Published by Slide Ride (A0.784346). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

This lyrical piece is a delightful way to introduce your young band to ballad style. Exploring slurs, accents, dynamics, caesuras, ritardandos and more, you'll be shocked by how sophisticated this beautiful piece sounds while using only a limited number of notes. Written to convey the playful innocence of a child dreaming, In Your Slumber balances the calm of a starry sky with the imagination and adventure of a child's mind at rest. Simple and elegant, the lullaby played by the flutes in the beginning gives way to an imaginative variation on the theme by the trumpets and clarinets at B. Gentle, pulsating tenutos in the harmonizing chords underneath are symbolic of relaxed, rhythmic breathing underlying the musical thoughts flowing by above them. Just as in dreams we seldom have control of which direction the story may go, D takes us somewhere else musically and implies a build to a false climax. At E, we are greeted with the quiet sounds of the night once more, but this time our imagination runs wild as the music builds to the climax of the piece at F. This powerful proclamation of the melody is concluded with a gentle final statement in the flute and clarinet, and the piece concludes with the final twinkle of the stars as the sun rises for a new day.Full of imagination, beauty and teachable moments throughout, I hope that you and your students can enjoy and appreciate this piece for it's simple beauty as I do. Onward!~Aaron FonziREHEARSAL NOTES:1. The clarinet part should be a very light drone creating atmosphere at the beginning- the same goes for the clarinet and saxophone at rehearsal E.2. It's easy to get too loud too soon in this piece, so remind your students to have patience. F is the climax of the piece, but many young students will want to play C as if it is. Similarly, be sure to balance the trumpet/ clarinet and the flute/ oboe/ bells at C so both lines come out evenly.3. Take your time in measure 48- we want to naturally fade away and pause before going on at rehearsal E. This increase and decrease in energy is a characterization of the ebb and flow of the piece.4. At F, there are 3 important parts that must be balanced: flute/oboe/bells; trumpet/clarinet; alto saxophone/horn. For best results, balance these 3 parts, and encourage the alto/horn line to play out a bit more than they think they need to. They are the new part which must be heard here.5. Have fun and use your imagination in terms of expressing the music- ask your students what it makes them think of and create a story to go along with it. Let this ultimately guide your interpretation. I am consistently impressed with the creative ideas my students come up with, so let them decide how the music should sound with their own stories. In your slumber, anything is possible!

Several years ago, I lost my father suddenly. One of the things that helped me through the grieving proess was music. The music of Kings of the Past and He Lives in You from Disney's The Lion King resonated in me during this time and, being a musician, I started searching for an arrangement of this for symphonic wind ensemble. Much to my disappointment, I could not find such an arrangement. So, I sat down and wrote this out, developing the emotional tones I felt during the process, traveling from grief and despair to eventually hope and celebraton of who my father was and that he continues to abide in me in spirit, and developing the difficuty level I thought would be welcome in the type of ensemble I like to play in. I would recommend this score and parts to a community band or a skilled high school band, as ther are several chances to highlight the different sections of the band with multiple solos that will challenge the range on the instrumentalists.

