been attributed to Sir Harry Erskine (1710 -1765). Robert Burns described it as This excellent loyal Scottish song and states that it first appeared in print in Herd’s Collection of 1769. Alternative titles include The Highland Character and The Highland or 42nd Regiment’s March. The tune was originally a quick march but was later rearranged as a slow march. Other famous slow marches of the British Army include Golden Spurs & Scipio. Put away Scipio, Coburg & Garb of Old gaul, time for a newcomer on the block! Published by KyleMac Music (A0.1208594). THE MUNSTERS†was an American sitcom airing on CBS from 1964 to 1966. It depicted the home life of a family of benign monsters. The series was a satire of American suburban life, the wholesome television family fare of the era and traditional monster movies. The music, by Jack Marshall, was described by writer Jon Burlingame as a Bernard-Herrmannmeets-Duane-Eddy sound. This arrangement has fun bass lines, so they will enjoy this and need to work on it sounding creepy. Though not marked throughout, the bass line should be separated and emulate a picked electric bass articulation throughout. The rest of the winds is more suitable for 1st & 2nd-year players. Ex. The 2nd clarinets do not cross the break. The percussion is written for a drum set but can be separated as a traditional part for concert band. As usual, I have included plenty of percussion parts to go around. The tom part can be ad-libbed by a drumkit player if you go with that option. The part itself is optional but does help if splitting the drum part. There are three different mallet parts with the xylophone and marimba carrying the load. Bells can be optional. There are lots of sound effects in the accessories part. Ratchet, Cowbell, Vibra-slap, Tambourine, Whistle, Siren whistle. These can be easily substituted with what you have on hand. In 2006, Enya started work on a Christmas album of traditional carols and original tracks, but the idea was changed to a collection of songs with a Christmas or winter theme as it better suited the style of the new material. It was recorded with her long-time collaborators, arranger and producer Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan. Journey of the Angels is from this album, 'And Winter Came...' and was written in the style of what Enya described as a slow traditional carol; she chose it as a personal highlight. The song is dedicated to the American director and editor Tim Royes, who produced the music videos for Enya's songs Amarantine and It's in the Rain and died in 2007. This arrangement for concert band is part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide repertoire and features prominent parts for Cor Anglais (cued if not available) and tubular bells (chimes) to really bring out the wintery atmosphere. Jazz swing style began in the United States in the 1930s. It was America's favorite popular music form from about 1935 to 1945. This piece is a tribute to that style. Escapade in Swing begins in a moderate, laid-back feel with an ample sprinkling of cool. The piece then changes to a much faster Lively, Driving Swing tempo. A four-measure transition separates the coolness of the first part from the heat of the second part.The second part includes 2-measure written solos for clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and euphonium. Some of these solos are cued in other instruments. Directors can use discretion in assigning the solos: Solo passages can be played as written or ad-libbed, and each written solo can be assigned as a section soli.Escapade in Swing provides ample opportunities to teach lessons in jazz style, jazz notation and techniques, maintaining a steady tempo, intonation, soli and ensemble playing, and improvisation. Be sure to begin and maintain (don't rush!) the initial tempo of M.M.=108. Establishing this tempo best ensures pleasing contrast with the faster section, beginning at measure 32.This exciting piece makes an excellent concert closer, and it will be well-received by toe-tapping players and by toetapping audiences.Relight this piece's sizzle with an encore! Strike up a searing finish by taking it from measure 78 with the repeat!

Jazz swing style began in the United States in the 1930s. It was America's favorite popular music form from about 1935 to 1945. This piece is a tribute to that style. Escapade in Swing begins in a moderate, laid-back feel with an ample sprinkling of cool. The piece then changes to a much faster Lively, Driving Swing tempo. A four-measure transition separates the coolness of the first part from the heat of the second part.The second part includes 2-measure written solos for clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and euphonium. Some of these solos are cued in other instruments. Directors can use discretion in assigning the solos: Solo passages can be played as written or ad-libbed, and each written solo can be assigned as a section soli.Escapade in Swing provides ample opportunities to teach lessons in jazz style, jazz notation and techniques, maintaining a steady tempo, intonation, soli and ensemble playing, and improvisation. Be sure to begin and maintain (don't rush!) the initial tempo of M.M.=108. Establishing this tempo best ensures pleasing contrast with the faster section, beginning at measure 32.This exciting piece makes an excellent concert closer, and it will be well-received by toe-tapping players and by toetapping audiences.Relight this piece's sizzle with an encore! Strike up a searing finish by taking it from measure 78 with the repeat!

Premiered June 6th, 2023 by the Killarney Senior Wind Ensemble and Alumni directed by Meagan Lawson, 'Killarney Carnivale' is a programmatic piece describing a small town carnival in rural Manitoba in the early 1930's, spotlighting the family of the town dentist, Dr. Martin McLaren, his wife Irene, and their six girls. 'Killarney Carnivale' describes a fictitious event, but the family is that of the composer, John Hudson. His mother, (second in a family of six girls), as a young teen in Killarney Manitoba, loved playing piano and aspired to be a concert pianist playing her favourite composers in concert halls. Her dreams took a different turn when the family had to move west for Dr. McLaren's health, but she carried with her the melodies she composed and later played to her own children.Picture John Hudson listening to hours of his mother playing piano as a young boy in the early 1950's, immersed in his mother's beautiful music. After her passing in 2010, he longed to hear these beautiful, playful melodies again. His sister Jane Keyes had become a professional piano player and happily took up the task of recreating several of their mother's pieces, which John, now a retired band director, began to transcribe. Inspired by a photograph of the family that very much looked like a carnival booth style photograph, 'Killarney Carnivale' came to life. It opens as the youngest, probably under age two at the time, wakes up. The scene swiftly changes to arrival at the much - anticipated carnival, with all of its magical sights, sounds and heavenly smells of popcorn and treats. First is the carousel, with wooden horses flying about in endless circles with children regaling with laughter.The next is a sideshow tent featuring the exotic dancer Salome, who wiled King Herod, (and probably more than a few in the audience) as her thin, tantalizing veils hinted at her charms.The next tent is dim and displays the wierd and mysterious curiosities from around the world like bearded ladies, dwarfs and the like.The cakewalk is next, with children vying to be the last person sitting as chairs are removed and the music abruptly stops each time. (This section could host a real cakewalk with a few chairs and willing audience participation. Three chairs is suggested.)Finally, the exhausted family drives home in their antique (to us) automobile with the childrens' hair flying in the breeze.One by one, the excited children fall prey to dreamland, and at long last, the exhausted parents flop into bed too.Honouring his mother's short pieces has been a life long dream of Mr. Hudson, and to hear them played by the Killarney Wind Ensemble and Alumni Band was a poignant moment: the return of these melodies to the little town where they first came to life. Many, many thanks to Meagan Lawson, their director, and all of the members of the Killarney band who so very willingly took up the challenge of playing 'Killarney Carnivale'. Their hard work and dedication to this piece is deeply, deeply appreciated.
