Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

About the song:Winter’s Breath is an original Christmas song (original music and lyrics) composed in 2014. The lyrics embrace both a secular and religious message of peace, love, and hope inspired by the beauty of winter snow. I really wanted to write a more profound Christmas song with an important message embracing a modern view of Christmas since so many songs are commercialized or limited in meaning.Having lived in the Arizona desert since 2007, snow has become a novelty to me, and I was inspired by its beauty and the memories I had of winter growing up in northern Illinois. The chorus that repeats throughout the song presents an irony of winter warming the soul. I found this to be both interesting and also meaningful in that I was describing my new viewpoint of winter snow (seeing more beauty in it than before) and presenting a metaphor for life-one that encourages the listener to see the beauty in something that most northerners despise. The first verse begins with sensory perceptions including seeing, hearing, touching, and smelling various natural qualities of winter. The second verse describes the joy of children playing in the snow and their belief in winter stories. The third verse is directed at worrying adults with a message of hope for the future. The bridge encourages the listener to look past the negativity and differences in other people and look towards Christmas and the new year for a hope renewed. The final verse concludes with the traditional religious view of Christmas tradition.

This piece was originally titled Istn’t it Enough, drawing inspiration from the famous passage from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I changed the wording slightly to be more encompassing of different modes of perception (thought is a broader concept than sight and the word think created better melodic material than the word see, using the method described below) I provided an alternate title to more clearly convey the meaning behind the piece. That is; that the only church that I will ever need is the one I find in musical expression and in the beauty of the natural world. Though Adams’ meaning was meant to convey the primary reasoning for his atheism-a reason that I use as well-I also see it as an admonishment of our need for constant stimulation. Adams felt-and I feel-that people need to take the time to slow down and enjoy life: we need to enjoy the beauty of the garden (both literally and metaphorically). That, quite simply, is what this piece is (or at least what it is to me). Among the compositional techniques that I used in this piece is one that I have been using quite a lot. I call it crypto-serialism. The basic concept is that I will take a piece of text (the Douglas Adams quote, in this case) and convert each letter to a number between 0 and 11 and then convert those numbers to musical pitches, where 0 = C, 1 = C#, etc. The technique offers me a way to draw actual musical ideas from the text itself, which I see as a means of creating a deeper connection to the text. The piece is dedicated to the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocolypse: Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett.

Many of these instruments need to use techniques to utilise their full range, so make sure your instrumentalists are skilled and knowledgeable.The song has a lot of rhythmic and melodic diversity, and switches tempo and key signature frequently. The keys used are C major, F major, G major and E minor, not too difficult. Some of the rhythms can be quite hard to grasp, and instrumentalists must be able to play quick notes with accuracy. Again, make sure your instrumentalists are well learned for this. The song has a set of melodies, that are divided up by three bar percussion solos. Many of the instruments play solos or solis throughout the song, which it can be good for developing an instrumentalist's ability to stay calm on stage. The song should also improve their ability to play some complex rhythms at quite a fast speed.

The left hand plays only the bass part most of the time, with the right hand part kept as simple as possible. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. It does; however, introduce players to some of the musical aspects found in Latin American and Afro-Cuban music in an accessible way. Written for and premiered by the Sturt Public School Band (near the town of Tumbarumba) this fun work utilises narrow instrumental tessituras, and incorporates simple off off-beat entries, section solis, layered melodies, and a fun bass line that will keep your low woodwind and brass players engaged and audience tapping their feet all the way through! Your students will love this classic masterwork which has been transposed down to F major and arranged so that is more accessible to beginning and intermediate players. A solo part for intermediate to advanced players is provided with parts for C or Bb instruments, violin, and viola. Also provided are three optional keyboard parts of various levels of ability. This arrangement is perfect for concerts and educational settings. For worship, it can be performed almost any time since it exudes peace and joy, but it is particularly suited for Advent and Christmas since it comes from Cantata 147, Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben (Heart and Mouth and Deeds and Life), a cantata about Mary, the mother of Jesus, visiting her cousin Elizabeth and singing the Magnificat (see Luke 1:26-56). Published by Lorenzo Bocci.Here's to You is a song by Ennio Morricone and Joan Baez, released in 1971 as part of the soundtrack of the film Sacco & Vanzetti, directed by Giuliano Montaldo. The song is a tribute to two anarchists of Italian origin, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti who were sentenced to death by a United States court in the 1920s. The lyrics for Here's to You make use of a statement attributed to Vanzetti by Philip D. Strong, a reporter for the North American Newspaper Alliance, who visited Vanzetti in prison in May 1927, three months before his execution.  «If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. However, in this arrangement, cheekily translated as Let It Snow … But Quietly, the well-known melody in 6/8 time is presented in 4/4 time with a soul treatment. Other German Christmas tunes have also been worked into this medium-difficulty piece. Bringing folk melodies into modern repertoire has a long tradition, with many iconic works simultaneously celebrating and preserving melodies which might otherwise have been lost to history. Here we have the opportunity to celebrate and preserve a melody just as it starts to find its way in the musical world. By the time Debbie Friedman died in January 2011, just shy of her 60th birthday, she had created a large collection of music loved throughout the world’s Jewish community. She embodied the idea that each generation has a responsibility to contribute to the canon of sacred music, and her settings of liturgical texts have been sung regularly for decades. Her setting of Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, is likely her most familiar tune, but Shalom Aleichem is a beautiful capstone to her legacy. It was in an early stage at the time of her death, having shared the melody among a few groups. This melody has since been sung worldwide, beginning with Friedman’s own memorial and the following Sabbath of Song (Shabbat Shira), and it has begun to take its rightful place in the liturgical canon. The music here is ordered as it would be sung: starting with a presentation of the chorus theme by clarinets in SATB choir voicing, with more of the band joining-in with each repetition of the theme or chorus. The melody and countermelodies move among the different sections until the full band has taken up the tune while the euphonium, horn, and clarinet weave a contrapuntal line through it. Slowly, the joy of the full band is stripped away, exposing the more solemn sound of a brass choir, juxtaposing the joy brought to so many by Ms. Friedman during her life with a quiet reflection at its end.Â