Published by Robert Anello (A0.1027430). A couple of years ago, I was thinking about how Elvis Presley in 1956 turned the Civil War-era ballad Aura Lee into a hit love song. Over time, I identified a half-dozen ballads and folk tunes that Presley and his writers reworked into hit tunes. I mused on Elvis’ popular title as the King of Rock and Roll, and thought of another king, as Karl L. King is often called the King of the Circus March. I decided to write a march paying tribute to both Elvis Presley and Karl L. King: March: The Kings. I composed the march loosely styled on King’s famous circus marches but overlay the march with five original, public domain ballads and folk tunes later arranged into popular love songs performed by Elvis. • Plaisir d’Amour (Jean-Paul Martini, 1784) • O Sole Mio (Edorado de Capua, 1899) • Muss i denn (Friedrich Silcher, 1827) • Torna a Surriento (Ernesto DeCurtis, 1902) • Aura Lee (George Poulton, 1861) I hope you enjoy this pleasant little novelty piece. Over time, I identified a half-dozen ballads and folk tunes that Presley and his writers reworked into hit tunes. I mused on Elvis’ popular title as the King of Rock and Roll, and thought of another king, as Karl L. King is often called the King of the Circus March. I decided to write a march paying tribute to both Elvis Presley and Karl L. King: March: The Kings. I composed the march loosely styled on King’s famous circus marches but overlay the march with five original, public domain ballads and folk tunes later arranged into popular love songs performed by Elvis. • Plaisir d’Amour (Jean-Paul Martini, 1784) • O Sole Mio (Edorado de Capua, 1899) • Muss i denn (Friedrich Silcher, 1827) • Torna a Surriento (Ernesto DeCurtis, 1902) • Aura Lee (George Poulton, 1861) I hope you enjoy this pleasant little novelty piece. My first complete concert band piece. It's been in the works for about 3 months. The early drafts of this piece were written in April/May and were then left to collect dust for months. I wrote it to experiment with melodic/harmonic minor scales and did not intend to finish the piece. Around the same time I wrote the early drafts of the piece, my high school band director asked if I wanted to write a piece for the concert band. I agreed and spent months working on different pieces of music, completing none of them. Around late October I stumbled across this looking through old pieces of music for some new ideas. I listened through it 3 or 4 times and decided to continue the piece. After spending roughly two months finishing the draft, and another month revising and adding parts, I had finally finished Trapped. When I started working on this piece with the intention of finishing it, I was at a difficult point in my life. I had recently come home from my rookie season of drum corps and was still transitioning back to the real world. The freedom of tour had been taken away from me, I had mentally matured a lot during the summer. While only 17 I felt like I was stuck with a bunch of kids. I had spent all summer with friends much older than me, learning a lot from them and taking inspiration from them in many ways. When I started this piece, I was conflicted with many thoughts and emotions. I was still under the impression that my peers in the music program hated me because of some of my actions last year. The girl from home I had been talking with all summer while I was gone, and hoped to start a relationship with, lied to me while I was gone about many things, causing me to remove them from my life. The last year and a half have involved many events like losing my best friend of 5 years because of, what I consider, an overreaction on my part; being used for my kindness; lied to; having secrets about me revealed behind my back by those I trusted; being a therapy friend; constant overthinking; as well as toxic friendships I didn’t want to leave because I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I felt trapped. I had spent so long trying to improve myself to become who I am today, and I still felt like crap. Even though I knew and promised myself I wouldn’t follow through, I was battling suicidal thoughts and I was in a severely depressive episode of my life. I wrote this piece to express the feeling of overthinking, being trapped in your mind, and the road to recovery. The constant back-and-forth battles with yourself, unsure of where to go and what to do next; feeling trapped. I hope that this piece connects and resonates with those of you in a similar position to what I was in, and I promise there is a way out and that life does get better. And with that, I present to you, Trapped.

The third movement from the four movement 'Suite in Sea' written for clarinet and piano by Kara Williams, 'Brew Time March' has been orchestrated for wind ensemble by the composer and has since proven to be a favourite with performers and audiences. We follow a young sailor as they excitedly hear the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee (brew) and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, the young sailor unexpectedly hears the sound of work recommencing, and scurries back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time!  Opening with the 'Stand Easy' (break time) bugle call, Brew Time March is full of familiarly-sea-worthy sounds, and is a fun concert march that would be a great addition to any ensemble's library. In the style of a traditional military march, unless otherwise specified, notes should be played slightly detached throughout. Ensure the bass solo has plenty of attitude, and the rhythmic accompanying parts let the melodies breathe. Use a small set of crash cymbals (if parade-style cymbals are not available) - your percussionist will thank you! Also, hit the cymbals together slightly off-centre for zing and dynamic control, and hold the edges of the cymbals against the body to choke the ring where indicated. Keep this march a very steady two-feel throughout; however, feel free to completely stress the upper woodwinds out by going as fast as musically possible where marked at the end :-) Brew Time March runs for around 2:45 and is scored for full wind ensemble; however, it will work without one, some, or all the following parts: piccolo, 4th clarinet, baritone sax, bass clarinet, bassoon, horns in F, and bass trombone.

La Tomatina was composed in 1996 in Buñol, Spain while I was researching Spanish band music. Buñol is a small town of about 9,000 inhabitants about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from Spain’s 3rd largest city, Valencia. For 364 days of the year, it is a typical small town, but on the last Wednesday of August it becomes an international attraction. On that day the La Tomatina festival is held. Several trucks drop as many as 145,000 kilograms of tomatoes unto the main street and for an hour at 12:00 noon there are up to 100,000 people taking part in throwing tomatoes at each other. At 1:00 everybody goes to the specialpublic showers to wash up. A fire truck comes down the street washing down the buildings and the main street and by about 2:00 all is returned to normal and all references to the tomato fight are gone. Thetradition has been going on since 1945. I was in the streets taking part in throwing tomatoes for three years. After that when I was in Spain during the festival I watched it on TV.Buñol also has a rich tradition of having two very good concert bands – the Litros and the Feos. Most of the 9,000 inhabitants formally belong to one of the two social clubs. There are several band competitionsheld in Spain and both of these bands take part. The band competition is fierce as bragging rights are won by the winning society. It is thought that this fierce competition is what helps develop excellentmusicians in that many young people become professional musicians and play in many orchestras and bands throughout the country.La Tomatina was premiered by the U. S. Army Band Pershing’s Own on the U. S. Capital steps in June 1996, the composer conducting. La Tomatina is the second movement of SinfonÃa de Valencia, a three- movement composition that was premiered in Buñol by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Francisco Tamarit in August 1997. SinfonÃa de Valencia is recorded by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Fernando Bonete Piqueras on Mark Records (CD3816). Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Creature began as a joke in high school between a friend of mine and me where we described the radical mood swings of our band directors as a creature coming forth from inside of them. Think about the alien from Alien 3 where it opened its mouth and its tongue was a little alien head with teeth of its own. I thought it would be fun to write a piece of music around this creature, so I wrote a short series of story beats and then some music around it. The full story is, unfortunately, lost to history, but the music survived the twenty-five years since its original composition, and in honor of my young self, I merely edited any typos and left it just as I wrote it when I was a seventeen-year-old high school senior. This was my first, solo-written, full band composition, and one can hear that I was a huge fan of Igor Stravinsky. This is not an easy piece to play. It has time changes aplenty, fast runs in the upper woodwinds, very exposed parts in nearly every section, large interval leaps, and spares hardly anyone's range. The eighth note remains constant across the 4 and 8 time signatures, and the breakdown of the complex time signatures is apparent in how the eighth notes are barred. As a conductor, it will be challenging as well, but I survived it on two occasions as both a senior in high school and in front of a military band, so it can be done. So enjoy the musical story of a creature who attacks people in its rage and hunger before it is chased and defeated by an angry mob ... but did it really die? In 1882, Sir Edward Elgar jotted down in his musical notebook a piano piece he titled Douce Pensée (Sweet Thought). There it remained until 1913 when he got it out again, revised it slightly, re-titled it Rosemary - That's for remembrance, and published it for the first time. The title comes from Ophelia's Garland Speech in Shakespeare's Hamlet, where she says, There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember. In 1915, the First World War had been raging in Europe for a year, and many British composers and poets had turned to artistic means to mourn those who died in the trenches of across the Channel. Elgar orchestrated the work at that time. In 1925, London publisher W. Paxton published arrangements by C. Jenkins made for brass and reed band and for military band; however, these are now out of print and no longer available. In the fall of 2015, Mitch Sturman, director of the Wilson Junior High School Warrior Band in El Centro, California, asked me to make an arrangement of Rosemary for the Eighth Annual Concert of Premieres, a series Sturman had begun in 2008, commissioning new works by known composers, and commissioning new arrangements of pieces he felt were worthy works in the public domain that were no longer in print and/or were written for ensembles containing instruments no longer part of the standard modern band or orchestra. Includes score and parts: Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax 1, Alto Sax 2, Bb Trumpet, Trombone (or Baritone), Mallets, Bass Drum, and Cymbals. When I arranged this, I only had early elementary clarinet players so that part is entirely written below the break. It can be taken up an octave for more advanced players. There is a flute solo for your best flute player, it could also be omitted if necessary. The mallet part could also be omitted in a pinch. It Is Well With My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss. First published in Gospel Songs No. 2 by Ira Sankey and Bliss (1876), it is possibly the most influential and enduring in the Bliss repertoire and is often taken as a choral model, appearing in hymnals of a wide variety of Christian fellowships. Horatio Spafford's original lyrics are included below. Published by Yellow Envelope Publications (A0.1272805). Threshold is meant to portray time slowing down as you approach a black hole due to Gravitational Time Dilation. As such, I took a melody and reworked it in several different time signatures, to allow you to feel it stretch out or shrink, leading to moments where time basically goes out the window with prolonged moments of aleatoric metallic cacophony in the percussion section. Mixed in with the increasing and decreasing time signatures is something loosely resembling a fugue subject in the woodwinds. I’m not sure where it came from, but I love the feeling it gave this piece.By the way, I always thought it would be really cool if, during the end of the piece, the percussion could be spread throughout the performance venue to create a true surround sound experience, playing the aleatoric motive all around the audience. I started writing Shindig Shenanigans in the summer of 2019 and I had a specific mood or feeling of celebration in my mind when doing so however due to other commissions and work I never finished it, coming back to it intermittently over the next couple of years. Between March and June 2021, I made some final edits and finished the piece off. The piece is a celebration as implied in the title, ‘Shindig’ is a party and ‘Shenanigans’ are silly or high-spirited behavior and or mischief that people have at that party. I thought it was appropriate now as we finally start to move out of restrictions that we have seen and experience over the last year and a half. Shindig Shenanigans is a great concert opener or encore piece to your concert and gives the players plenty to work with both technical and melodically. .
